Mileage and copayment upgrades on American Airlines
As of May 20, 2017 upgrade prioritization is:
Enjoy a higher cabin of service Link.
Use your AAdvantage miles to upgrade on flights marketed and operated by American Airlines or American Eagle for yourself or anyone you designate.
Upgrades are valid to the next cabin of service* and are valid for a single one-way trip with a maximum of three segments. Upgrades are subject to capacity controls. Excluding award tickets, the following eligible fare types can be upgraded:
*E.g. Economy to Business, Business to three class First. At this time Premium Economy is treated as Economy for upgrade purposes.
See the chart here for cost in miles and dollars.
NOTE: The most expensive fare classes, full fare Economy Y, full fare Premium Economy W, and full fare Business J, may be upgraded without copay and at a lower cost in miles. See here.
Taxes and carrier-imposed fees:
Co-payment is non-refundable and inclusive of U.S. excise tax where applicable.
Mileage upgrade award tickets are subject to applicable taxes and security fees and may incur additional taxes as a result of upgrading to a higher class cabin (includes higher U.K. Air Passenger Duty If Flight originates in the UK or is a connecting flight with a connection time of 24:00 or more)..)
NOTE:
Miles and copay upgrades are to the next available cabin of service, are based on inventory being available, usable on AA marketed and operated flights (not codeshares operated by other airlines, not on other airlines' prime flights - BA and IB allow miles upgrades with AA miles but are very different and therefore not treated here).
See AA Participating Airline Upgrade Award - BA, IB, including codeshares (master thd), and note “one class of service” means Y to PE, PE to J, J to F where available on BA.
If the required inventory exists, they can be booked positively (i.e. upgraded immediately); if not, the request is wait listed. Wait list clearance is by status (EXP highest, no status lowest), and within status priority is by rolling 12 month EQD spend. Elites can have one traveling companion on the same PNR "borrow" their status for upgrade wait list purposes, until the request goes to the airport list, where you may want to assure your travel companion continues to hold your “borrowed” status for upgrade purposes.
Copays are waived for CK on all flights.
Frequently Asked Questions / FAQ:
Q. It says the upgrade fees are nonrefundable. Do I lose my miles and money if I'm not upgraded?
If your upgrade request does not go through, miles and copay are in fact refunded.
Q. If I am waitlisted, in what priority order are upgrades processed?
Upgrades are processed first by AAdvantage status tier, secondarily by type of upgrade, thirdly by the previous rolling 12 month EQD spend.
Q. Which has higher priority if all other preceding factors are the same? An upgraded with miles + copay, or an upgraded with SWU?
They have equal priority. A few reports state copay + upgrade have been given priority at some overseas stations.
Q. How soon will I know if my upgrade came through?
It can happen anytime inventory opens, from the time you book until the time you board. (Your request, including date and time of request, should carry over automatically to the airport list.)
Q. How soon will I know if my upgrade came through?
It can happen anytime inventory opens, from the time you book until the time you board. (Your request, including date and time of request, should carry over automatically to the airport list.)
Q. What happens to my booked seat whilst I'm waitlisted? If my upgrade doesn't come through, do I lose my reserved seat?
You normally retain your booked seat until (if) your upgrade comes through.
Q. How many flights can I upgrade with a single miles plus copay upgrade?
You may (assuming available inventory) upgrade up to three segments on the same ticketed itinerary (e.g. LHR-ORD-MIA-EZE, as long as they are on the same PNR).
Q. Can I look at AAnytime or MileSAAver award space to determine upgrade availability?
No. MileSAAver availability may be a good indication upgrade space may become available, but SAAver and upgrade inventories are separate.
Q. What fare inventory do I need to upgrade?
You need available "C" inventory to upgrade to two class domestic First and three class Business, "A" to three class First. These are not shown on aa.com, but some services (e.g. ExpertFlyer) do show them. The only way to reliably search for upgrade space on Expertflyer or other services is segment by segment. The reason for this is that by rule if C is available on the stand alone segment then the upgrade is allowed.
Q. I'm Executive Platinum. If I purchase an upgrade for someone without status, will they "borrow" my status for upgrade purposes?
They will if they are flying as your single traveling companion on the same flights. Otherwise, their status will determine their position on the upgrade wait list. This "borrowed" status was previously lost once the flight has gone to airport control; it doesn’t now, but it pays to check and see if it has been mismanaged by software - it can be restored when it has passed to airport control.
Q. Which miles earning and fare conditions will apply to my upgraded flights?
You will earn miles (award miles -- RDM -- and EQM) and EQ Dollars credit as determined by your originally purchased fare, and the applicable fare rules will also be determined by your originally purchased fare.

FleyeSkyHigh and AAExecPlatFlyer thank you for the responses. I took the liberty of adding this information into the FAQ section of the wiki.
At this point, I have been waitlisted for a miles + copay upgrade on the return.
My wife has platinum status with plenty of 500 mile upgrades available. I have gold status. I am thinking of just splitting our PNRs. That way, on the outbound, we have a chance at an upgrade using her certs for two of us.
The AA phone rep advised against this, as she said it would impact the priority for the miles + copay upgrade on the return. While that is true, in my time using Expertflyer to monitor availability, its very rare that I ever see four seats open at a time. Rather its one or two at a time until closer in. When that happens, the party of four gets passed over and then others on the list with smaller parties get the upgrades. This happens all the way through check in. So I am inclined to go ahead and split. If we get split up, then my wife and daughter get the good seats.
Heck, if we don't clear an upgrade on the outbound, I might even take us off the miles + copay list and just buy the needed 500 mile certs (I would need to buy 11 of them),

Here’s a question - does already being on a waitlist effect your ability to request an upgrade to be processed manually? My situation:
bought a ticket in Economy plus, but no C-ups were available at the time, so I requested to be put on the wait list
set an upgrade alert on EF
got an alert saying there was upgrade availability, so called AA
AAgent said she didn’t handle upgrades, and had to wait until they went through waitlist
Just wonder if I’m better off setting a seat alert, NOT putting myself on waitlist, then calling when I get EF alert and just do manually?

Some agents will not process an upgrade request if you're already on the waitlist, others will.
Whenever I've had an agent refuse, I respond with something like "So if I just bought the ticket now you could process the upgrade, but because I bought it weeks ago you can't. That doesn't make any sense!". The agents don't have a good response and on more than one occasion I've had them change course and put it through.
In any event it's still best to get on the waitlist and not rely solely on EF alerts and calling in. I've had plenty clear straight off the waitlist. It's all timing, there's an equal chance AA could release C space and clear you in between EF sweeps, in which case you'd never receive an alert.

Yea, this has been an issue for years, HUCA as mentioned above.

Hi all, I have a RDU-CLT-HNL flight I booked months ago that I was able to upgrade using 15K miles + $170 copay on both segments. I remember the agent confirming upgrade space was available on both segments and so I selected first class class seats on both. I can see those seats on the app and am able to switch to other first class seats. However, I noticed on the app that only the RDU-CLT segment is confirmed while the CLT-HNL segment is requested.
Is this expected? Is my upgrade not confirmed even though I have a first class seat selected?
If it’s not confirmed, I doubt this will clear as it’s a July 4th weekend Hawaii flight. This would be a huge waste of miles/cost to only have an upgrade on a 50 minute regional flight. Based on AA policies, it looks like I’m SOL on getting a refund of the copay. Am I missing something?

When you confirmed the upgrade months ago you should have received an email confirmation as well. I'm guessing this is just an issue with the app and not that your upgrade is somehow not confirmed now.

What does your reservation look like when you check it online (not in the app)?

I don't know about the app since I don't use a cell phone.
But, on my AA reservations online, just about every time I do mileage upgrades (which is every time we fly, at least 3 or 4 times a year) it still shows as "Requested" for each segment.
Scroll all the way down to the bottom, under your flights, under your meal selections, etc. Sometimes, the segments that have been confirmed will show as "Confirmed". But, lately at least, they just all stay as "Requested". My First/Business seat selections are still displayed next to my flight segments. And, I have never had a problem at the airports for those "Requested" flights; we always get our First/Bus seats that we had originally selected.
Oh, and I've never seen "Waitlisted" anywhere on an AA rez online. I guess that's where the "Requested" comes into play (even if they are Confirmed......).

So, if I get an upgrade confirmed in advance, in which situations are the miles and copay refundable?
Also, are you sure it applies to three segments, I thought it only applied to one. So, if you have an international segment and two domestic, assuming the international is available, it applies to all three? What if the domestic legs are on the next day (same itinerary), are they still covered?

Mileage and systemwide upgrades are valid for 3 segments and can even be used with stopovers.

Would an equipment change allow for a refund of the co-pay? I'm still learning about miles and co-pay upgrades and I'm feeling paranoid about the non-refundable part haha...

[Edit] Sounds like I may be incorrect on this answer. Apologies if I created any confusion.

when did this change? Pre covid equipment change for international tickets meant a full refund if requested.
