MODERATOR GUIDEPOST:
(This post can only be edited by moderators.)

Welcome to the Newbie Lounge!
Welcome to Flyertalk!

The Newbie Lounge is a place for newer and less experienced members to ask their questions about American Airlines and the AAdvantage program and have answered by our more experienced and knowledgeable members. Feel free to ask any question related to American Airlines and AAdvantage here.

NOTE: This is a "flame free" thread; flaming, personal criticism for "failing to search" etc. is not allowed (if posted, the post will be summarily deleted, the poster subject to sanctions).

Advanced questions posed by veteran FT users may be moved and / or merged into existing master or GUIDE threads, most of which have Wikiposts at the top of the page that contain summaries of important information.

We volunteer Moderators monitor this "lounge" thread to assist you as well. When browsing the fora, look at the page tops of the various forums. There will be a menu, and often "sticky" threads, and threads with header "wiki posts" (created and maintained by the FlyerTalk community) with important information relating to that forum / topic.

Don't hesitate to contact a moderator or another member if you have any additional questions. You can PM the Moderators by clicking on , which pops up a message box; the message goes to all this forum's Moderators. Note that unlike some sites with paid staff moderators, FlyerTalk Moderators are volunteers, and most work, travel, go on holiday, etc. You can Private Message us using the PM system (My Flyertalk) and our handles.

Q. How can I find information more easily than reading through all the threads? Now that I'm here, what do I do next?

Check out the following resources:

Searching can be key to finding important information and answers without waiting for someone to drop by and answer, and it helps prevent that information fragmentation. FlyerTalk Advanced Search can seem quirky to the infrequent user, but it's fairly powerful if one knows how to use it. There are several ways to search:

Forum basics: Now that the new AA has become by some measures "the world's largest airline", this new, combined has become a "mega-forum", very large, very active - and theoretically very difficult to find information and easy to lose one's place. Having to search for and sort through dozens - or more - of threads on baggage, airports, minimum connect times or the like could soon become unproductive and discouraging.

To prevent this from occurring, please note we try to:

Keep a few "sticky" threads: such as GUIDE posts, OSO / IROPS, etc. for urgent and quick reference, such as basic "where do I find" reasons

Keep threads to specific topics: Prevent information fragmentation and loss by consolidating questions, answers and discussion of one topic contained in one thread. (This also honors those members who have already shared valuable information and experiences.)

"Popular" threads are likely to have a Wikipost at the head that will summarize important information and have resource links. These are "community property", and as any wiki are established, maintained and updated by the members (with 90 days of tenure and 90 posts on FlyerTalk).

You may find your question or post merged into one of those threads. Be sure that we will leave a link behind from your original thread, and to look up to see if there's a wiki with information. We apologize for any possible inconvenience or difference between this forum and others, but we think you'll like some of the resources and tools here to enable more convenient, comfortable travel on AA and greater knowledge sharing.

Keep it welcoming: We're proud the members of both FFPs have kept the brickbats to a minimum; we want this forum to be welcoming, civil and information rich, so name calling (including calling a member one disagrees with "AApologist") and snark are not tolerated. Posts with such are likely to be summarily deleted in their entirety; repeated such behavior may result in suspension of one's membership privileges or being banned from this forum. Let's keep it friendly and in accordance with the FT Rules.

FlyerTalk Rules (We all agree to abide by these, and are held accountable.)
NOTE: The older AA NEWBIE LOUNGE post thread is here

I'm flying OGG-LAX on AA and then later on LAX-LHR on BA. I wouldn't mind a shower sometime during the day. I'm guessing there are showers in the OW lounge in the TBIT but is there an arrivals facility in T4?

Question about AA fare class and JAL fare class

Hi all,

I just came back from a Asia trip and I'm not sure the outbound leg was given the correct fare class.

I flew BOS - NRT on JAL metal (JAL007), but sold as AA8475. When I looked in my AAdvantage, it shows as Q fare, but the printed ticket shows a Y.

I'm going to call in to see what the deal is, but how should the EQM/EQD be structured for this flight?

There's no arrivals lounge in T4. OGG-LAX is domestic so you will deplane airside just like any other normal domestic flight. T4/T5/T6 and TBIT are all connected airside, so your best bet is just to head straight to TBIT and use the oneworld lounge there for showers. The AA lounges at LAX are a bit of a mess at the moment.

What do you mean by printed ticket?

Many foreign carriers print the generic booking code on the boarding pass but that doesn't correspond to the actual booking code you paid for. So your boarding pass will say "Y" for economy but you may have actually booked a Q, O, N, M etc fare code. However, you should always receive credit for the fare code you originally booked.

International full Y fares are typically very expensive. For a trip like BOS-NRT, unless you paid most likely thousands of dollars for your ticket, you weren't booked on a full Y fare.

I'm pretty sure JAL just puts Y, C, and F on boarding passes to distinguish between Economy, Business, and First respectively.

What fare does it show on your reservation? Most likely it wasn't Y for the reason JJeffrey mentioned.

I have to get the original email from my work travel coordinator to see the original fare class. What got me thinking was that it listed as a Q fare and the JAL/AA chart did not have that specific letter. It was worth hoping at least.

Another newbie question.

How likely is it to get F upgrade on day of departure, at the gate, from DFW-HNL?

I'm flying MCI-DFW-HNL tomorrow. Paid the Main Cabin Extra for the DFW-HNL leg. Economy on the MCI-DFW leg booking code C. (which I'm thinking about upgrading to F as a $50 option since AA shows F class gets 3 bags checked free...which is nice to me as I'll be living in hawaii for about 6 months so packing lot of things...but this is another question for the baggage sticky). DFW-HNL is booking code N.

I'm a regular AAdvantage member, no status, I just downgraded out of my AAdvantage Aviator Red card....doh!.

At the check-in screen today it allows for F upgrade for $51 from MCI-DFW, and says no F upgrade available for DFW-HNL.

Thanks for any help!!!

Actually, the JL table lists a Q class; perhaps you were looking at the domestic one, which does not? And the AA table has it as well.

MCT at JFK INT to DOM

I have searched this but cannot find up to date information.

I'm flying to JFK with BA and connecting on to an AA domestic flight on a single ticket There is a terminal change with no preclearance. AA has brought forward the time of the domestic flight so that the connection time is just 1 hour 45 mins, which I understand is bang on MCT, but would like this confirmed. Otherwise, I'll call AA and change the domestic flight.

This sounds very tight to me knowing what the immigration lines at JFK can be like at times. Is this achievable, assuming the BA flight arrives on time? This is on 25 Nov (Thanksgiving Saturday) arriving at JFK at around 2pm.

Any help gratefully received

Are there more flights that night going to your final destination?

Is this a paid or award ticket? Did you book through BA or AA?

You really don't want to get stuck anywhere in the US that day, as that Sunday is one of the busiest travel days of the year.

i asked this a couple of weeks ago - but is it possible that telephone agents can see different availability on partner airlines compared to aa.com? particularly for partner awards, where U class is showing available on EF?

cheers

I am 110% sure JAL does exactly this. As the ticket was sold by AA as a codeshare, accrual will be based on AA's fare codes (which is lucky, since JAL accumulates mileage at a minuscule rate on discounted fares).

ETA: if I recall correctly, the actual fare bucket is on your boarding pass, stub side, just to the RIGHT of the date and unlabeled (the "class" indicator is the cabin code F/C/W/Y, not the paid fare).

quick seating related please (please let me know if there's a better place to ask this).

flying in Y LHR MIA this week on a 772. Currently have 13H (on a 3-4-3 seat map) as no other front row seats available. The 3 seats to my left are blocked according to EF.

Are those basinet seats? what happens with them if no basinet is required? do they stay blocked and thus empty?

Flight is on Thursday and looks pretty empty. Am I best staying there or better off moving to another row hoping to have an empty row to myself? Or shall I stay put until check in at the airport and then ask for loads and be moved if there's empty rows?

thank you in advance.
