That's what I'm looking in to at the moment. I have enough booked through July of next year already to hit BA Silver; if banked on Marco Polo, barely enough to hit their Silver. But if I collect the miles on AS, I am almost to Gold75k again.
The JL and EK redemptions for my annual flights back home to the States for visits are great (especially the former: 130,000 R/T BKK-NRT-JFK in J). I also plan on returning to the States in a few years, so I don't mind banking the miles on AS.

With the conclusion of the AF/KLM partnership, it would sure be nice to have a partner that gets us to Europe without the exorbitant fees. AA will get me to their destinations, but once there the AS rules prevent making any connections. Are they expecting Condor to be a suitable alternative? Their J product looks to be a step up from Iceland Air, but still a generation or two behind. This is all regarding award flight availability.

There are more ways to get miles than just flying. Note that I said “collecting”.

Would the addition of thomas cook under the Condor umbrella replace some of the AF/KLM?

Condor's Business Class lie-flat seating is actually not half bad and I was pleasantly surprised with the product. However finding award space for Condor Business seems near impossible. Plenty of Premium Economy at 45,000 one-way which is a terrible use of miles for what is essentially a regular econo seat with more legroom, when you consider that Business flat beds are just 10k more (if you can ever find any).

Waited until a couple of weeks ago to see if AY would be bookable "later this fall", but ended up booking a milk-run itinerary on AS/AA to Europe for next spring. Still have about 6 weeks to change for free if AY should end up opening up for award booking and have space for my date range.

I guess we will have to wait until next fall for AY redemption?

I'm not optimistic. This is starting to get annoying.

See you (AY award flights) in 9 months, or in 21 months... who knows.

Would be a lot easier to just have the announcement say "some day we may offer awards with AY".

“This” refers to a year. “This” year (2017, the one we’re in now) already had a fall. So that statement won’t be true again until 2018, if we’re going to be excessively pedantic, as one does on FlyerTalk.
