Excellent Offer

Definitely one of the more generous sign-up promo's around right now.

If you're hesitant about the annual fee, I've found the AMEX Plat card to bring worthwhile value (worth the $450 fee) if you travel, but perhaps not enough to reach mid- or higher tier elite status... not just air, but also factor in car rentals, cruises, etc.

This is one of the better offers out there. 100K MR points are fairly liquid, and can be very flexibly converted into just about anything. Once you factor the $200 of airline credit, the annual fee is very much worth it if you travel.

Was this offer for a business or personal Plat card?

Have had AA Awards card for years but have gotten very frustrated with them of late: Can't accrue miles towards million miles with CC, their planes are falling apart etc etc.

Bottom line: 450/year is steep. I travel 4-6 times a year. How flexible are their points for use?

thx!
WITH THE $450 ANNUAL FEE, you get about $500 worth of points. thee fee made your offer not excellent. but it is still an ok good offer!

It's good offer. With my upcoming travel plans, I would pay the $450 and jump at the 100,000 points for that min spend!

It's 1k worth of gift cards, if you don't plan to be using the points to fly.

docderwood's question has been merged into the established thread about this offer. Reviewing the preceding posts will allow you to understand how to recover most of the annual fee.

Membership Rewards are worth $0.01 each when redeem for merchant giftcards, but this is far from the best use. See this thread:

minus $450 annual fee from 1k$ worth of gift cards and you get $550 of giftcards not $1k. I know getting giftcards for amex point is not the best use

Not sure what that changes. Even at this relatively poor redemption rate, he's being offered $550 for free. Why is that just an "ok" deal?

That doesn't factor in the $200 credit (which he can claim twice, once in 2012 and again in 2013) or the $100 Global Entry reimbursement, which come very close to wiping out the annual fee altogether.

Essentially, this is like being offered free money, except it is even better. Not taking advantage of this would be simply disturbing.
