Centurion Lounge crowding: Platinum cardholders may pay $50/guest effective 2.1.2023

No more free guests for personal and business platinum card members starting February 1, 2023 unless you spend $75k or more each calendar year on that card.

I personally thought this was the easiest way to eliminate overcrowding because it mirrors the Delta SkyClub access policy. I have no issues with this because my spouse and both of my parents are already and authorized members on my platinum account.

Effective February 1, 2023, Platinum Card Members, Business Platinum Card Members and Additional Platinum Card Members on the account will be charged a $50 fee for each guest.

To receive Complimentary Guest Access at these locations after January 31, 2023, the total eligible purchases on the Platinum Account must equal or exceed $75,000 between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022 and in each calendar year thereafter.

Thought they've phased this in via a certain number of free guest passes.

Either way, I welcome it; the lounges were too busy pre pandemic and will almost certainly be a cluster during the summer.

In defense of Amex, they're giving a lot of runway for this change, the guts of 2 years.

I have created a Wikipost, copying most of the text of this page. In addition to Centurion Lounge access the page discusses: Delta Skyclub, Airspace, Priority Pass and Escape Lounges. It refers to Escape Lounges as The Centurion® Studio Partner. I have not noticed this cobranding previously, The Escape Lounge paragraph also includes an apparent editing error referencing Delta Airlines. I expect this will be corrected.

I read this to mean that there is no possibility that a supplementary Platinum cardholder can avoid the $50/guest fee, because all spending on supplementary cards will be credited against the primary cardholder's objective.

2 guests per cardholder was always pretty generous, I can understand why overcrowding became a sensitive topic. Would be interesting to see the math behind the $75k figure, I’ll never hit it personally but probably some really surprising valuations at what a guest visit costs them.

This does makes AU a lot more attractive at roughly $60 per person, hope that doesn’t jump up too (seems likely though with rumors of the AF increasing as well). Wouldn’t put it past Amex to make it $100x3 for AU

I don't read that, I just think that's to make the $75k not seem such a big deal if there are 4 cards spending toward it.

If you're right it certainly does change the value proposition, and I think Amex would be foolish to leave on the table the incremental AU fee income that this change will almost certainly generate.

Your interpretation is that $75,000 annual spend will waive the guest fee for all of the Platinum cards on the account, primary and supplementary?

In “fairness” to those who’d only need one AU plat card, let’s make it a per-card fee

Interesting that they announce this so far in advance. It’s not like I can make a decision now on whether this works for me considering the other unknowns. But at least folks who sign up for a Plat card now get about 1 1/2 years of the current benefit, so no bait and switch.

It also means that American Express has time to adjust the details. They preannounced the $200 Airline Fee Reimbursement benefit, and when it went live the terms were different.

Thank you - for some reason I thought there was an exception for spouses, minor children, etc.

Hmm seems like I've taken you up incorrectly, I thought you were pointing toward an AU not having their own access under the new terms.

I can live with this if it helps crowding. I don't plan to put 75k/yr on my card. For times I'm traveling with family I can pay for additional access.
