How to Maximize the J Experience
I will be traveling with my girlfriend to Europe in July and was hoping to get insight into the best ways to maximize the experience of our travel itinerary:
YVR-YYZ (AC112) - J
YYZ-AMS (AC824) - J
Returning:
BCN-YUL (AC1913) - "Premium Rouge"
YUL-YVR (AC309) - PE
Other than visiting the Signature Suite in YYZ (we are on paid J), is there anything else we should know / utilize on our trip in J? Also, does anyone have experience with the BCN or YUL Priority Pass lounges (are they worth using four of my annual passes)? Any insights or advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks for the help,
YVRPPL

Have you flown J before? If not be aware that you can use priority checkin and security. I got separated from my friend who hasnt done much up front travel and when he eventually appeared he had been standing waiting in the security line for a while.
Enjoy the SSL, Ive heard some people found it a bit over the top but generally good reviews.
Unfortunately AC J service can be hit and miss. It can be exceptional, it can be a bit meh. So temper expectations and hopefully be surprised.
I assume you are aware that premier Rouge is significantly off a lie flat J seat and more like domestic J? It will be okay not not exceptional on the return. Better than Y of course.

On my first J flight I stood in the economy line and took regular security.
A friend sat on the floor of a cancelled flight for hours instead of waiting at a lounge. He may identify himself if he/she wishes to. What a noob.

If you aren't in the bulkhead, yes. Loop the cover into the seatback flap which can't have any other purpose.

there are nice shops and a few restaurants at the airport so you could spend your time at those and you wouldn't be missing anything.

I flew to LHR in J in April and had a similar experience as your friend, as I spent some time trying to figure out where the Priority Check-in was at YVR. I ended up sleeping most of the flight so I didn't really get to experience the full AC J service.
I've also heard that about premier Rouge but I'm not too worried as its a daytime flight.

Enjoy the SSL, see if you still want to partake in plane food (theres normally a all at once service on later flights), get some sleep and enjoy not being crammed into a tiny seat next to other uncomfortable people for n hours. Then get off the plane before all of them.
Just keep your expectations low and even PR isnt too terrible as long as you are happy to watch stuff on your or their iPad. If its your own get the app in advance if you want their content, if its theirs they love to collect ridiculously early before landing so be warned. At least mainline IFE can be watched pretty close to (and brought it in non J) landing.

AC J can be a positive experience. On a good day their soft and hard product can be a very good experience, on a bad day it can truly suck - especially in IRROPs but again, you are screwed less in J than Y here.
ACs major issue remains consistency (a lack). Along with deflating seats, crap IT and the worst OTP in the continent (or one of). And that they charge a premium for this!

I feel really bad for the OP. The level of negativity on this forum can sometimes be toxic. The whole J experience is amazing, even on AC, when you are used to travelling in economy. Several posters on this board are hostile or at best indifferent towards AC and will take every occasion to spill their venom. Is AC the bestest most extraordinary travel experience in the world? Of course not. But it is still pretty darn good and well worth enjoying when taking your GF on a holiday in Europe. Context is key in everything. When you are travelling in J on a weekly basis on OPM, of course you start being nit-picky but that is not what this thread is about.
YVRPPL, I still remember my first few TATL business-class flights. I couldn't sleep most of the way because I was excited to be so lucky to be in this big lie-flat seat while sipping some bubbly. I am sure you and your girlfriend will remember this trip forever. So, I suggest you enjoy the priority everything - check-in, security, boarding, immigration lane, sit back once you are on-board and just forget the nasty posts above. Enjoy the pre-departure drink, which may or not be champagne, have a cocktail after take-off, maybe try the new Signature cocktail if you feel so inclined, or just a nice G&T. Enjoy your meal, it will be pretty good when you are used to the crap they serve in economy class. Try out a few different wines, there will be several to choose from so don't hesitate to ask to taste before settling on one. Enjoy the cheese course and the port wine. And then save some room for dessert, I hear the new sugar tart is quite good. Then try to sleep for a couple of hours. If you are awake in the middle of the night, head up to the galley to find the snack basket - chips, granola bars, fruits, Lindt and Kit-Kat will be available. If not hungry, just grab something and save it for later. I always ask not to be woken for breakfast but usually end up waking up anyway when the crew starts serving it anyway. Ask for a cappucino or an espresso, they can make those on-board and are pretty decent. While you are at it, have a mimosa, that is always a good way to start you day.
Premium rouge will be quite acceptable for a day flight. Much less choice of food or drink, but the crews are typically young and enthusiastic. I have done the BCN-YUL flight a few times and always enjoyed it.
There are several threads on this board about the Signature Suite, the Signature class service, and Premium rouge but I wouldn't bother going through all of it. Again, a lot of posts are contaminated with negativity and indifference. I suggest you go in with an open mind and enjoy all that is offered.
I hope you and your girlfriend have an amazing trip!
