Welcome to the 2019 "NEWBIE LOUNGE"
Ask Your Consolidated / Combined AA Questions Here (flame free)
MODERATOR GUIDEPOST:
(This post can only be edited by moderators.)

Welcome to the Newbie Lounge!
Welcome to Flyertalk!

The Newbie Lounge is a place for newer and less experienced members to ask their questions about American Airlines and the AAdvantage program and have answered by our more experienced and knowledgeable members. Feel free to ask any question related to American Airlines and AAdvantage here.

NOTE: This is a "flame free" thread; flaming, personal criticism for "failing to search" etc. is not allowed (if posted, the post will be summarily deleted, the poster subject to sanctions).

Advanced questions posed by veteran FT users may be moved and / or merged into existing master or GUIDE threads, most of which have Wikiposts at the top of the page that contain summaries of important information.

We volunteer Moderators monitor this "lounge" thread to assist you as well. When browsing the fora, look at the page tops of the various forums. There will be a menu, and often "sticky" threads, and threads with header "wiki posts" (created and maintained by the FlyerTalk community) with important information relating to that forum / topic.

Don't hesitate to contact a moderator or another member if you have any additional questions. You can PM the Moderators by clicking on , which pops up a message box; the message goes to all this forum's Moderators. Note that unlike some sites with paid staff moderators, FlyerTalk Moderators are volunteers, and most work, travel, go on holiday, etc. You can Private Message us using the PM system (My Flyertalk) and our handles.

We're glad you've chosen to join the Flyertalk frequent flyer community!

Q. How can I find information more easily than reading through all the threads? Now that I'm here, what do I do next?

Check out the following resources:

Searching can be key to finding important information and answers without waiting for someone to drop by and answer, and it helps prevent that information fragmentation. FlyerTalk Advanced Search can seem quirky to the infrequent user, but it's fairly powerful if one knows how to use it. There are several ways to search:

Forum basics: Now that the new AA has become by some measures "the world's largest airline", this new, combined has become a "mega-forum", very large, very active - and theoretically very difficult to find information and easy to lose one's place. Having to search for and sort through dozens - or more - of threads on baggage, airports, minimum connect times or the like could soon become unproductive and discouraging.

To prevent this from occurring, please note we try to:

Keep a few "sticky" threads: such as GUIDE posts, OSO / IROPS, etc. for urgent and quick reference, such as basic "where do I find" reasons

Keep threads to specific topics: Prevent information fragmentation and loss by consolidating questions, answers and discussion of one topic contained in one thread. (This also honors those members who have already shared valuable information and experiences.)

"Popular" threads are likely to have a Wikipost at the head that will summarize important information and have resource links. These are "community property", and as any wiki are established, maintained and updated by the members (with 90 days of tenure and 90 posts on FlyerTalk).

You may find your question or post merged into one of those threads. Be sure that we will leave a link behind from your original thread, and to look up to see if there's a wiki with information. We apologize for any possible inconvenience or difference between this forum and others, but we think you'll like some of the resources and tools here to enable more convenient, comfortable travel on AA and greater knowledge sharing.

Keep it welcoming: We're proud the members of both FFPs have kept the brickbats to a minimum; we want this forum to be welcoming, civil and information rich, so name calling (including calling a member one disagrees with "AApologist") and snark are not tolerated. Posts with such are likely to be summarily deleted in their entirety; repeated such behavior may result in suspension of one's membership privileges or being banned from this forum. Let's keep it friendly and in accordance with the FT Rules.

FlyerTalk Rules (We all agree to abide by these, and are held accountable.)

Award Hold kicks back after canceling?

Hello fellow AAer, if I have an award on hold and I cancel will that award kick back into available inventory for another person to book (either also via AA or via BA)? Thanks!

It might or it might not, there's certainly no guarantee.

Where you will be going could make a big difference. PHL is only part of the travel.
I did ask that. Apparently they have no preferred relationships with any one airline, car rental, or hotel. I can either book with their corporate card, or I can choose to use my own personal card and get reimbursed. Only one person I spoke with so far uses his own card. I will be mostly travelling to the eastern part of the country (both north and south) so AA makes the most sense. I'm off to research the fare types now.

Thanks again for the help. Im sure I'll be posting here again soon.

I wish I could get reimbursed by my employer and use my own card, I have the Chase Sapphire Reserve which gets triple points on travel. I wouldn't discount using your own card unless your coworkers have had bad times getting reimbursed.

Yes, the one person who uses his own card said that we are very lucky and his old company dictated the airline and hotel and he was required to use a corporate card. They're flying me out for the final interview in 2 weeks, so once the offer is extended I will be sure to get a copy of the travel policy and plan accordingly.

I only have CSR and the Freedom Unlimited card now. So I will need to consider which other cards to get once everything is official. Thanks for your help.

LHR Connection

In a couple of days, my family of 4 will be connecting through LHR for the 1st time (well, I did once myself years ago). We have frankenstein award ticket itineraries consisting of AA PHL-LHR (Business class) and then a separate BA booking LHR-CDG (Economy). We will have no checked luggage, and just over 3 hrs between flights. If I understand correctly, we'll arrive T3 and depart T5. I also believe there is an AA lounge landside at T3. Assuming I'm correct so far, I'm wondering if we have time to grab a shower in that lounge and then get to T5, or does it take too long to exit to that lounge and re-enter through security at T5? Is it better to just stay secure-side and transition to T5 (or is that even an option? Maybe we have to exit and re-enter?). Is there any other lounges I should consider (we do have Priority Pass access)?

What would you pros do if in my situation?

Your PHL-LHR flight in business will grant you access to any of the BA business lounges at T5, which have showers. Just make sure to hang on to your boarding pass to show for entry since these are separate tickets. When you land at T3, just follow signs for flight connections, take the bus to T5, clear security, and then head to one of the lounges.

That sounds great. I thought those were “departure” lounges, so we wouldn’t have access since our departure is in economy. Glad to be wrong. Thanks.

They are departure lounges. If you were just flying LHR-CDG in economy (with no status) then you wouldn't have access. But since you're connecting from an eligible oneworld long haul flight in business, you get lounge access before your short connecting flight, even if it's in economy.

Three hours is what many of us consider reasonable connection time T3-T5. Use the Flight Connections channel on arrival and get to T-5, use one of the Galleries Business lounges there. You might have time for a shower, you may well not. See https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/amer...-ba-ib-t5.html, particularly the Wikipost at the top of the page.

Upgrade to Premium Economy on American Airlines

I am booked to go from DFW to Kona Hawaii in August and can upgrade to Main Cabin Extra but there is not an option for Premium Economy. When I do a simulated booking, Premium Economy is available so I am confused why I don't see that option. It would be a paid upgrade as I have no points with American. If I upgrade to MCE, will Premium Economy appear or is there another way?

Thanks in advance!

MCE isn’t really an upgrade. It’s a seat selection for a fee.

you can call AA and upfare to PE if that’s what you wanted. It will be the difference between your current fare and the new published fare in effect for today.

No change fees and you will earn higher elite credits for doing the upfare.

The MCE 'upgrade' you're seeing really isn't an upgrade, you're just given the option of paying for a better seat assignment in the same ticketed cabin (economy).

Premium Economy is an entirely different cabin, you cannot upgrade into it, but you can upfare to PE by paying the fare difference between economy and PE. This can't be done online so you'll need to call AA.

Called the airline and they said the Premium Economy Seats were only available to purchase with miles or upgrades.
