Japan restricts operations of Thai carriers
Not very re assuring to see that Thailand's Civil Aviation failed a recent safety audit.

This severely restricts TG and other carriers in their operations to Japan. I don't doubt other jurisdictions will follow.

Evidently just five TG charters in April affected but could expect more if Thailand doesn't make some improvements, other than the usual application of porcine lipstick.
Thai airlines could face ban on new flights after audit raises safety concerns
International Civil Aviation Organisation raises worries and now new international flights could be halted and more inspections are planned
Thailand is facing bans on new international flights and increased inspections after the International Civil Aviation Organisation flagged significant concerns about the country's aviation safety.
Thai Airways President Jarumporn Chotikasathein said it would have to cancel "about five" charter flights that were being planned for the April holiday schedule. He said Thai Airways and other Thai carriers will also have to undergo increased inspections by regulators from other countries as a result of the ICAO designation.

Is there a safety issue with TG? I do not fly LCCs, and always feel very safe on TG and PG.
Could Japan's actions be motivated by protectionism of national carriers JL and NH, under the false pretense of safety concerns? What about truly unsafe airlines like CI (China Airlines) that fly to Japan?
I haven't fully read the above links, but am skeptical of claims that TG is unsafe.

fly. However the overall safety culture in Thailand and those bottom tier LLCs are probably creating the issues as are the authorities refusing to follow proper international procedures.

Transport Ministry to take over aviation supervision from Civil Aviation Department
February 18, 2015
The Transport Ministry plans to take over the supervisory responsibilities over the safety and aviation management from the Civil Aviation Department in a major restructure to improve the safety and aviation management standards, Deputy Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisit said today.
The restructuring is deemed necessary after the International Civil Aviation Organisation of the United Nations gave a poor audit rating of Thailand’s safety and aviation management by the CAD.
According to ICAO, Thailand scored 35.6 percent which is lower than Cambodia’s 40.18 percent and the lowest in Asean region.
However, Transport Minister Prajin Juntong said that the CAD must improve its performance in two areas namely supervision on safety and supervision on aviation management – that means the future issuance of operating licences to various domestic airports must be tightened up.
He said that the CAD would have to work out its working plan to upgrade its performance for submission to the ICAO within March 2.

The issue here is with the government regulators.
I expect Thai themselves are still running a very safe and compliant airline as they have for decades

+1. It just doesn't give a good global impression and won't help TG improve it's booking situation as perception is reality to the buying public.

We have not heard directly from ICAO, only some "biased" responses by Thailand authorities. But the failings in the ICAO audit seem numerous, significant and hard to correct in the short-run, except with cosmetic changes which will not fool ICAO.
Even if TG is not a major culprit here, they could be badly hurt if EU takes some measures as they have done in the past for other countries. Given the current ambiance about safety in Europe, that is a not a negligible risk.

It seems like this issue may be quite a bit more severe than the "authorities" are letting on, with regards to potential sanctions? It is disappointing that the details of the ICAO audit have not yet been made public.
