To try to make sense of what's all happening between AS and DL, the idea arose during the recent Alaska do to create a compendium in the wiki of the various stages of the current spat. Please add your knowledge where you can!

Not a rumor any more --- here's the language from their Terms & Conditions for the temporary (through 3/31/15) program:

Terms & Conditions

Eligibility: 20-minute Bag-to-Claim Guarantee bonus-mile offer valid on travel between February 19, 2015 through March 31, 2015. Offer valid on all domestic flights within the U.S. 50 and Puerto Rico, marketed and operated by Delta Air Lines. Itineraries that include Delta Connection and codeshare flights are eligible as long as the final leg is marketed and operated by Delta Air Lines.Customers must be a SkyMiles member in good standing at the time of travel and award of bonus miles to be eligible and must submit a request form with Delta upon completion of travel. Requests must be submitted via delta.com/BagsOnTime within three days of flight's arrival. All claims must be submitted by April 3, 2015. Limit one request per passenger per outbound or return travel regardless of number of checked bags; requests for multiple trips must be submitted separately. Time to baggage claim will be as measured by Delta's baggage tracking system, where available; lost, mishandled, and damaged bags are excluded. Oversize and overweight baggage and special items are not eligible.

Offer: Earn a one-time, 2,500-mile bonus per baggage delay occurrence. Bonus miles do not count toward Medallion® qualification or Million Miler™ status.

Promotional Fulfillment: Bonus miles will appear on member's SkyMiles statement. Allow up to two weeks after registration for credit to appear.

Miscellaneous: Offer only valid on paid tickets for published fares; not valid for those traveling on employee pass privileges or employees of other airlines traveling on industry discounted tickets. Delta Air Lines reserves the right to suspend this baggage service guarantee at any time and without prior notice in the event of an airport baggage system malfunction, severe weather, or other conditions out of Delta's control that would prevent timely baggage delivery. Delta reserves the right to deny fraudulent, suspicious or ineligible claims. All SkyMiles program rules apply to SkyMiles program membership, miles, offers, mile accrual, mile redemption, and travel benefits. To review the rules, please visit Membership Guide & Program Rules. Other restrictions may apply. Offers and benefits are subject to change without notice.

How much would anyone care to wager that the Delta program folds quickly? They'll be giving out SkyPesos like crazy.

And with the new SkyMiles program, 2,500 miles is quite lucrative -- a lot more than you get for many trips themselves.

Yes, DL will be handing them out like candy. I've waited well over 20 minutes for DL on several occasions.

The processing seems nicer, though. Since DL has all scans online, they can easily tell from the back office if it is a valid claim.

Longtime AS customer decides to try DL because of the offers, etc., but doesn't want to yet jump the MP ship and join SM until he's been able to test the goods.

Bag shows up late. He doesn't get anything for it. Potential for goodwill and a new long term customer blown.

AS gives out the goodwill in the reverse situation, and makes (or at least doesn't lose) $ in the equation, because you have to buy another ticket to redeem the goodwill.

And Alaska introduced the baggage guarantee when they added the first check bag fee, with the voucher equal to the bag fee. So if the bag isn't delivered in 20 minutes (and you'll fly Alaska again in the next year), no net bag fee.

Let's look at some of the highlights of this new "perk"

Eligibility: 20-minute Bag-to-Claim Guarantee bonus-mile offer valid on travel between February 19, 2015 through March 31, 2015. Roughly a 6 week period. AS guarantee doesn't have an expiration date.

Offer valid on all domestic flights within the U.S. 50 and Puerto Rico, marketed and operated by Delta Air Lines. Itineraries that include Delta Connection and codeshare flights are eligible as long as the final leg is marketed and operated by Delta Air Lines. Alaska applies their offer to Flights from Mexico and Canada as well.

Customers must be a SkyMiles member in good standing at the time of travel and award of bonus miles to be eligible Not required for the AS guarantee.

and must submit a request form with Delta upon completion of travel. Requests must be submitted via delta.com/BagsOnTime within three days of flight's arrival. All claims must be submitted by April 3, 2015. Limit one request per passenger per outbound or return travel regardless of number of checked bags; requests for multiple trips must be submitted separately. Time to baggage claim will be as measured by Delta's baggage tracking system, where available; As opposed to just seeing the baggage agent for your voucher number which you can upload onto the AS system yourself.
lost, mishandled, and damaged bags are excluded. Oversize and overweight baggage and special items are not eligible. Hopefully this is because you're going to get more than 2,500 sky pesos, when your bag is lost, but .

- - -
So for 6 weeks only, you can go on line to claim sky pesos when your bag is late. What happens after the end of March? Doesn't seem like they really wanted to offer this, but felt they had to.

Being required to submit the request to DL online would allow Delta to just reply with a stupid scripted e-mail somehow saying that you're not going to be eligible for some reason or another...

Yeah was wondering how that would fly

About a year ago, my son flew DL to Santiago, Chile. His bags went to Salt Lake City. Yes, the airports have similar codes. Trying to get compensation out DL was a big hassle.

Especially since the T&Cs don't outline when the clock starts( when the seat belt signs come off, or when the last passenger gets off) or when the clock ends (when the first bag arrives, or when your bag in particular arrives), so as long as DL uses their typical non-specific language they can pretty much get away with anything and not give anyone the miles barring a huge delay

So for 6 weeks only, you can go on line to claim sky pesos when your bag is late. What happens after the end of March? Doesn't seem like they really wanted to offer this, but felt they had to.
Conbine this with the fact that AS actually empowers their agents to provide compensation (plus I've had agents use the bag guarantee certs as mea culpa certs in other situations), and what you have is DL matching what they think is on paper and have no idea how it's actually executed.

Over/under on when the first "I didn't get my 2,500 miles for my late bag!" thread will appear on the DL forum?
