But is that position on the wait list actually meaningful?

I was able to purchase a pair of upgrades for a 90-minute flight tomorrow, checking in at T-24 with no status. Our coach seats were not bad ones, but the upgrade cost was $52.something per passenger, and we are planning to check somewhere between 1-3 bags total, so it was an easier decision. There was very little upgrade activity at/during the MVP/Gold/75K windows, so my guess is that we didn't "hop the list" -- U was open throughout the days leading up to check-in.

3/24/18 SEA-LAS AS 616 MVPG Upgrade cleared at T-72 hours
(I will almost certainly lose the upgrade in order to fly into LAS ~8 hours earlier though, once I SDC at 10 pm tonight.)

Date April 4th
Route PDX-SEA
Flight Number AS 423
Status MVP
Fare Class G
Date of ticket purchase Feb 23, 2018
Was provided with the option to upgrade when checking in for no cost, so I grabbed it. Sounds like this is an issue with the upgrade system, and I was the beneficiary of it this time around.

AS457 LAX-SEA (1740 departure), Wed 11 Apr ... originally booked on VX1797 at 1940, opted in for MCS but couldn't select an MCS seat at OLCI (~T-22) even though AS website was showing both MCS and F for sale
called at 1615 to SDC to AS445 (1830 departure which had a PC aisle available) but asked about 457 anyway (seat map had only scattered middle seats; the app showed only F for sale, and five unassigned seats) ... agent confirmed it and said he would skip assigning a seat because the upgrade was probably going to clear in the next 10 min or so

4/9/18 SEA-BOI AS 590 MVPG Upgrade cleared at T-72 hours on W class partner redemption
SEA-BOI-PHX (BOI-PHX on AA)
There's a surprising amount of last-minute saver award inventory on BOI-PHX, so this is how AS makes connections to AA...

4/9 LAX-DCA AS 6 Gold Upgrade cleared at T-12 hours (surprising)
4/11 DCA-DAL AS 33?? Gold Upgrade cleared at T-24 hours, but.... I changed to AS 3333 at 10PM and lost the upgrade. Was 1st on the list for 3333 as well but it went out full and I was in premium instead.
While I was in DAL connecting I checked monitors and it seems like the UG lists are pretty thin. Food for thought if you're headed into DC or NY from the west coast...
