Cancelling a eupgrade request

Just wondering if anyone has tried this successfully? I am flying soon SYD-YVR-LAX, if the SYD-YVR does not come through for me I would not want to use 6 eupgrade credits for the 2nd leg as I would rather save those for a long haul. Currently only 7 seats are open SYD-YVR(0- R obviously) so I dont expect to have my 4 day window clear but possibly it may (or not!) at the airport.

If I cant get the long haul section and the second YVR-LAX leg opens within 4 day (there is serveral R seats open and we are less than 7 days out) how do I cancel that portion, bearing in mind I probably wont find out until I am at SYD the fate of the SYD-YVR segment. For the flying I have left before March 1 2012 I cant waste 6 certs for a 3 hour leg as all are hopefully committed to long haul flights.

Any tips or has anyone had a similar experience?

Thanks

If you cancel a cleared upgrade, you are put back into economy but if your original fare bucket isn't open anymore, you will be charged the fare difference between what you paid and the price available when you cancel.

My advice would be to only request the upgrade for SYD-YVR initially, and if it clears at the airport, you can then have one of the employees request the YVR-LAX upgrade in the system (or log-on and request it if there is time). There is the potential for SYD-YVR to clear and YVR-LAX not clear because it filed up before you put in the request, but it's the risk you take (and at least SYD-YVR would have cleared).

I would only request SYD-YVR. If that clears even at the gate, have the gate agent request YVR-LAX, if available it will clear immediately or go on WL. No additional E-Credits will be deducted.
Done it with paper certs & this year with E-Credits if long haul is WL.

Thanks for the responses, it does not sound right that you may need to pay a fare difference if your eupgrade request is not successful, but I may be wrong here???Anyone know?

Regardless I think I shall take the advise of you both and request the long haul only-though there is definately R space for the short haul and would hate to miss as it will soon open up for Prestige.

Its a real shame the online system does not allow you to cancel a upgrade in advance yourself.

If anyone else has done something similiar please feel free to chime in as its good knowledge to have on FT.

Thanks again,

You don't pay a fare difference if your eUpgrade does not clear because in this case you have not moved into a new booking class.

Let's say you're on a Tango Plus S class fare. You request an upgrade but you are waitlisted. In this case, you still have your S class booking. You continue to wait until the flight boards, but, alas, your eUpgrade request is not successful. No harm, no foul, you still have an S class ticket.

Now, what rehoult was referring to is the case where you buy the S class Tango Plus ticket as in the example above, but your upgrade does clear. Now you are in a different booking class - R class. So you no longer have S class space but that's what you paid for. If you were to now cancel your eUpgrade request and there is still S class inventory left, you won't pay anything else. But if S class is no longer available, then you will have to pay the difference between your original S class ticket and the new fare class that is available (let's say H).

Does that make sense?

Thanks j_the_p for the claification and this was something I was not aware.I have gone ahead and waitlisted for the transpacific and will wait to see what happens, the short haul has been accepted. I see you can cancel a requested upgrade online (if unconfimed) or by conrtacing AC if confirmed.

Appreciate the responses.

On a side note there are 2 elites travelling and the eupgrade system required us to both request the upgrade togther and have enough credits for both in one account, rather than each being able to use our own eupgrade points individually, another strange part of the process as you may only have enough to upgrade one on an itinerary.

Cheers

Yup, one of the downsides of the new system that many of us have lobbied AC to change as soon as they can. However, if you need to, you can get around this by phoning and asking the agent to split the booking to accommodate your needs. They'll assign some new PNRs, and then you can each request your own upgrade.

There's also an option to request to be put on the standby list for DOWNGRADE at the gate if a seat in Y cabin is available there.. this will result in no additional fare collection and the eUpgrade credits will be returned to your account within 2-3 days.

Really? This is the first time I've ever heard about this. Is this really reflected in the official rule, or it's out of the kind-heartedness of the gate agents?

Thanks for the continued responses, will see how I go. Flights in 2 days, I had no idea about 2 pax on one itinerary had to use eupgrades from one account. Icalled to have split as suggested but as we have already put in a request we cant now...

Any idea if not successful how quick the eupgrades will be put back in the account as we return 3 days later!

Will keep everyone posted how it goes.

Cheers
