Heathrow horror?

In the domestic channel in terminal 1 you must take your shoes off if you ise the machine on the left, if you use the machine on the right you can keep them on. I aksed and they said only some machines are able to take shoes. Does this not seem the stupidist thing. Heathrow is much better than it was, much better than Gatwick and Stansted. Was able to keep laptop in bag which was good. Flying out of SFO on Wednesday I had to take ALL electrical items AND CABLES etc, electric cables, chargers, VOIP etc, everything, this took forever to repack.
