Effective February 1, 2023, Platinum Card Members, Business Platinum Card Members and Additional Platinum Card Members on the account will be charged a $50 fee for each guest (or $30 for children aged 2 through 17, with proof of age). We usually don’t have more than one alcoholic drink in the lounge.

Now, if the lounge was a quiet sanctuary and we wanted to get a hot shower upon arrival from overseas, things might shift towards CL.
I was in the SEA CL a few weeks ago on a Sunday afternoon, and while not as many food options as I've seen in others, the menu was actually very veg. friendly. I forget everything, but there was a single meat main, and I think of the two soups, one may or may not have been veg, I didn't ask about the base. But there was a salad bar, pasta, and a couple of other things. Now vegan is a different story, but there were definitely veg. options there.

IME, I think you can basically cross off SFO at anytime of day after ~7:30am, honestly. At least until the expansion opens.

I'm SFO-based, and even while guests are still comp, the CL isn't really in my prime reason for considering the card - its nice when I/we can use it, but I basically don't assume I'll get in anymore. Really, I'm through YYZ (and YVR) enough that I wanted to the continued access to those [Plaza Premium] lounges, which Priority Pass dropped access to, so Amex is essentially the only way in anymore without doing pay-per-use. Plus departing here, I will use SJC if possible, though admittedly as a primarily UA flyer, its tough to do to much out of there except on trips I don't mind adding a stop.

AA, AS, and DL are almost never crowded. United Clubs are a zoo at peak hours in morning and late afternoon, but okay at others.

I usually don't even bother with Centurion SFO anymore. So not worth it.

Yeah the salad “bar” is pretty much what we snacked on in the past. There is definitely something to eat for us, and I may have been too negative (to be clear, I choose to be veg, and I don’t expect them to have just veg items). But we were comparing CL food choices to spending money at airport restaurants, and there happens to be a veg restaurant just around the corner - Floret by Cafe Flora. And it even was part of the PP Free Dine program for a while (which is the only reason why I found it give that I have never flown out of those A gate areas). So… if the choice is guesting my wife into the SEA CL or having a meal at Floret and spend $50-$70, we would probably head to the restaurant.

I've seen DL SFO busy, but not overcrowded, pre-pandemic (was a ghost town on my last visit)

I used to go the AA lounge in SFO, and it was never crowded, but I am not sure if they moved their lounge, I think it used to be in the same terminal as Virgin/Alaska/JetBlue

Had the same experience late Saturday morning. We just walked on by and had a decent breakfast and bubbles at Mustards instead, courtesy of (non-Amex) PP.

Call me crazy, but if AMEX kept the PP restaurants, they could have potentially diverted traffic away from the Centurion lounges. No?

I love my home PP experience. Rarely ever a wait to get in, doesn't matter which airline I fly, can bring 2 guests, entrée such as a breakfast or a burger and a Manhattan included. The other half never uses the full credit, so I could get more drinks. 1 is usually plenty though.

I thought the PP restaurant benefit was fantastic and used it countless times across multiple PP memberships simultaneously at LAX's PF Chang's, which leads me to believe this was one of those benefits where it turned into something that was simply too cost prohibitive. I'd have nixed it too. But, as a consumer, I really miss it!

Those were good times--after dinner, drop by the KE lounge for some Remy Martin XO.

I wish priority pass had more venues like the Minute Suites at ATL and the PGA lounge at MSP. I've had connections after a redeye in ATL get delayed and it is nice accessing the minute suites to get a nap in and then head to the skyclub for a shower and something to eat before heading to my gate.

One of my friends loves having a long layover at MSP since he can access the PGA lounge and use the credit on the golf simulator. If I connect with him on an international flight I'll go in with him and use the credit for a sandwich and drink and credit covers most of it. Another friend I travel with sometimes will go in with me and just grab a diet coke and the credit will cover a sandwich and decent cocktail for me. I wish there were spa's and more restaurants in the US. I miss using the credit at Barney's at LAX, I loved going there for a sandwich when I would have a flight land at lunch time and then head to my hotel.

I wish PP had places like workout facilities or even just a place with a shower and light boxed meals

Question How many free guests if two Plat cards?

I have both a business and a personal Platinum. I know this will change next year, but for 2022 could I bring in two free guests per card, for a total of four guests? Or is it limited to two guests per Plat cardholder?

Thanks for any advice.

This is the policy. See here:https://thecenturionlounge.com/info/access/

Guest access is per Card Member, not per Card. Family or guests may not enter or remain in the lounge unless accompanied in the lounge by the Card Member. No more than two guests per day will receive admittance to the lounge at no additional charge

I don't doubt the cost-cutting factor. I'd like to say I'm generally somewhat more understanding on cost-cutting measures than the average person. I do wonder how much it truly "costs" them to allow a customer into a lounge vs a restaurant. It can't be a $0 vs $50 difference. They could have limited guests there too. If AMEX truly want to reduce Centurion crowding, eliminating other, solid options leads me to believe that they aren't as serious about the customer experience. It's just more about the profit. For a card touting such a premium experience, if you are a traveling with 1 or more people, and not on specific airlines, it's not always going to leave the most desired outcome.

It makes me curious to see what happens if Chase and/or Capitol One are able to build a significant presence with their own lounges, combined with their full priority pass access. They've been somehow able to figure out how to not cut these costs. Why can't American Express? While many currently cheer at the thought of being able to save a nickel on Hulu, I still wonder what the future of "premium travel cards" looks like.
Boraxo and m907 like this.

Cap 1 has opened one lounge. Chase has yet to open any, and they're going to be Chase-branded/modified "The Club" lounges anyway. I think it's premature to say that they've figured out how to make all those co-exist, if and until they do build a significant presence, though I'm curious to see too. Amex also has the Plaza Premium and Delta SkyClub access, which other issuers probably can't easily replicate.

I really don't get the purpose of the Chase clubs. I was hoping as a CSR holder that it would mean it would be like the AmEx CL lounges and only open to people with Chase premium cards but it's part of Priority Pass. Chase Sapphire already comes with priority pass and I'm sure a lot more AmEx card holders have PP than chase card holders. Only thing that I can think of is (and honestly hoping for) is that like Plaza and Escapes partnership with with PP got cut and only AmEx cardholders can access it, the Club will cut their ties with PP and only give Chase Cardholders access. Don't see that happening though since Chase doesn't have nearly the membershp that AmEx does and they don't have an overseas presence.

With all PP holders having access to the Chase lounge, I can see those clubs be saturated with people.

I am surprised that Chase Sapphire members don't get access to United Clubs since Chase is tight in bed with United like AmEx is with delta and the CSR is their premium card. Same with Citi, I'm surprised their high end credit card doesn't give American lounge access since Citi is tight in bed with American.
