Earning additional SP on trans tasman if paying to upgrade "Seat Only" to "The Works"
If I booked a "Seat Only" Trans-Tasman fare, if I pay the additional $40 to upgrade to "The Works" when checking in, do I earn additional status points?
If so, looks like a good way to earn SP based on pricing out future flights and the difference if paying when booking:
- more expensive flight: 63SP for the works, 52SP for seat only = 11SP for $40
- cheaper flight: 32SP for the works, 24SP for seat only = 8SP for $40
Thanks for the input experts!

Annoyingly, there is no additional SP/$AP earn if buying a TT Flexi over TT Works. Quite different to domestic flights 🤷♂️

Edited for obvious reasons….
a) Amazing tip - thanks
b) This is the type of loophole that gets shut down when shared online. I was told on another forum that probably does have airline eyes on it that this is the type of info that gets shared in person in meet ups, or shared via private/direct messaging so that those loopholes don't get shut down. You're right. This sounds like something that isn't supposed to happen. So if someone from Air NZ is watching and does feed that back. It's getting shut down.
I don't know if anyone from a relevant department within Air NZ does actually watch this forum. But people know people and things can get passed back eventually to the relevant people and then your loophole is gone.
Unfortunately I don't find FT conducive to encouraging meet ups outside this FT board. I love the idea of it but taking that next step seems like a big jump... for me at least. I have found that joining the QF FB plat group has been good and have pencilled in attending a meet up. But there is no FB group for Air NZ or kiwi travellers. Or its full of infrequent flyers which is ok I don't mind helping out there but sometimes you want to talk to someone with experience. The other Air NZ FB group is a massive complaints group by people who don't read T&Cs or understand much about airlines... actually that's not always true there are some valid complaints in there that Air NZ could improve on. But it's a reasonably biased group. FB would be more fun as there is much more to travel than what we're allowed to discuss on the Air NZ FT board. I'm aware I can go to some other section for tech or hotels etc but it's not the same when you're looking at people post about stuff they have access to in different countries that we don't have easy access to in NZ. Yes you can travel and go get it but ... it's nice to talk with people that have access to the same stuff as you. I've thought about starting up a group but the thought of moderating and dealing with spam bots sounds like a PITA and I definitely couldn't do it on my own. I do have a life outside of this I swear. Anyway... back to usual programming...

As much as I hated flying WLG-AKL-NPL/ROT/TRG return on random weekends just for the SPs, it was a very good earner.
~$800 spend earned 124 SPs, so around $6.45/SP

Ive edited mine which had your quote. I screenshot it first though cause I know Ill forget.
I cant think of any way off the top of my head of how to share info on this board without it being caught by airline eyes. Posting it and deleting it is fine but if someone quotes you then .. theyre in charge of their own post and may not check FT for a while and may not be aware of a request for them to edit the info out so it stays out there for longer for Air NZ to see.

Well intentioned and I get it, however that leaves NZ_Flyer and Nightowl888 who have quoted your post to decide on whether they will edit their posts to delete the info you posted.

Many subsequent discussions ensue about these being ruined by too many people jumping onto the bandwagon and spoiling things.
I think the AirNZ situation where indirect flights with a reversal of direction (eg WLG-AKL-NPL) earned way more SPs but for the same price as the direct flight, were killed by oversharing here on FT.
Who knows whether this would have been tidied up by AirNZ anyway, but certainly sad it has gone.
These days, posting anything about some kind of sweet spot or favourable benefit seems inevitably to lead to it being killed off.

Well, this thread took off more than expected!
I can confirm the original scenario I posted about does work as the calculator; I paid cash on checkin to upgrade to works and earnt SP at (for me) a decent earn rate, regardless of getting a meal and a drink onboard!
