For the flying I have left before March 1 2012 I cant waste 6 certs for a 3 hour leg as all are hopefully committed to long haul flights.

Any tips or has anyone had a similar experience?

I would only request SYD-YVR. If that clears even at the gate, have the gate agent request YVR-LAX, if available it will clear immediately or go on WL. No additional E-Credits will be deducted.
Done it with paper certs & this year with E-Credits if long haul is WL.
