Anyone know why 839 (LAX-SYD) was cancelled last night (1/9/13)? I see they have a added flight from LAX-SYD tonight.

I am flying UA 839 Monday 14 jan - wonder sometimes why I put myself to the stress of flying on United.
My daughter and son in law were on that flight today 11th now accommodated on tomorrow's 870.
Have not heard if they are sending an extra 747 over here or not.
There will be very angry pax at Sydney if one of tomorrow's services to the USA are cancelled and they get offloaded for another day or two.

UA 839 LAX-SYD on Jan 9 returned to LAX ...

About five hours after take off. Anyone know why?

That's kind of close to the go/no go to Hawaii, so I'm thinking it was mechanical or medical.

United Cargo is calling it "Operations"

The on board announcement was air conditioning and Hawaii could not fix problem. Spoke to passenger last night at LAX.

These friggin' 747s limp back and forth across the Pacific like the Memphis Belle. Every day a crapshoot.

Must have been mechanical. The flight cancelled, which meant 840 SYD to LAX today cancelled also. But Thursday night they sent 2 747s out of LAX and one from SFO to SYD, so there will be 3 planes coming back tonight.

Did you not see my comment on the AC going out? Like I said I was sitting and talking with some people last night at gate 74 and the in-flight announcement was the AC and Hawaii was not an option. Any further insight besides mechanical?

Everyone looked at Flightaware and missed the obvious? Look at the altitudes, this flight never got above 24,000, which is well below the typical altitudes flown. I'm guessing there was a pressurization problem. Compare to UAL863, but the point is that 24,000 is a low cruising altitude, even at full weight.

That's why I was thinking it was something more than just air conditioning.

But at 24000 ft, wouldn't the oxygen masks be deployed? After all, Mount Everest is about 25000 feet and they use oxygen there. Could the low altitude be in use in order to burn off more fuel so they could land?

Where are you seeing that? When I look in FlightAware I only see altitude data for the first ~30 minutes of flight, so I can't see how you're saying it never got above FL240?

Low altitudes like this for US-SYD flights are not uncommon during the first periods of flight. FL240 is lower than normal, but not overly. eg, on the 7th of Jan the same flight stayed at FL260 for the majority of the first 4 hours of flight.
