I take it these rules only apply to travelling to USA and not within Canada / International?

Correct only travelling to the US from Canada. Travelling to the US from anywhere else (in my experience UK and Japan) they are fine.

Sunday Jan 10

Walked into T1 at 4:53am, no-one in J checkin so had my bags tagged there, through US customs to MLL by 5:23am - pretty painless so far.

Told to go to the gate one hour early for pat down...

Any reports on recent YUL connecting experience?

Can anyone report recent YUL connecting experience to the US? How much time through customs (without Nexus), through security, and pad down? I have a 1 hr connecting flight YYZ-YUL-LAS coming up.

Thanks!
GT

Yes. This is a unique Canadian rule applicable to flights departing from Canada to the U.S.A. only. Carry on is allowed on all domestic Canadian flights as well as international flights departing directly from Canada to destinations other than the U.S.A., subject to the usual size, piece count and weight limitations. You may also bring carry on onboard flights to U.S.A. departing from any other international cities, e.g., NRT, LHR, ICN, PEK.

Passengers on flights to Canada, including those departing from the U.S.A., are allowed to bring carry on onboard.

AC has not made any public statement to support or disapprove such measure.

There may have been a naive ulterior motive for such rule which appears to be "backfiring".

Very handy to have this detail. I think I might print a copy and have it in my laptop case just in case there's some debate.

These details tell me I'll still be able to entertain myself on a flight, so I'm less concerned about new bookings now. If only the US would settle, so that CATSA could settle. Whaddaya think, maybe by March?

John Baird is on Question Period (CTV) at 11AM EST Sunday morning. The promo said something about discussing "airport delays".

Be careful - don't believe a copy of the rules is exempt from being in a laptop bag - it doesn't qualify as laptop and laptop accessories. You'll have to keep it on your person if you want to bring them in with you

Seriously, I completely agree. Why did they rewrite these, rather than just comply with the new US directives, which effect far fewer passengers.

What irks me is I adopted a no checked bag philosophy a few years ago, after realizing I was packing way too much stuff. I bought a beautiful Red Oxx Air Boss. No wheels and tough as nails ...

But now the whole advantage is lost, and I'm considering pulling out my giant Samsonite hard shell in protest.
Interesting products both the jacket & the carry-on, thanks for the links Bokehman!!! I still travel outside the US( or even in Canada), after Orlando this week heading to Jamaica for one week vacation so can still use a good carry-on

Because (1) they want to make sure that they are not violating the Charter by discriminating on the basis of nationality, and (2) they have to work out the logistics of identifying at security where the passenger is connecting from (non-trivial).

And why is TSA not requiring those 14 countries' nationals (or people connecting from those countries) to undergo the extra inspections on domestic flights? Could it be that it would be too onerous for the domestic airports, but they really don't care about the burden they impose on the non-US airports?

I found the Air Boss through another site ...

http://www.onebag.com/

He helped design the Air Boss.

The one comment a lot of people make about it is ... "But it doesn't have wheels." Well, wheels break, reduce the amount of storage room, and (biggest for me) get sloppy in the winter. The bag is light and can hold a lot of stuff if required. It was developed by a bunch of ex Navy (I think) seals, who know a thing or two about making stuff that lasts. The zippers and straps are super robust, and the bag just looks nice. In fact, after I got mine, my GF bought one and two of her friends also bought one. There are two outer, main compartments and one inner compartment (3 zippers go around the 3 sides of the bag). I have put my iBook in the inner compartment and just pulled out for the x-ray tray (well, not anymore I guess).

Given the light weight, and given a good strap, I could certainly do without the wheels.

My carry-on has wheels, but as a relatively heavy hardside, it needs them. But for the times that I need to check it (planeside or otherwise), the extra protection of the hardside is peace of mind.

But I might think about one of these once the security situation settles down again. Thanks for the links!

Nothing new in that interview, except that they won't be putting kids under 18 through the body scanners (I guess kiddy porn laws are getting in the way of that) so they'll undergo mandatory pat-downs instead.

WRT the carry-on limitations, all he said was they're currently "looking at it" - no promises of change or return to pre-Christmas status quo.

Utter speculation with no back-up.
