... which illustrates that this issue of compensation is an inexact science. I gather from what Mrs AA told me that some passengers thought the compensation meagre, while others thought it was appropriate. I tend to be in the first camp, but on the other hand was pleased to see AC hand out "funny money" (as YOWkid calls it) rather than AP points.

WOW. I guess I am $40 for the current delay here in YQR. I understand the aircraft has returned to YWG mechanical. I think I have drank $40 so far.....

As far as flight 882, AC didn't follow their own policy (for mechanical delays). http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelin...edflights.html indicates that hotel rooms should have been provided.

This fact was also listed in their Customer Committment, and I haven't seen a press release recinding that at all. I think I still have a copy somewhere.

With 882 being a 2255 departure, and it going mechanical after leaving the fate, it was likely midnight by the time the pax got off the plane. Trying to find hotel rooms at midnight for 198 paxs and arranging the logistics would have been nightmarish at best.

But $100 compensation is low-end. The hotel, transportation, and overtime incurred would have come out to well over that per passenger.

Sort of on the same topic.. on Aug 2, with the AF incident in YYZ, my travel plans got majorly messed, I was travelling from YVR to YYT. Is this still considered 'an act of god'? I found Air Canada to be very rude on arrival in YYZ.. anything (hotel, etc) was denied. Should I demand some compensation for this incident?

I think this is "Act of God". The delays - airport closure - was out of AC control. I don't think they're responsible for providing you with anything.

So you think it's acceptable to be left stranded in YYZ for over 2 days (the next available flight they could book me on to YYT was 4 Aug @ ~10pm) with no luggage, etc?

My wife is still in Paris, but is due back tomorrow night, so I should be able to get a better time line when we have a chance to talk about it.

However, from what she told on the phone, there was a delay pushing back because they had to find another pilot (I'm not sure why). Then they taxied away from the gate, detected the glitch, and taxied back. I don't know when the passengers where deplaned or how long it took them to determine that they weren't going to re-board until 9-ish the next morning, but I do know that my wife called me at 3 am YYZ time to tell me that AC had announced a 9 am departure. It was probably one of those creeping issues of uncertainty involving the length of time to repair the aircraft, crew hours, and then the availability of both a replacement plane and crew. Notwithstanding AC's policy on this kind of thing, getting 200 or so people from the IFT to hotels at 3 am and back in time for a 9 am departure would have been an interesting challenge.

There is a further bit of irony to all of this. My wife and duaghter were both booked in S on that flight. My daughter's flight from YOW to YYZ was cancelled due to the thunderstorms in YYZ that afternoon and evening. When I re-booked her, AC moved her to J on the YUL-CDG flight the next evening.

I gather from their e-mails that they are having a good time in Paris and spending lots of money, despite their getting off on the wrong foot. I'm hoping the AC 883-618 combination goes smoothly tomorrow.

I think someone may have pointed out the point I was about to make. It is a late night departure, and by the time the departure was rescheduled for the morning hotels would have been im-practical. Having been there myself on other flights, I can say there is not much worse than arriving at a hotel at 02h00 and asking for am 04h30 wake up call to be back at the airport for an early morning departing. In the case of AC882 I think it was an 07h00 departure.

In the end, I'm happier to wait for a serviceable aircraft - even on a blanket in the lounge.

Were you on this flight?

Does it really say "DISTRUPTION"? Oh please tell me that is your own typo. I'm not picky or jumping on you (as sometimes happens with the folks here) but I think Air Canada would want to know about the typo.

Thanks,
RTR

AC 882 was re-scheduled for a 9 am departure and left the gate about 9:30 am on the 20th.

I'd have to get another job before I could qualify.

I was just talking to the pair of them and hearing about new boots and new handbags. Glad they're coming home tomorrow.

Sorry I did in fact mistype. "FLIGHT DISRUPTION OVER 3 HRS" is what the message on my account says.

However never got an email or letter from AE on this.

My question is what about the hotel I was forced to spring for which was costly in NYC?
