Thanks j_the_p for the claification and this was something I was not aware.I have gone ahead and waitlisted for the transpacific and will wait to see what happens, the short haul has been accepted. I see you can cancel a requested upgrade online (if unconfimed) or by conrtacing AC if confirmed...

There's also an option to request to be put on the standby list for DOWNGRADE at the gate if a seat in Y cabin is available there.. this will result in no additional fare collection and the eUpgrade credits will be returned to your account within 2-3 days.
