Several museums in Washington also banned them recently.
I hate them. They were the bane of my existence on my trip to Indonesia last year. It's impossible to take an unimpeded photo when everyone has these sticks in the air all over the place. It seems to encourage them to take even more pictures

I have a stick for my gopro. I don't see a problem with selfie sticks. You see them a mile away. I'm unsure how you would get your eye poked out? Can't you just walk a foot in either direction of the person that has one?
I was just at the Peak in HK - didn't even notice anyone with them.
I hate asking people to take pictures.

Evidently you have not seen people recklessly swinging their selfie sticks around in crowded places or recklessly extending their selfie sticks in a random direction when they first unpack them for use that day.

I've been doing this for years, long before digital cameras.

I don't have to prove anything. I enjoy the places I go. I work hard at the photography and then share what I hope are unique, non-touristy photos with family, friends and others, who never question whether I was actually there. And some of the best are sold to stock image banks or publications, none of which have ever questioned whether I was actually there or actually the one who made the shots. Likewise with copyright filings. I don't need to actually be in any of the images to get them registered as my images.
What kind of friends do you have that you have to "prove" such things??

My family and friends would never doubt that I have gone where I say I have gone.
But then I would never lie about it, either.
My favorite 'selfies' are the rare ones someone took without my knowledge, three of which ended up in promotional brochures.
