Direct flights boost Wairarapa's wine tourism

Auckland is now just a short flight away from the Wairarapa's world-class wineries, thanks to the launch of a new Air New Zealand route.

The direct service between Masterton and Auckland operates six days a week, with fares from $105 one way per person.

Previously travellers had to fly into or out of Wellington or Palmerston North and make their way by road to the Wairarapa....

Delay leaves pilots flying blind

An Air New Zealand pilot is concerned "massive systems failures" in the Airbus which crashed near Perpignan could be putting other pilots and passengers at risk.

The airline has warned pilots not to speak, but several have concerns about a series of failures that appear to have helped cause the A320 to crash off the French coast in November.

One A320 pilot said he and colleagues around the world considered the French interim report a whitewash and believed too little progress had been made in the investigation....

Press Release - Air NZ to fly Tailored Arrival demonstration in LA

Air New Zealand will fly a demonstration Tailored Arrival into Los Angeles International Airport tomorrow morning as part of a trial to prove the viability of the procedure into one of the world’s busiest airports.

The trial into Los Angeles follows the success of a Tailored Arrivals initiative into San Francisco Airport, in which Air New Zealand has been participating since January 2008.

NZ2, operated by a Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, will complete the Tailored Arrival at 11am Tuesday NZT (3pm Monday PDT), air traffic and weather conditions permitting.

The aircraft will be captained by Captain Mark Shepherd, a Boeing 777-200ER Captain and Air New Zealand Air Traffic Management specialist, who is playing a key role in managing the project.

Tailored Arrival procedures allow aircraft to make full use of interlinked onboard and ground technology to descend to the airport, with minimal direct Air Traffic Control intervention. The procedure is approximately 30 miles shorter than the conventional arrival, allowing a more optimal descent.

Air New Zealand Chief Pilot Captain David Morgan said the airline stood to make significant fuel and emission savings from the potential introduction of Tailored Arrivals operations into Los Angeles.

Captain Morgan said, when fully implemented, the introduction of the Tailored Arrivals procedure at Los Angeles was expected to realise annualised savings for Air New Zealand of more than 600,000 litres of fuel and 1500 tonnes of CO2.

“Given we operate 747s and 777s on 14 flights per week into Los Angeles from New Zealand the potential fuel savings are substantial. The results we have already achieved at San Francisco demonstrate the very real difference that efficient, highly automated Air Traffic Control systems can make to airline operations.”

Air New Zealand was the first international carrier invited to join the San Francisco Oceanic Tailored Arrivals Trial, a joint venture between Boeing, NASA, the FAA and San Francisco Airport.

Captain Morgan said Air New Zealand’s participation on the Tailored Arrival initiatives are part of the airline’s commitment to reducing the amount of carbon emitted from its operations. He said tomorrow’s initiative was made possible by the close historical relationship between Air New Zealand, NASA, Boeing and the FAA.

Kiwis keep travelling despite recession

The recession is deepening, the dollar is falling but there is one thing it appears we are not yet prepared to give up, travel.

But despite being tempted with picture postcard images, people are thinking twice before splashing out....

From Stuff
Air Commodore Gavin Howse said a deal with Air New Zealand could see pilots flying an airliner one day and putting on a flight suit the next. Newly trained pilots already are being released to Air New Zealand for a two-year secondment that sees the air force pay their wages
A useful tax payer subsidy for Air NZ.

Huh? I thought Air NZ had an oversupply of pilots at the moment due to capacity cutbacks.

Air NZ's $76m crash cash

Air New Zealand has received a $76 million payout after the Airbus tragedy in France - but families of the New Zealand victims are likely to wait much longer to find out how much compensation they will receive.

Whatever the amount, it is unlikely to approach the multi-million-dollar settlements traditionally awarded by American courts after air crashes....

David Stone: Borderless Tasman still far away

A common border for Australia and New Zealand - with travel between the two countries treated as domestic, as in Europe - has again been mooted. But as welcome as that would be, there are too many obstacles for it to happen any time soon.

So attention has shifted to the simpler procedure of pre-clearance, under which travellers would undergo all customs, immigration, biosecurity and physical security checks before departure across the Tasman, and then enter freely on arrival. But this will also require negotiating through a minefield....

Air New Zealand's mPass facility 'proving popular'

The new mPass travel technology option launched by Air New Zealand is proving a big hit with passengers, the airline has claimed.

Users of iPhones can download the mPass application and use it to have boarding passes sent to their phone or view up-to-date details regarding flight bookings.

The facility also removes the need for paper tickets as passengers can receive an electronic barcode that is scanned at kiosks or departure gates if they only have carry-on luggage.

Air New Zealand reported that more than 1,500 passengers have already made use of the mPass, which has become the number one download in the travel category since it was made available on the Apple Store website last month....

But does Air NZ have an oversupply of pilots paid for by someone else might be what matters here.
