Volcanic activity in Iceland delays flights to/from Europe
Ugh! Looks like my flight AC 851 LHR-YYC today may be cancelled. Inbound flight to LHR is in the air and will probably be allowed to land, but unlikely that the outbound scheduled for 1:15 PM will depart.
Looks like I have an extra day in London. Thinkng of just staying at one of the airport hotels, or is it worth going back to London and catching a show tonight?

Current word is all UK airports will be closed to departures anytime now.

Interestingly, for LHR -> YYZ BA has stopped selling fares for Friday's flights but Air Canada still has Tango+ fares. I wonder if that will change as North America wakes up.
Good luck making it back, I am supposed to be on a YYZ bound flight tomorrow, hence my initial interest.

several days?
they seem to suggest in ARN and COP that LHR may be closed down for 48 or even 72 hours... The volcano is not showing signs of diminishing its ash output. However, the dissipation of the cloud seems to be rather fast, especially with a set of cold fronts coming down.

AC 868 cancelled.I had called ahead from YSB after noting issues at Iceland.
All clear at that point. Arrived YYZ and went straight to concierge office,after an agent met me coming off flight.
I am rescheduled tomorrow on way to HAM via FRA at this point.
Concierges were extremely helpful^,especially with codeshare issues,changes to tix and making sure with Lufthansa that my e-ticket with leg 3 change from FRA to HAM vs.LHR to HAM does not show up as a non use of leg 3,potentially making a missed flight leg and making my leg 4 a check-in problem

All of Germany closes down at 15:00. LHR at 13:00. Denmark at 18:00 (local times)

FRANKFURT (Dow Jones)--German flagship airline Deutsche Lufthansa AG (LHA.XE) is only mildly affected by the closure of airspace in parts of northern Europe, a spokesman for the company said Thursday.
There are only a few cancellations and some delays, Peter Schneckenleitner said. At the moment, the main disruptions due to the clouds of volcanic ash blowing over from an eruption in Iceland are in the U.K. and Scandinavia, he said.
The closure of some small parts of Germany's airspace isn't a significant problem for the company as they can be flown around, Schneckenleitner said.
The airline doesn't expect closures to last long as meteorologists have said the volcanic ash will only pose problems for air traffic for a few days at the most, the spokesman said.
Earlier Thursday, another spokesman, Thomas Jachnow, said Lufthansa cancelled afternoon flights to London's Heathrow Airport, as well as a number of flights to Scandinavia and Dublin, Ireland.

Just to add that airspace over much of Northern Europe is now closed or closing very shortly ... UK, Ireland, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, etc. Could be chaos, this is the start of a peak travel weekend as the Easter school break is just finishing!

Just to add that airspace over much of Northern Europe is now closed or closing very shortly ... UK, Ireland, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, etc. Could be chaos, this is the start of a peak travel weekend as the Easter school break is just finishing!

Hmmm.
Booked to LHR tomorrow night. Final destination on the continent.
Better keep my eyes open and be able to make alternate arrangements on a short notice. I planned to have lunch with my son who is also scheduled to go through LHR on Sat but going in the opposite direction. That will likely get canceled. Oh well.
