Welcome to the 2017 "NEWBIE LOUNGE"
Ask Your Consolidated / Combined AA Questions Here (flame free)
MODERATOR GUIDEPOST:
(This post can only be edited by moderators.)

Welcome to the Newbie Lounge!
Welcome to Flyertalk!

The Newbie Lounge is a place for newer and less experienced members to ask their questions about American Airlines and the AAdvantage program and have answered by our more experienced and knowledgeable members. Feel free to ask any question related to American Airlines and AAdvantage here.

NOTE: This is a "flame free" thread; flaming, personal criticism for "failing to search" etc. is not allowed (if posted, the post will be summarily deleted, the poster subject to sanctions).

Advanced questions posed by veteran FT users may be moved and / or merged into existing master or GUIDE threads, most of which have Wikiposts at the top of the page that contain summaries of important information.

We volunteer Moderators monitor this "lounge" thread to assist you as well. When browsing the fora, look at the page tops of the various forums. There will be a menu, and often "sticky" threads, and threads with header "wiki posts" (created and maintained by the FlyerTalk community) with important information relating to that forum / topic.

Don't hesitate to contact a moderator or another member if you have any additional questions. You can PM the Moderators by clicking on , which pops up a message box; the message goes to all this forum's Moderators. Note that unlike some sites with paid staff moderators, FlyerTalk Moderators are volunteers, and most work, travel, go on holiday, etc. You can Private Message us using the PM system (My Flyertalk) and our handles.

We're glad you've chosen to join the Flyertalk frequent flyer community!

Q. How can I find information more easily than reading through all the threads? Now that I'm here, what do I do next?

Check out the following resources:

Searching can be key to finding important information and answers without waiting for someone to drop by and answer, and it helps prevent that information fragmentation. FlyerTalk Advanced Search can seem quirky to the infrequent user, but it's fairly powerful if one knows how to use it. There are several ways to search:

Forum basics: Now that the new AA has become by some measures "the world's largest airline", this new, combined has become a "mega-forum", very large, very active - and theoretically very difficult to find information and easy to lose one's place. Having to search for and sort through dozens - or more - of threads on baggage, airports, minimum connect times or the like could soon become unproductive and discouraging.

To prevent this from occurring, please note we try to:

Keep a few "sticky" threads: such as GUIDE posts, OSO / IROPS, etc. for urgent and quick reference, such as basic "where do I find" reasons

Keep threads to specific topics: Prevent information fragmentation and loss by consolidating questions, answers and discussion of one topic contained in one thread. (This also honors those members who have already shared valuable information and experiences.)

"Popular" threads are likely to have a Wikipost at the head that will summarize important information and have resource links. These are "community property", and as any wiki are established, maintained and updated by the members (with 90 days of tenure and 90 posts on FlyerTalk).

You may find your question or post merged into one of those threads. Be sure that we will leave a link behind from your original thread, and to look up to see if there's a wiki with information. We apologize for any possible inconvenience or difference between this forum and others, but we think you'll like some of the resources and tools here to enable more convenient, comfortable travel on AA and greater knowledge sharing.

Keep it welcoming: We're proud the members of both FFPs have kept the brickbats to a minimum; we want this forum to be welcoming, civil and information rich, so name calling (including calling a member one disagrees with "AApologist") and snark are not tolerated. Posts with such are likely to be summarily deleted in their entirety; repeated such behavior may result in suspension of one's membership privileges or being banned from this forum. Let's keep it friendly and in accordance with the FT Rules.

FlyerTalk Rules (We all agree to abide by these, and are held accountable.)
NOTE: The older AA NEWBIE LOUNGE post thread is here

Second question - will I be able to check in online for my AA flights, or will I have to do that at the airport?

Third question - this one is, probably, wishful thinking! Can I get AA miles for the Etihad portions, instead of/in addition to, the Etihad miles? I've only used Etihad once before, in 2012, and might not ever use them again. I booked through Etihad as it was cheaper than booking through AA.

None of these are award flights - they are all paid. Thanks for a place to put the newbie questions!
Welcome to FT. You need to add your AAdvantage number to the reservation for it to remain in the My Trips section. If your EY number is on the reservation then it won't show up automatically at aa.com. If it's an eligible flight then you should be able to earn AA miles for the EY flights (but you cannot earn both AA & EY miles for the same flight).

For check-in, you should be able to check-in online for the AA flights, but this can vary. Last month my girlfriend and I flew RDU-LHR-AUH on AA/EY, she was able to check-in online fine, but I was not. Go figure.

Multi-city/flights on rev booking - AA charges cancellation per sector?

I am attempting to book a D class & RT flight from CAI with multiple sectors on revenue ticket and all sectors have the same "DNE0F6R5" fare rules (2 sectors are on BA, all others on AA metal). If I cancel (assuming reading below rule means I can?), would AA charge me cancellation fare for each sector or only once for the whole booking, and refund me the remainder?

Penalties CANCELLATIONS ANY TIME CHARGE EGP 650.00 FOR CANCEL/NO-SHOW/REFUND. CHILD/INFANT DISCOUNTS APPLY. WAIVED FOR DEATH OF PASSENGER OR FAMILY MEMBER. From what I can see, "CHARGE EGP 650.00 FOR CANCEL/NO-SHOW/REFUND." means that's for the entire PNR, not sectors, and if all segments are on this DNE0F6R5 fare basis, no lower fare detailed rules exist to supersede this.

Thanks for the quick reply! I have one follow up. Where can I add the AA number? I've looked on AA and Etihad's sites, but am not finding it. Do I need to call AA for this?

thank you that's what I was afraid of upgrading to Hawaii would be $$$ for 5 people

Follow-up suggestion -

Make sure to remove the EY FF# if you wish to earn AA miles. If it's in there, there's a very likely chance for the miles to post to EY instead of AA.
You can remove the EY FF# and it'll still show up for EY since it was booked with them.

The fee is per ticket per the most restrictive set of rules on that ticket. As long as everything is issued on one ticket and there's no other more restrictive set of rules (no refunds, higher change fee, no changes allowed, etc) then that's the fee to cancel the whole ticket.

If you're buying this straight from BA/AA in one teansaction then you shouldn't need worry about it being issued on multiple tickets. If booking through a TA/OTA it could be an issue.

Hi
Not sure if this would be best posted in a new thread - happy to do so if appropriate!

Basically my daughter has booked a flight to SJO (San Jose, Costa Rica) next Thursday. Route is LHR - DFW - SJO with just a 1 hr 25 minute gap between arriving at DFW and the SJO flight departing.

She travelling in coach and doesn't have global entry and is a fairly inexperienced traveller.

Is this a realistic connection time (it must meet MCT or AA wouldn't sell it I guess!) Are there any pitfalls to watch out for at DFW specially? If she lands at dFW at the lines at immigration are really long is there any kind of priority lanes for short connections?
I guess she will need to pick up her checked bag go through customs then send it on its way again?
And finally, if she does miss the connection what does AA do to look after her? I don't think there is another flight to SJO the same day.

Thanks in advance and sorry for all the questions!

Make sure they tag her bag as ITI at LHR checkin. This will allow her luggage to be transfered without picking it up and clearing customs with it.

If she misses her flight then the airline that flew her in is responsible for rebooking her. Even if it's an AA flight number, if it's BA operated, then BA is responsible for rebooking her. Since she flew in from the EU they'll be required to offer duty of care which means put her up in a hotel/provide meals/etc. No other compensation would be due if she misconduct due to customs/immigration delays. If however the flight from LHR is delayed and she misses the flight then she'll be possibly due compensation of up to 600Euro. They'll rebook on the next AA flight(s) that get her to destination. This may mean an extra connection and/or a day delay.

Which country is she a citizen of? If not US/CANADA then has she visited the US before since the requirement for an ESTA started?

She is a British citizen and the flights were booked with AA and she's on AA metal (one single ticket, not separate ones)

Meant to say thank you for the prompt response and the helpful information

I run into this frequently when booking AA metal with BA miles. I've found the most efficient solution is to Direct Message @AmericanAir on twitter and ask them to delete the EY number and add your AAdvantage info. Make sure you have your record locator or e-ticket number handy.

Long time FTer but haven't flown AA since about 1996 believe it or not (live in Atlanta so that's probably why). We got a great return fare thru BA from ATL-FRA. Return flights are FRA-DFW-ATL on AA. Managed to snag window and aisle in row 13 for DFW-ATL at no charge. For FRA-DFW (newly configured 772), we can't upgrade with miles as AA tells me ticket is NO CHANGES. Seats are mostly wide open, but only $$ seats (except for a few middles). 25A & 25B (two seat row at rear of forward economy cabin) is open for $86pp. Should I snag that while I can (or does the proximity to the restroom make it a bad choice?) Or should I wait until T-24 and see what opens up. Is it possible that most of the preferred seats will be snagged by Gold, Plat, ExecPlats?

TIA.

Hi;

Expertflyer shows I class availability on a flight I want (LAX-JFK) but AA.com shows only the D fare, which is higher.

Does that mean the I fare is bookable through another channel? Any other insights, and tips on what to do?

Adding flight segments

I recently booked flights on AA from LAX to SYD and return.

I would like to add PIT-LAX at the beginning and LAX-PIT at the end (both on AA).

I assume I can't add them to the current reservation without a change fee, so I'll have to book a separate reservation.

Question 1: Is there anyway to combine the reservations or at least make it possible so that when I check in that AA is aware of the connection in LAX?

Question 2: will I be able to get AA to check my bag through from SYD to PIT (I know I have to retrieve it at customs).

Question 3: if I misconnect on the return due to a late SYD-LAX flight is AA likely to treat me as that and not as a no-show?

Thanks
