Auckland Airport says net profit and passengers down

Auckland International Airport today reported a lower net profit in the September quarter, with aircraft and passenger numbers down on a year ago.

Net profit after tax for the three months to September fell to $24.2 million from $24.9m for the year ago period....

North Shore Council joins Whenuapai group

North Shore City Council will take up the offer of Waitakere City and Infratil to enter a shareholders' agreement for a company to develop, operate and manage an airport at Whenuapai Air Base.

Air NZ predicts bigger profit

Air New Zealand says it is on track to beat last year's $96 million profit but analysts are sceptical about the airline's forecast....

Airport looks to Asia for more passengers

Auckland International Airport's net profit is expected to remain flat this year, but the company is promising improved earnings thanks to the growth of new markets such as India and China.

Revenue was up 8.3 per cent, at $77.1 million, for the three months to September, with trading profit (before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) also up 8 per cent, at $60.8 million....

Northern Winter 2006 Schedule Changes

Air New Zealand would like to advise the international schedule changes for Northern Winter 2006 (29 October 2006 24 March 2007). A summary of these changes are outlined below.

TASMAN
The Trans Tasman frequencies that remain unchanged from NS06 (current) schedule include:
Thirty-four services per week Auckland to Sydney operated by 744, 777, 767 and A320 aircraft.
Fourteen weekly 744 and A320 services Auckland to Melbourne
Three weekly A320 services Auckland to Adelaide
Three weekly A320 services Auckland to Cairns
Twelve weekly A320 services Wellington to Sydney
Seven weekly A320 services Wellington to Melbourne
Double daily A320 services Christchurch to Sydney
Two weekly A320 services Queenstown to Sydney

Increase in frequency Auckland to Perth
Six weekly 763 services Auckland to Perth. An additional daily flight will operate between 29 October - 06 November, 29 November 2006 and 05 February 2007.

Decrease in frequency Auckland to Brisbane
Auckland to Brisbane services will reduce from 18 services per week to 14 weekly services operated by 747, 777 and A320 aircraft.

Increase in frequency Christchurch to Melbourne
Christchurch to Melbourne services will increase from 8 services per week to 10 weekly services operated by A320 aircraft.

Decrease in frequency Christchurch to Brisbane
Christchurch to Brisbane services will reduce from 9 services per week to 7 weekly services operated by 737 and A320 aircraft.

Decrease in frequency Wellington to Brisbane
Wellington to Brisbane services will reduce from 7 services per week to 5 weekly services operated by A320 aircraft.

PACIFIC ISLANDS
A number of routes remain unchanged. These include:
Two services per week between Auckland and Norfolk Island and Auckland and Noumea
Three services per week between Rarotonga and Tahiti, Nadi and Los Angeles and Tahiti and Los Angeles.
A weekly service between Auckland and Niue, Christchurch and Rarotonga, Nadi and Rarotonga, Tonga and Apia, Apia and Los Angeles, Auckland and Papeete.
Six services per week between Auckland and Tonga
Nine services per week between Auckland and Rarotonga

Increase in services between Auckland and Apia
Services between Auckland and Apia will increase from 4 to 5 services per week. These flights will be operated by 3 x 767-300's and 2 x A320 aircraft.

Seasonal change in services between Auckland and Nadi
Services between Auckland and Nadi will decrease from 10 flights to 9 per week. All flights will be operated by a mixture of 767-300's, A320s, and 737-300 aircraft.

New service between Auckland and Vanuatu
A weekly service between Auckland and Port Vila will operate between 29 Oct - 28 Jan 07. This flight will be operated by an A320 aircraft.

LONG HAUL
Some of the long-haul routes remain unchanged. These include:
Daily service to London via Los Angeles is maintained and will be operated by a 777-200 aircraft
Daily service to San Francisco is maintained and will be operated by a 777-200 aircraft 5 times per week with the Thursday and Saturday service remaining a 747-400 until 20 Jan then reverts to a daily 777-200.
Double daily services to Los Angeles are maintained and will be operated by a mixture of 777-200 and 747-400 aircraft. An additional 777-200 will operate on Wednesday and Sunday between 17 Dec - 17 Jan.
Daily service to Tokyo is maintained and will be operated by a 777-200 aircraft.
5 services per week Auckland - Osaka is maintained and will be operated by a 777-200 aircraft.
3 services per week Nadi - Los Angeles are maintained.
3 services per week Rarotonga - Tahiti - Los Angeles are maintained.
1 service per week Tonga - Samoa - Los Angeles is maintained.

New Routes and schedule changes include:
Auckland - Hong Kong services increase to daily from 28 October which will be operated by a 747-400 aircraft.
Introduction of a daily service Hong Kong - London from 28 October which will be operated by a 747-400 aircraft.
Introduction of 3 services per week Auckland - Shanghai from 06 November which will be operated by a 777-200 aircraft.
2 services per week to Hawaii with an additional Thursday service operating between 14 Dec 17 Jan.

Airlines agree on LA code share

AIR New Zealand has announced that subject to government approval, it will operate a code share arrangement with Air Pacific to provide a joint, daily flight between Fiji and Los Angeles.

If approved, the service would become effective from April 2, 2007.

A statement yesterday said this would result in Air New Zealand changing its Los Angeles schedule from the current Thursday, Saturday and Monday departures to Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The route would be serviced by the B767-300 and B777-200ER aircraft....

Concern over Engine Centre's future

The future of Christchurch's Engine Centre is understood to be in doubt following a staff and management meeting this morning.

Our newsroom understands staff were told of financial troubles at the Engine Centre which employs around 400 staff.

The company is jointly operated by Air New Zealand and US-based aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt and Whitney....

NZ passports okay for US travel

New Zealanders can continue to spend up to 90 days in America without a visa, as recently introduced microchipped passports meet new visa waiver requirements, the Internal Affairs Department says.

From yesterday, the US requires newly issued passports to carry a microchip that contains the holder's photograph and other digitised data.

Older passports that are machine-readable also meet the requirements.

Councils push for LCCs for Whenuapai

NZ Herald

The prospect of budget airlines sharing Whenuapai Air Base with military aircraft got a boost with three councils becoming part of an airport development company.

Previously reluctant Defence officials also have agreed to discuss joint use.

Jobs a focal point of Air NZ meeting

Air New Zealand expects this year's before tax profit will exceed last year's profit of $150 million, as long as the current jet fuel prices and trading conditions persist.

The forecast came from the airline's annual meeting in Auckland yesterday, where it also announced that it had entered into a 58-day consultation period with staff from its airport services division.

The talks is aimed at allowing workers to search for options for retaining their jobs....

Air NZ's new around the world route taking off

The All Blacks will be on board as Air New Zealand launches its new around the world route to London.

The airline begins flying to the British capital via Hong Kong tonight, in addition to the existing daily run via Los Angeles.

Save our jobs, say Unions to Government

Senior Government ministers are under intense union pressure to stop Air New Zealand contracting out jobs.

The politicians were told at the Labour Party conference in Rotorua at the weekend that they should buy all remaining shares in the airline, if necessary, so they could exert greater control over it.

Prime Minister Helen Clark met affected unions on Saturday night about the latest Air NZ proposals to contract out jobs - this time the work of 1700 counter staff and baggage handlers....

Government not stepping into Air NZ dispute, PM says

It is up to unions and Air New Zealand to sort out a dispute over the possible contracting out of 1700 ground staff jobs, Prime Minister Helen Clark says.

Air NZ is seeking to cut costs and has proposed doing that by getting other companies to handle jobs such as baggage handling and check in counters....

NZ carrier tries codeshare deals

Air New Zealand will replace some of its Pacific services with codeshare deals as it continues to seek cost reductions through job cuts and route rationalisation.

The move is part of strategy aimed at boosting revenue or lowering costs on marginal or unprofitable routes.

The strategy includes a proposal to join forces with Qantas across the Tasman in attempt to stop the competitive bloodbath on the route....
