*** MOD NOTE: Please do not remove ***

A friendly reminder that Flyertalk is not a marketplace, and nothing may be offered (or solicited) for sale or barter within the general forums - which includes offering vouchers for free. For those with sufficient posts and length of membership, trading/exchange is allowed solely within Coupon Connection, and then only in accordance with the specific rules of that forum.

Please do not attempt to solicit, sell or trade upgrade vouchers within this forum. Posts will be deleted and the members concerned potentially subject to disciplinary action. **Please note that this includes directly using the PM system to do so without first posting in Coupon Connection**. Thanks for your co-operation.
A3 provides all Gold members with four vouchers for upgrade from Economy to Business. Silver members get two upgrade vouchers.

Criteria
  • You must be travelling on A3 or OA metal - codeshares are not included.
  • The original ticket must be issued on either A3 (390) or OA (050) ticket stock.
  • Only revenue (paid) tickets, in fare classes other than U, P & T on a GoLight fare basis, can be upgraded, but not redemption tickets.
  • All flights on the ticket must be on A3 or OA metal.
  • There must be award availability in I-class for the upgrades to clear. You can check this by logging in to M&B then going to https://en.aegeanair.com/milesandbon...t/spend-miles/ The results page will initially be a calendar. To see Business availability, you have to click through to the next step. (You can also use a free or paid tool such as ANA website, UA website (looking for saver award space), Aeroplan, AwardNexus or ExpertFlyer to check for availability.)
  • One coupon per person per journey leg is required - so, for example, TXL-ATH-SKG and return via the same route would require four coupons per person.
  • Anyone can be upgraded using the coupons - you do not have to be travelling on the same booking or even the same plane.

Procedure
  • Call A3 to request the upgrade. The phone numbers are listed at https://aegeanairlines.custhelp.com/ (most of them should go to the same call centre in Greece).
  • If successful, a new ticket will be issued (with a new number). The PNR will remain unchanged.
  • You are liable for any extra taxes applicable to Business Class (e.g. APD from the UK). Sometimes this gets charged, sometimes it doesn't - if it's due and you're not charged because the agent forgets, you've just been lucky.
  • If there's no immediate I-class availability, you can ask to be waitlisted for upgrade. The ability to waitlist was reported to have been removed in August 2016, but was again possible in September. Check with the agent - option available on May 2018.
    • in case you requested to be waitlisted for upgrade and want to check if the customer care agent made the changes on your booking you can check the reservation on checkmytrip.com (click here), the leg you requested the upgrade will be shown here as ”Waitlisted”.
  • If you wish to upgrade one segment of a multi-segment trip (e.g. XXX-ATH-YYY) and there is availability on the leg you wish to upgrade, you may still have to be waitlisted due to married segment issues. The process of clearing the waitlist is somewhat confusing and may result in frustration due to the availability seeming to disappear but in reality, this may mean that the segments have been "unmarried" and the availability has been allocated to your reservation. See post 2272 and the update in post 2294 for more details.

Benefits
  • No matter what the fare basis of the original ticket, you receive full Business Class benefits after upgrade.
  • This includes lounge access (useful if you're upgrading someone other than yourself who has no status, or if you've run out of Silver lounge vouchers) and full baggage allowance (it applies for first leg as well, in case you are upgraded only on the 2nd leg of your trip - confirmed on the etix).
  • Because the ticket books as a redemption, the free car hire is not included.

Mileage/segment earning
  • You will earn at the underlying rate of your purchased ticket in economy, not at a business class rate. Because status miles are awarded, this also counts as a segment for re-qualification purposes.
  • The flights may credit automatically, but may take longer to credit than tickets that have not been changed. They may also credit as 0 miles, and later change to the correct rate. If the flights have not credited properly after a few weeks then calling A3 will rectify this rapidly.

Expiry
  • The vouchers expire at the end of your membership year - they do not carry over, even if status is retained. A new set is issued every year.
  • It is the date when you use the voucher that matters. It can upgrade a flight that takes place after expiry as long as you apply the voucher before.
  • On upgrade from Silver to Gold, any remaining Silver upgrade coupons expire, but they are replaced by four Gold ones which expire at the end of the Gold membership year.

BEWARE
  • Once you have upgraded your seat, your ticket will be reissued. Suddenly, this ticket may be VERY expensive to change. If, for instance, you later decide to travel on a different date, you will probably be required to rebook into Business, even if Economy was available for new bookings. A3 will charge you the difference from your original Economy fare to a NEW Business fare. Plus fees, taxes and whatnot. Update 18/08/2021: this appears to no longer be the case, as an upgraded ticket was changed and the underlying Economy fare was used for the upgraded segments. The coupon was "removed" from the old dates and "reapplied" to the new dates.
  • Coupons will not be returned/reinstated. Once a coupon is applied, it is gone for good (the T&Cs printed on the coupons allow for date and time changes, but not route changes).
  • If you want to provide your coupons to upgrade a friend's travel, it is advisable to call in yourself. Your friend can call in if they know your name, birthdate, M&B-number and the email address associated with your account. That means: Anyone who knows these particulars can use your coupons without your knowledge. They do NOT need the coupon numbers.
  • Crediting upgraded segments to another program will likely fail, as it will be reported as I-class. It may be possible to retro-claim the miles.

Not for an arriving flight to any UK airport, no - APD only applies to departures. Specifically for LHR, the passenger service charge is the same irrespective of class travelled. It might be a re-price of something else that's been affected by a currency change caused by weakening of the Euro, but to be 7+ Euros that would have to be a fair lump of something. I would ask more questions.

The expiry dates still show as November 2015 but they show as status "Expired" and can no longer be accessed. Luckily I'd already used the seat upgrades so it's no great loss really but I was planning on making a booking with the companion vouucher this week. Hope this saves somebody losing out...
Just an update on this previous post of mine. I was just about to book some domestic flights when I saw that my companion coupon had expired. After mentally kicking myself for being too slow I though - "what the hell, I'll try anyway". The good news is that the "Expired" coupon worked and my flights are ticketed, with the discount. So, the A3 IT quirks can also work in ones favour...

Smile very helpful customer service

Just upgraded my flights to SKG using the cupons.

Called Aegean in Frankfurt, agent spoks German (physically based in Greece). She ask me for the ticket number and phone number to call me back. After 15 min got a call on my phone, everything was set. I haven't been asked for my M+B number (was in the booking) nor cupon number. ^

There was no charge at all.

Used them to upgrade OSL-ATH and back for me and the misses. No problems, but the call took 15mins (there was a long holding time). I booked one piece of extra luggage in advance, which them were unable to remove. She promised however, that I could use the extra luggage code for a later flight (within 12 months). PS: Our luggage allowance was also taken over for connecting flights to HER, although I didnt have enough vouchers for them. Very nice. On the downside - the promised confirmation email never arrived. I checked the ticket today, and it says class "I" for the respective legs. I hope thats the fare code for upgraded biz.

"I" is the correct fare code, but if your new e-mail hasn't arrived then a re-issue of your ticket is probably still necessary (it'll be a new ticket number, but same PNR). If the e-mail doesn't arrive within a few days, call back - I had to because the agent dealing with it was away for a few days and it never got actioned when she returned. This isn't a problem in terms of your booking disappearing, but you won't be able to check-in.

But if jamesclandestine was able to check the ticket and saw the I fare code, he must have everything he needs. Perhaps he means a confirmation of a "use the extra luggage code for a later flight". This is something I've never heard of before and I wonder how this could be done. The original ticket, later upgraded, included one piece and jamesclandestine wanted have this changed to a "go light" ticket given that the upgrade included a complimentary piece. "Removing" the piece of luggage would imply cancelling and re-issuing the ticket, which would have, possibly, cost something... At any rate, I would not really count on a future "use the extra luggage code for a later flight", I really can't see how (and why) this could be done.

Actually, you can buy extra luggage even with a go light fare (costs 20 Euro per piece, if I remember correctly). You get a separate confirmation number for this extra purchase of luggage.
I had once the situation that I had to cancel such a flight, and the lady on the phone told me that I can use the confirmation of the luggage for a future flight (up to 1 year).

Haven't tried it though...

I purchased a flight for 2 friends MAN-ATH-TLV , I upgraded them both on the second leg, as the first leg MAN-ATH is only economy class (which very strange because I think this is the longest route flown by A3 - see here ) . When I asked the agent, he told me that the 2 passengers would only receive 2 pieces of checked luggage for the second flight, but not the first (which when purchased was a hand baggage only fare). I think this is total rubbish, as I once upgraded only a second leg for someone else - the same scenario just different airports - and the agent told me that as it was one ticket all the way through, the extra luggage would apply for the first leg also. I would be delighted if someone could confirm this for me.

I forgot to mention that when I log into the booking on the website it says "2 pieces of luggage" for each passenger without mentioning which leg or anything.

My recent booking on CHQ-ATH-BUD show clearly on all legs the 2 pieces of checked luggage, even if only the last leg is upgraded to business. This is similar as I heard from other people recently on the forum.

Yeah thats my impression as well. I can retrieve the info online via my old booking reference and last name. I assume that that will be enough to check in as well (there is an option to print out the info).

Regarding the luggage, I have now a code for extra luggage, and they have an online function that reads "add extra luggage". I assume thats what ill use for a later flight then. My current allowance is listed as two pieces + 1 extra for A*Gold for me and two pieces for the misses.

Flights can be listed as I class but still not be correctly (re)-ticketed - that was my experience and it took five phone calls back-and-forth to resolve it. It's no different to having a hold on a redemption - until such time as it's actually processed, it's not confirmed and valid.

That said, the fact you can see an increased luggage allowance is positive, so it might well be you're fine and it's just that something's gone awry with the e-mail system. I would just be cautious - getting to the airport and finding there's a problem is usually not the best scenario, particularly if M&B is closed down for the day (and it's that department that tickets it, not the general reservations because in effect it's a redemption.

You could check the e-ticket number. If that has changed you can be fairly sure that a new ticket has been issued. Perhaps the original email arrived in your spam-folder?

Does anybody know if the use of LH's business lounge when flying with an upgraded A3 ticket on business out of FRA is permitted?

Well ... your ticket is business class, so yes.
The gold card gives you access anyway (if its yours)

I was charged an extra €18 for a recent upgrade of segments LHR-ATH-LHR.

This fits with the extra £13 UK APD tax that would be levied. No other charges added such as extra PSC or Fuel Surcharges that could have possibly been charged for a LHR inbound-only route.
