Over at airliners.net a contributor called bmibaby737 posted that these 6 AC birds are stuck at LHR.

Does anyone have any info of AC aircraft stuck elsewhere?

Not sure if we can use these as a proper indicator.
Surely it's not like these guys really wanted to go? So a good excuse should be very welcome.
As to whether these clouds are a real danger, I would think that the answer should not be black and white. Includes a good deal of "we don't know. Also a good deal of "they are very bad for the engines."
I would think, for instance, that if the cloud does not go above FL350, flying above should be OK as long as the concentration at lower levels is not too bad and there is an alternate that can take the plane. In an emergency, the engines might get ruined, but it's not like they'll stop working alltogether.
Real issue is more that, between 200 and 340, the cloud covers an area where most airports are.

There seems to be very limited availability on TG from MAD to BKK on 22 April. From there you should be able to work your way over to HKG or NRT, possibly via SIN.
Once in HKG or NRT, getting back to YYZ either nonstop or via YVR shouldn't be too hard (I think).
Good luck!

Another random thought - if $$$ is not a huge concern, try flying from MAD or FCO to JNB. From there you could either fly to Asia or New York (I think SAA flies to JFK).

Holy crap... will Air Canada consider routing us via the Pacific or is that not even an option to get to LHR?

I've been thinking the same thing (stuck in FRA). One possibility on expedia that would not even cost to much is Avianca BCN-BOG (bogota)-YYZ on Thursday 22nd. But it's hard to balance the risks - everything might clear up in which case better to stay put, or the ash might spread south and the remaining open airports close. I'm rebooked on FRA-YYZ for Monday 19th. That looks unlikely, but I will probably wait and see before making my next move. Pls share any good ideas you come up with

No need to go down that far south, you can catch Egyptair to say, CAI, and then take the CAI-JFK... less hassle than JNB/SAA, and it's still *A.
