AA miles awards: using / redeeming AA miles on Qantas (QF)

The basics:
QF releases their awards from 353 days out to QF FF's and some ffp's (Amadeus CRS). So at the 331 days (~Sabre CRS) AA for award release there are scant seats left. They tend to add more much closer to the day of flight, if there are seats available.

2017.07.08 edit by FlyerTalkUserName: For US flights it has been my recent, but limited experience that QF releases award availability around 10-11 months from departure. Consider searching for one seat in F and one in J as well.

Consider alternate cities. E.g. Flights to BNE might be easier to book with AA miles than SYD or MEL, so adding a segment from BNE might give you a trip denied by connecting in SYD. You might have to remind AA reservationists, because they might not consider BNE.

Consider alternate airlines, such as HA from HNL, TN via PPT, FJ via NAN, etc.

N.B. Travel via Honolulu, or Asia (e.g. HKG or NRT), will require two awards.

aa.com occasionally may report "phantom availability" of premium awards on Qantas.

2017.07.08 edit by FlyerTalkUserName: Conversely, aa.com occasionally may not show available Qantas awards. Use BA's search tool, QF's search tool, or service like ExpertFlyer to see availability. Call in to ticket.

It only displays flights where there is a seat in at least one cabin. If there is no availability on the flight in any cabin, then the flight will not be displayed.
The aa.com oneworld and Other Airline Award Chart may be seen here, for required miles and restrictions on connections.

Note: Reservation speculating, or tying up award space to "flip" in (or out of) Coupon Connection will not be tolerated. If you have an "extra" reservation, simply cancel or refund it. This will not be allowed in this forum either.

Qantas Routes
To be updated
SYD to LAX, DFW, HNL and YVR. SYD SFO restart delayed

Notes

During low seasons some routes may not have flights every day.

QF have retired all B747's and sent them to the Mojave desert (July 2020)

So is there only SFO-SYD availability on QF or are there also connections to BNE and MEL?

In late March and early April, weather is best in BNE?

If there are unsold F seats close to departure those are much more likely to be used for points upgrades by QFF OWEs.Mrsdrron is OWE with QF and we have always been successful getting J-F upgrades to the US.

Just booked 2 F MileSaaver tickets for October Madrid to Sydney via LHR and DXB. After trying for weeks and getting phantom inventory , dates suddenly appeared. Also Paris to Syd on BA to LHR and then QF2 as above were available on the 18'th .
USD 252 in taxes.
By comparison QF were AUD 1200 in taxes and fees for the Syd- Europe leg in July...

May be my last hurrah , given the increase in award miles needed from March...

Data Point:
Attempted to book QF SFO -> SYD return in J - Expertflyer shows availability (aa.com does not), AA agent saw it, but was unable to book per others in this thread.

AA agent said to call back in a few days and check. Agent would not allow me to put the itinerary on hold.

Hi All

I just booked QF12 JFK - SYD in J, but when talking to the AA agent and trying to book DFW - SYD in F instead, she said that I couldn't book as it was for Qantas FFs only?

The flight was on the same day (so open to all partners now, not just QFF).

Seemed very strange? Has anyone else experienced this? Should I just ring back until I get an agent that is able to book it for me or am I truly not eligible to fly in F?

Thanks!

i'm guessing all of these are regular aa mile awards and that booking any of these @ saaver rates is non-existant. correct?

Correct - cost me 62,500 + 34.46 AUD for each seat.

It's an old product and not as good as Cathay IMO but to fly JFK - SYD on CX / JAL would be almost twice as much, and take longer.

Food and wine selection in QF J is better than on CX / JAL also, however the service is pretty average compared to CX / JAL.

All a trade off I guess.

I don't know how the QF site aligns to availability shown on AA.com, but you could try calling in...
