NZ headquarters shift next month
NZ Herald
NZ Herald
About 1000 Air New Zealand staff are about to shift into their new $60 million international headquarters near Westhaven in Auckland.
The new building's interior is being fitted out and by later next month the airline will become a tenant of the $1 billion NZX-listed Macquarie Goodman Property Trust, established by New Zealand's Goodman family, whose heirs now live in Sydney.
From late September to early October, the airline will move staff from four buildings around the Auckland CBD - including five floors of AMP NZ Office Trust's Quay Tower on the corner of Customs St West and Albert St, the nearby Downtown House, a data centre on the outskirts of the CBD - and the airport.

Qantas, Air NZ on hold over Tasman
THE Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is expected to deliver a draft determination within two weeks on the Qantas-Air New Zealand plan to co-ordinate services across the Tasman.
Its ruling will be keenly watched in New Zealand where the Government, rather than the watchdog, must give the green light to a deal involving a company in which it is the major shareholder....

No early successor to Origin expected to arise
An aviation analyst says the collapse of Origin Pacific last week highlights the current difficulties faced by many airlines - and it could be some time before any new challenger to Air New Zealand emerges.
Goldman Sachs JB Were head of research, Peter Sigley, says high fuel prices are going to make it tough for any new regional airline to get off the ground for the indefinite future....

Ticket talks break down between Origin and Air NZ
...A significant shareholder in the failed airline, Christchurch businessman Mike Pero, says he is disappointed at being frozen out of the process to rescue the company's freight business.
The 25% Origin Pacific shareholder, and one of the airline's main creditors told the company on Friday he was keen to buy its profitable freight business, after the ending of passenger flights.
However, he has since discovered that the airline had given exclusive rights to carry out due diligence to another party, believed to be listed logistics firm, Freightways.
Considering the amount of money he has invested in the company, Mr Pero says he is shocked at the way he has been treated. Freightways has refused to comment.

Govt airport sell-off hopes raised
The Government is looking at selling its stake in Hawke's Bay Airport, which could enable the main runway to be extended.
A longer runway would make it possible for airlines to use jet planes at the airport, just north of Napier.
The Government, which owns 50 per cent of the airport, has been reluctant to spend money to develop it....

Bird strike forces plane return
All Queenstown-based emergency services were on standby after a bird flew into an Air New Zealand Boeing 737 engine on take-off yesterday.
The pilot of the Auckland-bound plane immediately turned it around and safely returned the 113 passengers to Queenstown, Air New Zealand spokesman David Jamieson said. Passengers reported feeling a strange vibration as the plane took off, about 3.15pm, noticed a burning smell and then were told by the captain about the bird strike....

'Hundreds' of Air NZ jobs at risk
Air New Zealand plans to ditch or "redeploy" 160 staff, including moving some finance jobs to Fiji, with union officials saying hundreds more jobs are at risk.
The airline, 80 per cent owned by the Government, has also put out feelers to "outsource" hundreds more ground staff jobs, the unions say, with workers employed by contractors, not the airline directly....
