Received the same thing only for Gold and 10 x 500-mile upgrades. Signed up for it because, well why not? Doubt I'll actually try to hit the qualifications to extend through next year, if it happens it happens, but still useful for a few months I suppose if I wind up on AA.

Free Platinum Status - Check Your Email

Check your email...I just received an email from AA offering me free platinum status through Dec 22, 2017 and 20 500-mile upgrade certificates. There is an offer code that you need to use to register for the promotion. It was a targeted email.

BTW, I currently have no status, but I was Gold last year, and Platinum 2-4 years ago.

Received the Platinum offer. Note that I was Gold last year and Platinum for a few years before that.

nice offer, especially those stickers. Wish I could get some of those stickers for upgrading my wife when I travel with her.

I wonder how long it will take (with this being my first year in 10+ of 0 paid flights on AA and therefore status ending in early 2018) before I start getting status handed to me for free while those that have remained loyal get the shAAft.

Well, nothing for me. I have backed off AA a lot and am half heartedly going for Gold again this year. But I'm not a big spender so surely that has something to do with it.

Edited to add: looks like it's only for those who currently have no status...

Oh wow that's amazing! Makes me feel so much better for even trying to qualify the hard way. Screw AA.

I am not too sure Platinum holds any benefit for me. I was EXP for 12 years, then dropped to PLT for two years, and now been back at EXP for 2 years. This year was absolutely the worst, as in 54 flights so far this year, I am less than 10% in F/J. Several times, I have been #15 or more on the upgrade list.
If I am going to fly coach next year, Virgin and United fly my common routes direct and I am certainly going to try it.

I think that AA is seeing some of their elites not flying as much this year due to changes in the program and they are trying to recruit new blood. I myself, as an EXP for the past 10 years have substantially reduced my flying with AA, only have about 12k EQM 2.5k EQP so far, will certainly make GLD this year with no problems, however, not looking for more. I've shifted a lot of my domestic flights to B6 due to economics, and international flights will go with best price and route, regardless of carrier.

Shame on you AA.

Would be interesting to learn prior status, current flying habits of those being offered status. As others have stated, it is for a slow part of the year, ends before the holiday travel season, but it does put further pressure on upgrade competition for those given temporary PLT.

I am personally insulted by the sticker giveaway, although I still fly AA enough to never run out - despite moving enough travel to AS this year to earn MVPG for 2018 (early Oct).
