Could be part of an experiment / market research.

Infrequent flyer. Not loyal to AA.
No AA status
No spend to speak of.
What are other demographics?

Like value of home. If they have your address, they instantly know the value of your house.

Income - credit cards know you income. Maybe a CC referral.

With databases out there like Zillow, etc. marketing companies instantly know your home value and relative wealth.

Did he recently purchase any high-dollar tickets? My friend booked a business class ticket to CUN this summer and has had a few expensive round trips recently and was offered Free Platinum (by email, she didn't request anything) with a challenge to keep it for the year.

Could be a corporate deal through friend's employer. Not uncommon if employer does a lot of AA business.

It probably isnt for a whole year. 3 or 4 months, perhaps?

A nice treat. Hope your friend can use it and enjoy. I was given Platinum for a little bit earlier this year and I went lounge hopping in NRT. Was fun!

I thought the rolling EQD was the last tie breaker for upgrades and status (obviously) and fare class came first.
To be fair, I did get offered to expedite my Plat Pro Status for "just" $915.00. So if I really wanted it two days sooner I could have had it.
Rolling EQD is the *first* tie breaker within each status.

The first tie breaker is upgrade instrument, rolling EQD is second.

To be pedantic, neither rolling EQD nor upgrade type are "tie-breakers" since they don't break ties. They are sort criteria, which I believe include:
  1. status
  2. upgrade type (segment vs SWU)
  3. fare type (as three categories: full fare, all other revenue fares, awards for EXP/CK)
  4. rolling EQD
Then, as a tie-breaker, timestamp of upgrade request, and in the unlikely event a second tie-breaker is needed, passenger name.

I actually received one of these offers and am in the middle of flying it out for full status next year. Terms were fly 20K PQM / 3K PQD from 9/22 to 12/22.

I have the AA Citi Exec card but only had about $800 PQD in 2016 and $200 in 2017 when the offer rolled in. Not sure why I was targeted or what the metrics were.

Believe the web portal was aa.com/getplatinumpro

I also received one earlier in the year (around April) but had not gone through my mail in 2 months and by the time I tried to register the offer had expired. Terms were the same.
