Preventing AAdvantage Miles and Accounts from Expiring:
What can I do? Alternatives for miles use and discussion.

To check your miles expiration date: Look for the Wallet link on the website or in the app.

From AAdvantage Terms and Conditions: "AAdvantage members must have mileage earning or redeeming activity once every 18 months in order to retain their miles. If your account has no qualifying activity in any 18-month period, all miles in the account will expire. Qualifying activity extends the expiration date of all unexpired mileage credit in your account for 18 months from the date of the qualifying activity. Qualifying activity is defined as redeeming any AAdvantage award or accruing mileage credit on any eligible American, American Eagle® or AAdvantage airline participant as well as accruing mileage credit with participating hotels, car rental companies, credit cards, telecommunication providers and other service providers offering AAdvantage mileage credit." Gufting or donating miles, doing anything that will cause an increase or decrease in the number of award miles in an AAdvantage account resets the expiration clock by 18 months.
AAdvantage members who are under 21 are not subject to mileage expiration if their birthday is associated with their account.

But note:
Pausing AAdvantage® mile expiration through June 2021

You’ve worked hard to earn your AAdvantage® miles, and we recognize you may need more time than usual to keep them active. We’ve paused the expiration of miles through June 30, 2021. If your miles are scheduled to expire on or before June 30, 2021, they will now expire in July 2021, if there’s no additional activity in your account before then. You can find the expiration date of your miles in the Wallet section of your AAdvantage® account.
ANY account activity, earning or using miles, will extend the expiration date of all AA miles by an additional 18 months.

When days count, be aware: it's the transaction date, not the posting date, that counts to extend miles' validity. It can take some time for miles activity to fully post, including the new expiration date. But, read on. Be aware of some vendors’ delayed posting, however.

In other words, each online vendor may define and report the activity date to the airline in ways you didn't expect. I have seen an instance, for example, where the reported activity date was almost 2 weeks past the actual date I placed the order, simply because a part was on back-order, thus the full order was not "completed" and therefore the credit card not billed until later. Another example is flower delivery, especially if the flowers aren't scheduled for delivery until much later. Buyer beware -- the airline will refer you to the vendor for clarification.

Here are some suggestions from members on how to prevent miles from expiring easily and/or automatically. Please post your suggestions here.
  • Sign up and register a credit card with AAdvantage Dining, go dine at an enrolled restaurant. (Sign up with your email address for notifications for 3 miles per dollar spent instead of one mile; dine 11 times in one year and earn 5 miles per dollar.)
  • Make any purchase through https://www.aadvantageeshopping.comthat earns AA miles.
  • Another easy/cheap route is ordering photos from Walgreens.com. It specifically says in the terms "photo orders picked up in-store are eligible." Prints are as cheap as US$0.29, but I'd purchase at least $1 worth to make sure you get your miles (2miles/$1).

One simple way to reset the expiration date would be for your wife to register a credit card (any card) with AA's dining program and then use the card to pay for a meal at a participating restaurant. She will earn 1 mile for each $ spent (or 3 miles per $ if she fills out a brief profile). There is also a current offer of bonus miles for new members if certain conditions are met. For further details go to AA's website, find the section on earning miles with partners, and then click on Dining. Be sure to dine on a day when meals at your chosen restaurant are eligible for miles. Some participating restaurants offer miles daily, but others restrict the offer to certain days of the week.

Sign up to Awardwallet and register your AA account. Leave a comment on their blog and you will be credited with 5 miles.

Credit to the original poster of this on this forum - can't find the link, sorry.

Datapoint: Miles were set to expire on January 9th so I was scrambling to get the activity done tonight. I used 500 miles for magazines, but it wasn't showing real time so I donated 1,000 miles to Kids In Need and it deducted the miles immediately and pushed the expiration out.

I searched up the thread and found surveys that were dated back in 07.

Are there any recent up to date surveys to help extend miles? I have miles expiring February.

Don't shoot me. Quick question. Read the WIKI but I am in between traveling. My niece freaks out because the miles in her account expire in March. So I went to the AA Mall and purchased something.Today she got a message that "you earned your first miles through the .... ). WIKI says purchases will extend the expiration date. She says that miles have been credited but the expiration day has not changed. Is that normal, does it require time until change? Does she worry needlessly?

I posted a comment late last week and received my 5 AA miles today, which extended expiration.
Man.. this is so cool.. My wife has about 16k miles expiring which I was planning to use in May.. this helps me buy the time.. her miles were expiring in Feb..

I posted the comment on the blog.. hopefully the point posts soon and the expiry is pushed out.. will update this post once done..

Update: 4 days after the comment on the blog was posted, the miles reflected in her account and the expiry dates have been pushed back by another 18 months. 16k miles saved through less than 5 minutes of work.. awesome..

Update : She worried needlessly. Miles had been credited, but the expiration date was only changed a couple of days later.

It can take a while for AA systems to catch up, but the transaction date (not the posting date) is what counts.

I just got a notice in the mail today about my miles expiring.

Last activity was January 2016 when I redeemed an award (which was actually in November).

Notice said I have until April 2017 to redeem for magazines but the wording make it sound like my miles would expires otherwise.

I checked my account and the expiration date for my miles is 7/29/17, so 3 months later than the notice.

Can I wait until the last few days to try to get activity on it?

I have 23,915 so 1085 short of an domestic Y saver award. I would probably buy some miles to try to get to 25k but they sell in increments of 1k miles ($29 currently).

I guess I could wait until mid July to buy some miles or find some other way to reset the clock?

U r 1085 short of a domestic y saaver, and are close to expiration on your miles. Instead of spending the $29 to buy 1000 miles, wouldn't it make sense to spend the $29 in aadvantage eshopping and get something back in return? If you look around you can find some vendors offering 2x. 3x. or higher. Just read up on the thread, there is numerous details.

Odd, my 3/8/2017 AAdvantage email says earn 1000 miles:

"Everything's coming up miles
Get ready for spring with up to 1,000 bonus miles when you shop through AAdvantage eShoppingSM and watch your mileage account bloom"

When I click the link, "we're sorry this promotion is no longer available."

Guess I'll wait a couple of months to see if it comes up again.
