AAdvantage Aviator Silver and Red Cards from BarclayCard
There are five AAdvantage-linked Aviator-branded cards by Barclaycard. Two of them can be applied for directly, the other three are upgrades or downgrades after receiving a Red card. The Many Flavors of Barclaycard AAdvantage Aviator
Where can I see information on all available Barclays Barclaycard AAdvantage cards?
Aviator Red (On AA.com)
Aviator Silver (On AA.com)
Aviator Business (On AA.com)
Red cardholders may receive an offer to upgrade to Aviator Silver after a period of time that varies, usually 3-11 months. The offer appears in the online "Offers" section, if it is declined there may be no simple way to receive the upgrade. Be careful with your clicking! Silver benefits begin at the start of the next statement, but the increased annual fee won't hit until the next card-member year starts.

I spoke with a nice Barclay agent last week. I asked about the ending of the AA arrangement. She indicated that Citi would be contacting Barclay holders.
I asked about converting my AA Barclay to another Barclay card and she said there could be retaining offers.
Here is what suspect is going to happen:
1. Citi sends you information about offering you a credit card to replace your Barclay. (Barclay providing names to Citi). You likely quick approval, assuming good credit. Suspect they might let you choose which card you want - and maybe a recommendation - say Red > Plat and Silver > Globe. They may give you a promo miles bonus.
2. Barclay simple sends you notice that the AA credit card is ending and give you a retaining offer if you wish to switch to another Barclay card. Likely no mention of Citi.
3. So no coordination between the two visible to the customer.

It has been happening for several months now. The Barclay's card isn't going anywhere. You will simply get a new non-AA Barclay's card in the mail AND a new Citi Globe card if you agree to the T&C. Barclay's has been increasing credit limits and offering lower interest rates to entice cardholders to stay. I assume the arrangement with the new Citi and AA offered Barclay's some sort of financial compensation to cough up its current Aviator client list. I have the Silver Aviator and applied for the Citi Globe. I hold both cards currently. I think that the current 90K SUB to get the Citi Globe is targeting current Aviator holders. I think once the official conversion takes place that offer will disappear. In the end, I believe most Aviator cardholders will end up with two credit cards...a non-AA Barclay's and a Citi/AA Globe.

Maybe they plan on reviving their Arrivals product line?
AAdvantage sent me an email today touting the benefits of my Aviator Silver card. I guess its because my annual fee is about to post any day now. There is nothing in the email about any changes coming. Given how they tout the Silver specific benefits,

it will be interesting to see if they will take those away mid-membership year if the card transitions to something else.

My wife had the Aviator red card. We didn't want to bother with the transition, and wanted to get the sign-up bonus miles with a new Citi card instead of being transitioned with likely not receiving any bonus. So, she signed up for the Citi AA Platinum to get the bonus and then cancelled the Aviator red. I already have the Executive card, so no need for me to do anything.

Wouldn’t it be a new line of credit in your credit file even if you got it during the transition (say, without hard pull), and thus count towards 5/24?

A scenario I wouldn't be pleased with is if all of a sudden I get a letter from Citi saying "here's your new Platinum card", making me ineligible for SUB on that card along with taking up a 5/24 slot.

I actually don't think Chase will see this as a new card, but don't take that as gospel.

I've never had to apply or sign-up for the new card in this or similar situations. Our accounts are assignable without our consent and that's how this process typically works - the new issuer just sends you a new card and provides updated account, payment, and customer service info.
Lots of unknowns, and I think I won’t stick around to see what Citi/Barclays are going to do. I’ll likely cancel the Silver card next week.

I was here when Barclays acquired the portfolio from Bank of America, and that's exactly how it happened. No guarantee it's going to work that exactly this time, but the accounts were just reassigned as-is. We just received notifications, no actions required or choices to be made, other than your normal option to close your account at any time if you wish.
