Novotel Edinburgh Centre

I have stayed several times before in this hotel but this was a standard Novotel with the typical interiors we all know by heart and that I am so tired about. My last visit in EDI and stay in this hotel was in 2014. I first did not recognize the airport when I disembarked from my flight and did not recognize the Novotel interiors when I arrived. The hotel has been fully renovated since my last visit and this is for good.

The lobby has a much warmer atmosphere

Check In

Check-in formalities were expedited in 30sec. I was likely one of the last of the day to be checked-in. Keys, drink voucher and list of Plat benefits were already prepared and were waiting for me. But, as too often, not a word about loyalty, etc.

I had booked a Superior/Queen bed & Sofa room day was upgraded to Executive/Queen bed & Sofa which is the same as Superior but with extra amenities (Nespresso machine, bathrobe and slippers). Nice surprise discovering the room as I was wrongly expecting the traditional dated Novotel room. Much more modern style for the bedroom and the bathroom.

The welcome gift with a welcome card handwritten by the GM  (yes, we are not in French Novotel ;)

Only “bad” part : the wall under the window was severely damaged likely after prolonged water leakage or after some typical Scottish rain showers and if the window was left open. Too bad for a new (or almost new) room. But the curtain was hiding it all.

Restaurant and bar have been also completely renovated and are nice. I had dinner once and food was very good. Staff very pleasant at the restaurant.

Swimming pool

The hotel still has of course its nice indoor pool.

Overall, good stay and nice to see the Novotel brand capable of getting out of their cold atmosphere and of their 50 years old horrible “murs crépis” style (sorry, don’t know how to say that in English, but all my fellow French FTers of the Accor forum will know what I mean ;) ). I was a bit reluctant to come back but now will not hesitate.

Same new room interior/furnitures/sofa/moquette/bathroom exactly as the Novotel Milano Linate airport. The only one really nice Novotel in Italy I would say ... 😃

even lobby and common areas on this Novotel Edinburgh seem very nice and warm.

Yes this is a good hotel. Unfortunately when I was there in October 2018 the renovations in the check in area was still being done. But looks great now. One of my favorite Novotel's I have stayed at.

This seems to be a new brand standard room design - I was wondering if this was a concept only to be found in a few hotels but I have found this exact room or something very similar (same carpet/desk/large TV/bathroom etc) in a few recently renovated Novotels - the most recent being the Novotel in Nice (where incidentally I got all of my Gold benefits including voucher for two drinks, late checkout until 4pm, welcome gift and note & room upgrade). I actively avoid staying in the old style Novotel rooms now - sometimes even opting for a renovated ibis in some cities unless the leisure amenities outweigh the negatives of an old Novtotel. It's good to see more and more being updated - especially outside London in the UK!

These new designs are a refreshing change - I too try to avoid 'old style' Novotel rooms.

It would be good if we could start a list of refurbished Novotel's somehow, is this possible (sorry, not sure how this can be done!).

Had this room type 2 years ago at Krakow City West ( was on of the 4 rooms that they had refurbished then ) It is a much better layout and design than the "original" that is now so dated. Also the Novotel at Limoges has this room now - was beeing refurbished ( when we were there a year ago )

Think Accor is now looking at designs for a new Ibis room as new survey on According to You has pictures of new room types .... the one that is the "better" option is a sort of cut down version of this room. So all good in my book.

Novotel Edinburgh Centre

I had a two night stay at the Novotel Edinburgh Centre. I did not try any food or use any of the facilities, so i will be reviewing only the room and the service.

Check In

The uber ride from the airport took aproximatley 25 min. I had checked in online before my arrival.

I was warmly welcomed by a lovely receptionist. She thanked me for my loyalty and explained the hotel facilities.

She asked if i was planning on using the hotels pool, as a health document would need to be filled out and a separate pool key needed to be picked up at reception. Unfortunatley i had not brought my swimming trunks.

I received a two category room upgrade from a Standard room with queen size bed and sofa to an Executive room with queen size bed & convertible sofa. Drink voucher was also handed out.

Truly a very professional receptionist, with a big smile. Left a very good first impression.

Good sized room with a work desk, sofa and good amenities. IMG_3853.jpeg

Safe, iron and ironingboard, hairdryer and slippers. No bathrobe.IMG_3852.jpeg

Coffee machine and kettle. Both coffee capsules and instant coffee.IMG_3854.jpeg

Water and milk in the minibar.IMG_3837.jpeg

Welcome amenity. A hand written letter, chocolates, and a packaged of 10 scottish tea bags. The chocolates were delicious.IMG_3855.jpeg

View from the room facing the courtyard.

Overall the room was nice and clean, and felt spacious. The bed was comfortable and the lighting was good. I only found it hard to control the temperature, the room was too warm for me and the AC didn´t seem to do much at its lowest setting.

The bathroom was open concept. Not really my style, but i ended up not minding it. I could see it being less desirable if i wasn´t alone.

There was a slight sewage smell when opening the shower door, but it would disappear as soon as the water strarted running.

The bathroom amenities included full sized bottles of products from PRIJA and a vanity kit.

Hands and body moisturiser.

Vitalising cleansing hand wash.

Vitalising shower gel and shampoo.

Protective conditioner.

The location is good. It is about a 12 minute walk from the Royal Mile and a 20-30 minute drive from the airport. I was considering staying at the Ibis right next to the Royal Mile, the price was the same, and i ended up choosing the Novotel. I did not mind the extra walk for the extra comfort.

Overall i had a very pleasant stay at this property. The staff and the service was very good. Great loyalty recognition. Great new novotel room style. And a good location.

I can not speak for the dining experience and the hotel facilities, for that see Goldoraks review.
