On a recent trip from LAX-MIA in P, a friend and I were told we could not read Playboy on the flight, as AA changed recently "changed their rules". I have discretly read the magazine on numerous other flights (typically in a window seat with a friend next to me) and have never had a problem.

Not wanting to make a scene, I simply put the magazine away, however, after thinking about this, I became a little annoyed. I could have ordered an un-cut "R" rated movie and had any "potentially offensive" material on my movie screen.

Any thoughts?

On an international flight in US Envoy a guy across the plane from me had tucked his Playboy into an airline supplied magazine to "read" it covertly. I thought it was pretty funny at the time ...

Read what you want...but be discreet. If another passenger's delicate sensibilities are offended, I can assure that the one who is going to hear about it is the Flight Attendant. As in: "Oh, Miss? (that's our name..) Miss, would you tell that man to stop reading that porno magazine? I don't think that's appropriate!" This is usually followed by a big glare, as though I lent it to you or something...Seriously, as long as you aren't waving it around and freaking out the kids, I don't have a problem with it, and I don't know policy on this one. I'll try and check... A story I heard that I thought was funny was the gentleman in First who had gotten the Movie "Basic Instinct" from the video cart. He kept rewinding and replaying the now famous "Sharon Stone Police Interview" in the white dress with no "underthings" on...so to speak.

Puritanical U.S. airlines. I've seen these "lads' mags" offered as inflight reading on QF and BA flights. BA even offers the Sun in FC!

That said I had an experience flying on US a year ago when some guy (mercifully by the window and was seperated a seat from him on the aisle) was reading some illustrated/picture book much worse than 'Playboy'.

I could understand if you were right in the aisle in row 18 next to some random, but if you're being discreet it shouldn't be a problem.

What do you think about this? I was in the very back on a redeye from LA to NY last summer when I guess a couple tried to go into the lav together.

FA: "You cannot go in there together."
PAX: "But I need to help her with something."
FA: "No. I'm sorry sir, we do not allow that kind of thing on our planes."

The only thing this woman (the passenger)needed help with was becoming a card carrying member of the MHC - that's for sure. Not that I'm especially looking forward to using the lav after them, but the FA just looked and acted sooooo very disgusted. I just thought she could have handled it better, but then again, what is a FA to do in that situation?

I generally write out a handwritten certificate with the date on it commemorating the event...I actually did that once. We used to have these "First Flight" certificates, and we'd fill them out with our names and the flight number, etc.
I just used one of those, and changed a few words around to include their newly attained MHC status. I guess things like that just don't bother me. I'd prefer that MHC status be attained in the can, as opposed to out in the cabin...now that's something I wouldn't care to deal with, and a few of my friends have had to "break things up" when it got a little too rambunctious. I was on the flight, but in a different cabin. Funny thing was...her boyfriend was on the flight with her, but he was not the "object of her affection"...so to speak.

As a gay man I find this topic interesting.

I often travel with the gay male equivalent of Playboy/Maxim but never read them during a flight.

For those who think Playboy, etc., are appropriate reading material during a flight, I would ask a question: would you be distressed if, sitting next to me, I opened up Blueboy?

The photos and layouts are, in general, the same; the gender of the models is not.

I dunno, I would have been pretty disgusted too and if it happened on a flight when potty-breaks are necessary (i.e. a transcon) I would have freaked out if a couple walked out of the lav as I was about to walk in.

Not to sound snobbish, but that kind of thing shouldn't happen on a "real" airline IMHO...

Is it more disgusting to think of that happening in the lav than to think of what one single person just did in there right before you, simply using the area in the manner in which it was originally intended?
