Air NZ to outsource jobs to Fiji

Air New Zealand has confirmed about seventy finance department clerical workers' jobs will be outsourced to Fiji.

An Air NZ spokeswoman said workers who were affected by the decision were told about two weeks ago, through an internal-only announcement.

About 70 clerical jobs in Air NZ's finance business area, now called Financial Shared Services, will go offshore to Fiji from January 2007....

Press Release: Service And Food Workers Union

Air New Zealand management have decided to go ahead with the proposal to outsource most of its finance department clerical work to Fiji.

About 70 clerical jobs in Air NZ's finance business area, now called Financial Shared Services, are to go offshore to Fiji from January 2007 where the company can source low-cost labour.

The union representing the finance workers says members have been in a constant state of consultation and restructuring for years, and they have become demoralised by the lack of response from the company to their endless submissions.

Service and Food Workers Union regional secretary Jill Ovens says Air NZ management bombards employees with requests for their comments and feedback, but then the company pursues a single - minded "vision" in spite of what employees submit.

"Air NZ corporate management is driven by ideology. The focus is to secure a low-paid workforce who are passive and compliant. If the outsourcing is a failure, it will be a huge cost to the company. But they will have succeeded in de - unionising a whole section of their workforce, so they probably think it is worth the risk."

Ms Ovens says it is likely that more jobs in Finance will go over the next 18 months due to further restructuring. The jobs that will be left will be mostly managerial positions related to the management of the contract with the outsource provider.

"We, the public, are the majority shareholders in Air NZ through the Government's 80% shareholding. If corporate management get what they want, then our national airline will soon consist of a group of well - paid corporate managers whose job will be to manage third-party contractors.

The company will also be announcing its decision next week [subs note: Monday 2nd October] on whether it will be contracting out the Air New Zealand ground - staff at airports. If this contracting out goes ahead, this will mean more than a thousand jobs will be shed by the company to contractors who will be looking to make a profit out of cutting the wages and conditions of ground-staff employees.

The SFWU says there is no pressing reason to reduce staffing costs. Air NZ announced a net profit of $96 million last month. The chairman of the Board, John Palmer, was reported as saying that the profit was "a respectable result when measured against the operational environment for airlines generally". Air NZ has purchased new aircraft and is expanding its long-haul destinations.

"There is no crisis in Air NZ," Ms Ovens says.

At the same time as the profit announcement was made, Chief Executive Rob Fyfe was reported as saying that the airline was not looking at further personnel reductions to cut costs.

I'd wager the investigations concerning Air Cargo Price Fixing have finally made it to New Zealand. Several airlines are under investigation for colluding in setting prices by using a common fuel surcharge formula.

btw does anone here know the rego of the Air NZ 747 that currently serves the round the world AKL-MEL-PVG-FRA-ORD-HNL-AKL route?

You mean the freighter service? That is operated by Atlas Air.

That's the one. A 747-400F, around the world, AKL-MEL-PVG-FRA-ORD-HNL-AKL, twice weekly with Air NZ flight numbers.

If Air NZ are leasing from Atlas then it's an N-registered aircraft in a wet lease, correct? Too bad, since a 747 in NZ livery would make for an interesting photo at Baku or ORD.

Back to the original topic -- I've since heard more that reinforces the impression the raid on the Air NZ offices has to do with the cargo price fixing investigations.

Southerlies continue to disrupt flights at Wellington airport

Operations are still disrupted at Wellington airport with gale force southerlies preventing many flights from landing.

Air New Zealand says it has again suspended check-ins for domestic flights and passengers are either waiting at the airport for their flights to be rescheduled or have gone home.

International flights are departing on schedule.

Pilots are still trying to land in the gale force southerlies. An airport spokesperson says airlines are advising their pilots to try to land in the wintry conditions and he says about half of them are succeeding.

Air NZ picks up power as fuel falls

Air New Zealand shares hit a 15-month high yesterday as the price of oil continued to fall but the airline says that does not mean it will be dropping ticket prices any time soon.

Crude oil prices have fallen to a seven-month low (below US$59 a barrel) since August, driving a 20 per cent fall in the price of jet fuel since the high of US$93.

Chief financial officer Rob McDonald said yesterday the drop was "a welcome respite" but the price had not come back far enough and was still highly volatile....

NZ worth the 12 hour flight

A unique new advertising campaign promoting New Zealand is being launched in southern California.

Tourism New Zealand and Air New Zealand are pushing the message that it is just a 12 hour flight from Los Angeles to Auckland. But the task will not be easy, given LA is already saturated with billboards advertising almost anything....

Waivers support code-share proposal

Air New Zealand moved a step closer to complying with regulatory requirements for its code share with Qantas on trans-Tasman flights.

NZX ruled Qantas was not a related party of Air NZ, despite the existence of strategic alliance agreements and convertible notes issued to Qantas Investments (NZ) Ltd (now equal to 4.2% of Air NZ worth $NZ98.2 million) from an earlier failed merger attempt.

NZX also exempted Air NZ from shareholder approval before the convertible notes can be redeemed by Qantas as shares.

Media Release - Air NZ gets in behind the London Film Festival

Air New Zealand celebrates being one of the New Zealand film industrys highest flying fans with its sponsorship of The Times BFI 50th London Film Festival, and the Gala screening of the New Zealand film, No 2, on Saturday, 21st October 2006.

An avid supporter of the New Zealand film scene, Air New Zealand has had a strong association with the film industry, covering its aircraft with images of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy several years ago, and more recently, taking on naming rights sponsorship of the annual Air New Zealand Screen Awards.

Scott Carr, Air New Zealand General Manager UK & Europe said the airline was delighted to be involved with The Times BFI 50th London Film Festival and associated with the highly acclaimed New Zealand film No 2.

No 2 scooped four awards at this years Air New Zealand Screen Awards: Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Original Music so to now have a role in helping to bring this great Kiwi film to London is the icing on the cake for us.

With newly upgraded aircraft featuring on-demand digital entertainment system and a second daily service to London launching at the end of the month, weve never been more capable and committed to promoting the creative talents of our film and television industry, he said.

No 2, written and directed by award-winning playwright Toa Fraser, is infused with the heat and vibrancy of the South Pacific. It is a big-hearted, exuberant film about what it takes to bring family together and tells the story of Nanna Maria, who, inspired by a dream of her childhood back in Fiji, demands that her grandchildren put on a feast at which she will name her successor.

With daily flights to entertainment hotspots like London, Los Angeles and Hong Kong, Air New Zealand is fast becoming the airline of choice for film lovers.

Peter Jacksons Lord of the Rings, Whalerider and The Worlds Fastest Indian are a few of the impressive line up of films passengers can enjoy at 30,000ft. The airlines state-of-the-art personal entertainment system makes Air New Zealand the ultimate cinema in the sky.

Airport tax on travellers is a rip off

Air New Zealand today labelled Hamilton Airport's proposed $5 domestic passenger levy as a rip off for travellers and a convenient way to balance the books.

"This is nothing more than a toll on passengers - the proposal is totally unjustified and simply a convenient way to fund expensive cosmetic changes to the Airport terminal," said Norm Thompson, Group General Manager, Short haul Airlines.

"It appears that Hamilton is seeking to become part of a growing trend amongst New Zealand airports to use the travelling public to pay for development that is speculative and largely unnecessary to their travel. We are even seeing some regional airports determined to have jet capable runways when the likelihood of jet aircraft flying into the area is limited at best.

"Air New Zealand is not against Airport development - this is a matter for the local community to decide. However, today's passengers shouldn't have to pay for anything more than they need and certainly shouldn't be paying for any speculative investment by the owners of airports. As with any business, that activity must be funded by those seeking to speculate.

"As the major supplier of air services to Hamilton and the Airport's major customer, we strongly oppose a toll on our customers to pay for such grandiose and unnecessary development, particularly given Air New Zealand's commitment to keeping domestic fares low," said Mr Thompson.

"An extra $5 on a $70 airfare, in other words a 7% increase, is not insignificant and may well deter some families from travelling by air."

Mr Thompson said that Air New Zealand regularly receives complaints from customers about the departing passenger levy charged by Rotorua and Palmerston North Airports. "The survey of Hamilton Airport customers is flawed and was undertaken after the terminal development started, not before," he said.

Air New Zealand has been in discussions with Waikato Regional Airport Limited during the last two years, during which time the airline has repeatedly stated its opposition to the terminal development and sought clarity from the WRAL Board over how the project would be funded and how the costs would be recovered.

Air New Zealand is also currently engaged in discussions with Auckland and Wellington Airports over proposed charges related to terminal development.
