Refundable ticket, vouchers and gift cards - it really doesn't matter, since the first day orders contain approval for AA to honor all of them (and to continue to refund pre-petition refundable tickets).

AA will continue to honor the gift cards - that's a near certainty.

So until things change, it's business as usual with gift cards.

Great info, thanks. That is absolutely an updated edit though. That bullet absolutely was not there when it was originally posted yesterday morning.

You are right. I guess the amount of inquiries they received regarding the GC subject prompted them to update it.

Thanks to the AA rep in the general bankruptcy thread, who spotted this and issued the correction.

I suspect it was updated once the bankruptcy court approved the first day orders, one of which authorized AA to continue to accept the gift cards.

I decided to take the precaution of getting Costco to refund the one $300 AA GC I had left. Did it yesterday, noonish, at the Oak Brook, IL store where I'd purchased it. No problem at all.

Since I had purchased it with an Amex GC, they gave me a $269.99 Costco GC, which I immediately spent.

And they did still have the same display of the AA GCs for sale per normal.

AA still sells GCs on their site. Why wouldn't Costco then?

The solution is simple (if not a bit annoying), make sure you pay for the ticket with your gift card first, before trying to upgrade it. If you have already had your upgrade confirmed, have the agent remove your upgrade, then you can ticket with the gift card.
Do airport ticket counters accept gift card payments to ticket on-hold itineraries already upgraded with SWU as 236Dakota seems to have done recently, or am I misreading the post?

Costco in Nashville (Nashville West) had the cards today. First time I've seen them there. Julia
