Welcome to the 2019 "NEWBIE LOUNGE"
Ask Your Consolidated / Combined AA Questions Here (flame free)
MODERATOR GUIDEPOST:
(This post can only be edited by moderators.)

Welcome to the Newbie Lounge!
Welcome to Flyertalk!

The Newbie Lounge is a place for newer and less experienced members to ask their questions about American Airlines and the AAdvantage program and have answered by our more experienced and knowledgeable members. Feel free to ask any question related to American Airlines and AAdvantage here.

NOTE: This is a "flame free" thread; flaming, personal criticism for "failing to search" etc. is not allowed (if posted, the post will be summarily deleted, the poster subject to sanctions).

Advanced questions posed by veteran FT users may be moved and / or merged into existing master or GUIDE threads, most of which have Wikiposts at the top of the page that contain summaries of important information.

We volunteer Moderators monitor this "lounge" thread to assist you as well. When browsing the fora, look at the page tops of the various forums. There will be a menu, and often "sticky" threads, and threads with header "wiki posts" (created and maintained by the FlyerTalk community) with important information relating to that forum / topic.

Don't hesitate to contact a moderator or another member if you have any additional questions. You can PM the Moderators by clicking on , which pops up a message box; the message goes to all this forum's Moderators. Note that unlike some sites with paid staff moderators, FlyerTalk Moderators are volunteers, and most work, travel, go on holiday, etc. You can Private Message us using the PM system (My Flyertalk) and our handles.

Q. How can I find information more easily than reading through all the threads? Now that I'm here, what do I do next?

Check out the following resources:

Searching can be key to finding important information and answers without waiting for someone to drop by and answer, and it helps prevent that information fragmentation. FlyerTalk Advanced Search can seem quirky to the infrequent user, but it's fairly powerful if one knows how to use it. There are several ways to search:

Forum basics: Now that the new AA has become by some measures "the world's largest airline", this new, combined has become a "mega-forum", very large, very active - and theoretically very difficult to find information and easy to lose one's place. Having to search for and sort through dozens - or more - of threads on baggage, airports, minimum connect times or the like could soon become unproductive and discouraging.

To prevent this from occurring, please note we try to:

Keep a few "sticky" threads: such as GUIDE posts, OSO / IROPS, etc. for urgent and quick reference, such as basic "where do I find" reasons

Keep threads to specific topics: Prevent information fragmentation and loss by consolidating questions, answers and discussion of one topic contained in one thread. (This also honors those members who have already shared valuable information and experiences.)

"Popular" threads are likely to have a Wikipost at the head that will summarize important information and have resource links. These are "community property", and as any wiki are established, maintained and updated by the members (with 90 days of tenure and 90 posts on FlyerTalk).

You may find your question or post merged into one of those threads. Be sure that we will leave a link behind from your original thread, and to look up to see if there's a wiki with information. We apologize for any possible inconvenience or difference between this forum and others, but we think you'll like some of the resources and tools here to enable more convenient, comfortable travel on AA and greater knowledge sharing.

Keep it welcoming: We're proud the members of both FFPs have kept the brickbats to a minimum; we want this forum to be welcoming, civil and information rich, so name calling (including calling a member one disagrees with "AApologist") and snark are not tolerated. Posts with such are likely to be summarily deleted in their entirety; repeated such behavior may result in suspension of one's membership privileges or being banned from this forum. Let's keep it friendly and in accordance with the FT Rules.

FlyerTalk Rules (We all agree to abide by these, and are held accountable.)

Question about AA Award Ticket Change Policies

My wife and I earned enough miles on our first AA international trip last year to now book a one-way J award trip. Right now, we are seeing availability for our itinerary using JL, but the connection is not optimal. My question is regarding AA policy on changing award tickets (should we book this one and a better connection later opens up). Is changing the award routing/ticket relatively straightforward and is there a penalty? Is there any added complication given that the actual operating carrier is a partner?

Many thanks.

Help! I was targeted for a AA "Get free Platinum status" Where I must fly 12,000 EQM's and spend $1,500 EQD's by May 15th to keep Platinum status for the rest of the year. My question is this:

If I buy a round trip ticket via AA website where the first leg of the ticket is completed prior to May 15th but the return is after May 15th what part of this ticket will count towards the challenge?

Heres the example JFK-TLV March 30 2019 and returning TLV-JFK May 31 2019 total cost $859.00 5677miles each way

1. I'm curious what millage will count towards the challenge?
2. Will the entire cost of the ticket credit towards the challenge as soon as I fly the first leg?
3. Will the millage from the first leg count towards the challenge as soon as its flown?

Thank you for your help and responses.

All the credits (including cost) will credit segment by segment as they are flown. The credit will be earned on the local date and time the flight departs but may not show for a day or two.

if you find 2 long haul business class awards that are anything close to what you want just book them now.
Not in 10 minutes time (they may have gone if you wait).

That is nonsense from AA (not surprising). You need to HUCA.

When you HUCA, tell them you have a ticket booked that you are thinking about changing, and give them your PNR. Then ask what is the Premium Economy fare on your exact flights. The difference between your original fare, and whatever the agent quotes you, is what you should have to pay to upfare into PE.

You can take any guesswork out by doing your homework beforehand, go to aa.com and search DFW-Kona on your exact flights, and see what the PE fare is. Again the difference between your original coach fare and that is what you should have to pay. Since you are moving to a higher class of service you don't have to pay the change fee.

you need to call and specify that you want to upfare to PE.

As as I mentioned before it’s the current PE fare - what you paid already = fare difference. You would need to pay the fare difference.

HUCA or ask for a supervisor.

Thanks, I assume this also applies to the checked bag for free that is tied to my AAdvantage #.

Hello,

I have a question about using evoucher to buy refundable ticket.

I have an evoucher which comes from customer relation because my flight was cancelled due to AA's fault. That voucher will expire in June 2019, but I don't have definite travel plan till then. Can I use that voucher to buy a fully refundable ticket in one year (say, purchase a May 2020 ticket in early June 2019), and then cancel that ticket to get a new voucher with the original value later (say, cancel the ticket in April 2020 and receive the refund in a new voucher to use when I have a travel plan)?

Thanks!

Panasonic IFE Map

I have noticed a problem with the Panasonic IFE In flight Map on recent flights. It seems to regularly stall until restarted by the crew. Is this a technical issue, is it done for security reasons? Certainly the old fuzzy map on the tiny screens were a lot more reliable, Does not seem to affect the A321's to Hawaii but I think that is THales and not Panasonic. Do any of the AA Mavens out there know the answer please?

The lounge reciprocity agreement does not extend to checked bags, unfortunately. You will have to pay for checked bags on AS unless you have their credit card or are elite with AS.

Arrival time in CDG not the same as scheduled?

Hello, I am hoping some of you can help... when I purchased our tickets for AA62 MIA-CDG the arrival time is scheduled for 9:30am. When searching the flight history and when I called the airline, they said our arrival time will be 7:30 am. Can anyone confirm when the (usual) arrival time for MIA-CDG is? I am aware there are delays, etc... but why would the ticket/schedule say 9:30am when we actually arrive at 7:30am?? I am trying to decide on train tickets from CDG and those two hours would make a large difference in which train ticket to get. Thanks for your help

Schedules say arrival is 0930. Actual arrival can be affected by winds aloft. See below.

If you’re just going to Paris, buy a ticket from the kiosks.

I have award tickets booked that are well into the future. If there is a change in say time or equip, will they notify me or will I have to notice it on my own?
