I posted something last week that might get the job done.

I'm looking for something like this for a tablet (length about 10.2"), which probably means the A5 version would unfortunately be just a tad too small. I'm curious about the dimensions of this one. The Amazon page says it's 15.8", which seems quite dubious; other colors of the same thing claim 13.8", which seems almost reasonable, given that an A4 pad is 11.7" long.
Can you tell us what the actual dimensions are? Can anyone share the dimensions of the A5 version? Thanks.

I use the Scottevest on flights pretty much whenever I am not wearing a suit jacket. I don't try putting my laptop/chromebook in it, but I typically have in it the following:
- House and car keys
- Wallet
- Kindle
- USB cord and power adapter (for my smart phone)
- Anker USB battery
- Smartphone
- Headphones (cheap skullcandy, I don't bother with noise cancelling any more)
- Any medication I have to take on/near the flight
- About 100 calories per hour of flight in compact snacks
- Chewing gum
Since it has any metal I'd be carrying on me, I just take it off at PreCheck and drop it on the belt.

I had the same issue as the OP. My usual carry-on options (a 15 year old Samsonite laptop backpack, or a Delsey roller) are too big to be under the seat in front of me and have to be place in the overhead compartments. Nine times out of ten, I end up forgetting something in it and being reluctant to bother my neighbour to access it or waiting for the plane to taxi/take off/climb before I can get my stuff.
After weeks of browsing FT, Ebags and a bazillion other websites I just ordered a Tumi Pinckney Flap Brief hoping that I'll be able to have all my gizmos (Kindle, Bose NC Headset, MP3 Player, various cables and plugs...) at hand and still be able to fit it under the seat in front of me and have space to extend my legs. I should test it for the first time in early August and see if I finally found my gizmobag/personal item.

Links, for the lazy:
Redd Oxx Gator
Tom Bihn Co-Pilot
They both look a little too chunky to easily keep in your seat, by the way.

I travel with one bag,and I'm happy to have it under seat.
I use this bag for most trips.
I can actually slide a small handbag next to it and still be completely under the seat.
No deadlifting a case into the overheads, easy boarding, easy to deplane.
It's only but major fault is no shoulder strap.
Because of that, I've kept a backpack for trips that are more treks.
I carry an iPad2, phone, one charger, both cables (thanks, Apple), earbuds, water bottle and book at the top. Only the liquid bag is higher up, and I often shuffle that down once I am at the gate.
If I add the ScottEvest, it's dead simple travel.
