It would make sense to start collecting other mileage currencies. BA Avios on for CX would be 7.5k each way in in Y, 15k in J (and BA will let you buy half the Avios at about 2 cpm US). A *A plan like TG, DW or even AV might be a way to go as well. AS MP is not really meant to be used by customers based outside the US.
The JL and EK redemptions for my annual flights back home to the States for visits are great (especially the former: 130,000 R/T BKK-NRT-JFK in J). I also plan on returning to the States in a few years, so I don't mind banking the miles on AS.

With the conclusion of the AF/KLM partnership, it would sure be nice to have a partner that gets us to Europe without the exorbitant fees. AA will get me to their destinations, but once there the AS rules prevent making any connections. Are they expecting Condor to be a suitable alternative? Their J product looks to be a step up from Iceland Air, but still a generation or two behind. This is all regarding award flight availability.

That's what I'm looking in to at the moment. I have enough booked through July of next year already to hit BA Silver; if banked on Marco Polo, barely enough to hit their Silver. But if I collect the miles on AS, I am almost to Gold75k again.

Waited until a couple of weeks ago to see if AY would be bookable "later this fall", but ended up booking a milk-run itinerary on AS/AA to Europe for next spring. Still have about 6 weeks to change for free if AY should end up opening up for award booking and have space for my date range.
