Covid-19 Update:
For further information on AA awards see:
HELP DESK: MileSAAver / SAAver Award Availability - Help, Assistance & Discussion
and
AA oneworld and Other Airline Partner Award information, rules (2015 on)
N.B. Upgrades on QR book into fares not granted EQD/EQM by AA. If you're upgraded on QR, be prepared for pushback from some AA agents. You may have to submit a formal request with accompanying documentation reflecting you purchased an eligible fare class.
NOTE:AA has removed most EY and QR award access from aa.com due to a glitch booking these:
If you experience difficulties with the AA reservations system, you may be able to book by calling AA Australia (+61 2-9101-1948 ) then press 4 - or the New Zealand number (+64 09-308-4014) as an alternative - although the call center is actually in Suva, Fiji (South African agency Mindpearl) - as they can often see the inventory more reliably, and you can book.
NOTE: USA Canada travel on QR will earn EQ miles etc. in accordance with the fare class purchased.

AA miles earning on QR changed 1 May 2016 (Link):
Minimum miles guarantee applies.
Checking QR award availability:
You can check QR availability on AA's site, BA's site, QF's site, www.awardnexus.com (which pulls from BA and/or QF), or the KVS tool. (A certain number of searches are free to FlyerTalk members at AwardNexus; click the "more signup options" link under the green Purchase button to sign up as a FlyerTalk member.)
When checking QR award availability, you have to check each segment individually. Both BA and QF can generate very misleading information if you try to check QR award availability all the way through [xxx-(DOH)-yyy] in one step. Be aware AA can only book 330 days out, even if you see availability farther out.
Awards on QR may not be visible to AA agents if a multi-segment itinerary is requested; broken into individual segments will generally reveal availability, however.
As well, AA Australia or New Zealand (actually MindPearl in Fiji) can often see and book AA awards on QR US-based ones might not be able to.
From danger: For AA awards, Economy is X, Business is U, First is Z. NOTE: Those with Z (First) awards may see "Z (Business Class)" shown on the QR website; this is a known glitch.
As well, QR sells intra gulf two class service as First and Economy, as AA does domestically. This can cause some issues with a Business flight including a Gulf "First" flight potentially incurring an F award redemption.
From hotelmotel: "Got my QR PNR from AA. Popped over to QR and selected seats." (AAdvantage award.)
Days of the week: To/from the USA, especially in business class, Qatar often only offers awards seats for Mon..Thu departures, not Fri..Sun departures. So makes sure you check different parts of the week, and not just always weekends (if you're not finding anything on weekends).
NOTE: At DOH / Hamad International Airport, lounges as follows:
Qatar Airways Al Safwa First Lounge (not a oneworld lounge): only accessible to those flying First Class on Qatar or oneworld airlines and QRPC Platniums flying in ticketed Business (not oneworld Emeralds flying other lower classes of service)
Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Business Lounge (not a oneworld lounge): only accessible to those flying Business Class on Qatar or oneworld (not oneworld Sapphire flying lower classes of service)
Oryx Lounge: Third party lounge.
Qatar Airways HIA First Class Lounge (oneworld lounge): First Class ticketed customers, Emerald members, as well as their accompanying guests, travelling on Qatar Airways and other oneworld member flights.
Qatar Airways HIA Business Class Lounge (oneworld lounge): First and Business Class ticketed customers, Emerald and Sapphire members, as well as their accompanying guests, travelling on Qatar Airways and other oneworld member flights.
Arrivals Lounges (not oneworld lounges): only accessible to those arriving in First or Business Class on Qatar Airways (not oneworld Sapphire flying other oneworld airlines or other classes of service)
See FT: QR Lounges at HIA
Selecting Qatar Airways Seats
If you want to assign a seat after booking an award, you should first try the Qatar website or app. If you experience issues, please try a partner site like Royal Jordanian, Malaysia Airlines, or Sri-Lankan. You can also reach out to the QR Twitter team to fix your record in order to be able to select seats on their own site.
- Sapphire+ status pax are temporarily allowed to use the Al Mourjan Business Lounge
- Only tickets issued on QR 157 stock are eligible for the Extending Our Commitment (EOC) rebooking policy

From One Mile at a Time (link)
Bottom Line
For the time being you’ll have to call American if you want to ticket AAdvantage awards on Etihad & Qatar that aren’t for travel to & from the US or Canada. It makes sense that American took these awards “offline,” and now it also makes sense why so many passengers have been having issues with checked bags on awards.

I could potentially ask AA to split it into 3 separate awards. And ticket/price each segment individually.
That would give us an overnight in Parisz
Ill call AA in the morning and see if they’re onboard with that idea.

So I tried reading that thread about married segment rules. My eyes glazed over.
Will plan on a long stay in Al mourjan lounge and wander around the airport during quieter times.
Unfortunately, india is considered a Red list Covid country for the Qatar entry. So we won’t be able to exit airport and sightsee during that stop. They require one day hotel quarantine for red list countries,

You can also look at DEL-ORD connections involving Etihad and/or RJ.
I commend your commonsense that even under pressure you are thinking clearly enough to not consider BA. I would have done the same.

Called AA and decided not to mess with the booking at this point. The tickets would need reissue and the agent didn’t sound confident that things would actually reissue successfully.
Will do our best to deplete the AM bubbly supply during the downtime. Unless Qatar relaxes their entry policy by the 26th of March.

I'm having a reoccurring problem that only seems to happen when I'm searching for QR operated awards & was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and how you resolved it. In a nutshell, AA doesn't seem to "like" the number of searches I'm cycling through, almost as though it thinks I'm a robot, even when logged into my account. Typically, anywhere after 8-20 searches the calendar function becomes unavailable, the searches won't complete, my account becomes unavailable, and/or I can't log into my account until I reboot my laptop. Sometimes I can resolve it temporarily but after a few days of temporary resolutions to force the searches, mostly then it only resolves completely once I actively cease those specific searches on AA for a few days.
To be clear what I'm doing --- I'm manually searching for J awards from North American QR service cities (BOS, PHL, JFK, IAD, ATL, MIA, IAH, ORD, DFW, LAX, SFO, SEA, YUL) to DOH, DAR, JRO, ZNZ, and MLE, for awards using the calendar function.
I know this sounds wacky, especially that it only seems to happen when I'm searching these QR routes. It's almost like AA is actively trying to discourage me from finding QR awards. Which I know is crazy. Has anyone experienced anything like this with AA searches?

Just to close the loop on the segment change. I called AA again today. The app kept showing me the 2 J awards available on the 3pm to CDG. And the siren call was irresistible.
Agent was able to book the 3pm without any trouble. Those segments must have gotten married or divorced or something in the last couple days.
Its updated. We have seats assigned. And looking forward to our first time in Paris.

If cancel award tickets , do they automatically reload (QR) and when ?
Trying to get an idea if I should take my chances or not !
Two months ago , I booked AA award MLE-DOH-SOF , two seats in F on the leased CX aircraft for 62,5k each , second segment in J.
A week ago , second segment got cancelled and we were rebooked on the day before , sadly there was no F availability anymore and only J availability for the first segment , that’s on A320 , so we got J on both segments and were refunded the miles difference between F and J class.
Now there is F availability for the two other flights on the same day of departure , but only coach for the second segment . Basically now for 62,5k miles you get F on the first segment and economy for the second one .
My question is if I cancel my booking for two , are the two J seats that already have for the second segment would automatically reload (QR operated flights ) in AAdvantage ? What’s the best approach to handle this situation!
Regards ,
Stan

There is no guarantee that QR will make those J class award seats available again. There's no way to know before you cancel your current trip and then look for seats.

I am not seeing any QR options at all. Whether I go Cairo to the US or Dubai or just from Doha. Dubai and Cairo are all BA. Doha is AA's flight. I havent looked at every single day as that would be really time consuming on AA site but I looked at probably 10-15 days in July & August and another 10-15 days in November & December. Was just wondering are QR flights just sold out through AA or is something else going on?
Thanks
