it happens occasionally ... sometimes if you go to a kiosk and redo check-in, it will magically appear

This has nothing to do with AS and should be moved to the approrpriate forum. Hopefully a Mod will do so.
While an air carrier's printer may physically print (or app display) the Pre-Check logo, the process by which a TTP participant is included or excluded on a particular segment is a Homeland (TSA) process. This could have been DL or BA.

This happens to my GF frequently on AS. Her iPhone BP doesn't show PreCheck (doesn't scan with the LLL either), but a BP printed at the kiosk does have PreCheck. This is without any agent intervention to add the KTN.

100%? You were likely overdue random screening.
This morning I showed up at the airport and was about to enter the Pre line when I noticed my online boarding pass did not show my Pre status. It has always shown 100% of the time in the past. Talked to a counter agent and she said that unless I knew the number there was nothing she could do, despite it being in my AS profile. Luckily I am always early “just in case” but others should be aware and double check your boarding pass.

With GE I've been SSSS'd.
Pre happens *most* of the time. But always double check your BP first.

I actually help airlines set up PreCheck.
Your information on your ticket must match, 100%, what is in your Known Traveler Profile.
Depending in the reservation system, these 5 things MUST BE EXACT or the TSA system will not respond with a positive flag for Pre:
1. First Name
2. Last Name
3. Date of Birth
4. Gender
5. KTN/Redress
Ive seen in some systems where #4 may not make it in the data string, or a spelling error.
If you travel with a middle name, how the res system handles it may also affect things.
The data sent to TSA isnt the same as your name field in your reservation, but the DOCS/DOCO field. Systems are meant to also double check those fields match your name field, and also e-ticket. So if any of those are off, you won't get the flag.
I always travel using my middle name, so that helps ensure I get PreCheck. I also haven't "missed" a flag in 2 years, except in 1 instance the airline didnt add in my middle name.
Example:
Reservation John Doe (name on res)
Docs field is DB/05Jan69/M/Doe/Jonathan-1.1 may produce a Precheck flag, but because the booking is done as John, Sabre will reject it.
We see this most common with Concur and other travel systems that didnt quite set up your travel profile correctly.

People also sometimes inadverdently add punctuation or a space to a name OR the system glitches and does it.
One denial is likely random (unless you've just returned from a self-guided tour of Iran and Syria). But, if it happens again, clear out the KTN fields in your profile, save, go back in, reenter the data, and resave. Double check that your names appear in your profile exactly as they appear in your KTN profile, e.g., GE, Pre-Check, Nexus.
Then, there are of course the people who are being denied Pre-Check for a reason and that may be as simple as your name sounding similar to and you having a DOB close to some bad guy.

I had this happen to me as well on my check-in 9/30-10/1 for early AM 10/1 flight. When I tried to re-checkin on my phone it did provide me with the ability to enter the KTN. I don't know if that meant it did not have it. I checked with a counter and the agent was pretty confused about what a KTN was and kept saying the number should begin with TT... I was very frustrated when I found that when I logged into AlaskaAir.com that the KTN in my profile is now obscured. I ended up going to my profile at United to find it. I then populated it when I re-checked in on the app and then the pre-check showed in my app BP and I was back on my way.
As to why it was not there, I have a theory. I think it is possible that this one reservation I booked through the app. Maybe it did not pick up my KTN from my profile or I was prompted for it and didn't notice. Otherwise, every time I book online, I don't have to think about it, the KTN comes in. I checked all future reservations and I think they look good.

We had similar experience. Partners Pre Check not showing up on BP. I would go back and manually add KTN at beginning of check- in page. I did notice at that time that on AS traveler profile and account, gender was always left blank and would have to be added during reservation process. Went back into AS account and re-entered some of traveler info, re-doing gender, birthday etc and then hitting save.
Now, Pre Check comes on the boarding passes. Global Entry was entered last year so perhaps that helped?? It is always a crap shoot, when traveling , what will go wrong.

I had a roundtrip vacation package booked through AS website. Leaving 9/30, returning 2 days later, 10/2. Precheck on the way out, not on the way back. I finally called, and my KTN number was not correct. It was missing one digit. Not sure how it was not missing on the flight down, but was on the flight home? It has never changed, been in my profile for 3 years. Same with my partner. His is hit and miss. I would guess about half the time he gets precheck. Very frustrating.

100% pre using GE. only one error and that was because I miskeyed KTN on United reservation but once I corrected and checked in again it appeared. They always say randomly you don't get it but never seems to be the case. Its always been some sort of data issue. Ive had precheck on same day turns to the middle east and one ways tickets too.
