Welcome to the 2017 "NEWBIE LOUNGE"
Ask Your Consolidated / Combined AA Questions Here (flame free)
MODERATOR GUIDEPOST:
(This post can only be edited by moderators.)

Welcome to the Newbie Lounge!
Welcome to Flyertalk!

The Newbie Lounge is a place for newer and less experienced members to ask their questions about American Airlines and the AAdvantage program and have answered by our more experienced and knowledgeable members. Feel free to ask any question related to American Airlines and AAdvantage here.

NOTE: This is a "flame free" thread; flaming, personal criticism for "failing to search" etc. is not allowed (if posted, the post will be summarily deleted, the poster subject to sanctions).

Advanced questions posed by veteran FT users may be moved and / or merged into existing master or GUIDE threads, most of which have Wikiposts at the top of the page that contain summaries of important information.

We volunteer Moderators monitor this "lounge" thread to assist you as well. When browsing the fora, look at the page tops of the various forums. There will be a menu, and often "sticky" threads, and threads with header "wiki posts" (created and maintained by the FlyerTalk community) with important information relating to that forum / topic.

Don't hesitate to contact a moderator or another member if you have any additional questions. You can PM the Moderators by clicking on , which pops up a message box; the message goes to all this forum's Moderators. Note that unlike some sites with paid staff moderators, FlyerTalk Moderators are volunteers, and most work, travel, go on holiday, etc. You can Private Message us using the PM system (My Flyertalk) and our handles.

We're glad you've chosen to join the Flyertalk frequent flyer community!

Q. How can I find information more easily than reading through all the threads? Now that I'm here, what do I do next?

Check out the following resources:

Searching can be key to finding important information and answers without waiting for someone to drop by and answer, and it helps prevent that information fragmentation. FlyerTalk Advanced Search can seem quirky to the infrequent user, but it's fairly powerful if one knows how to use it. There are several ways to search:

Forum basics: Now that the new AA has become by some measures "the world's largest airline", this new, combined has become a "mega-forum", very large, very active - and theoretically very difficult to find information and easy to lose one's place. Having to search for and sort through dozens - or more - of threads on baggage, airports, minimum connect times or the like could soon become unproductive and discouraging.

To prevent this from occurring, please note we try to:

Keep a few "sticky" threads: such as GUIDE posts, OSO / IROPS, etc. for urgent and quick reference, such as basic "where do I find" reasons

Keep threads to specific topics: Prevent information fragmentation and loss by consolidating questions, answers and discussion of one topic contained in one thread. (This also honors those members who have already shared valuable information and experiences.)

"Popular" threads are likely to have a Wikipost at the head that will summarize important information and have resource links. These are "community property", and as any wiki are established, maintained and updated by the members (with 90 days of tenure and 90 posts on FlyerTalk).

You may find your question or post merged into one of those threads. Be sure that we will leave a link behind from your original thread, and to look up to see if there's a wiki with information. We apologize for any possible inconvenience or difference between this forum and others, but we think you'll like some of the resources and tools here to enable more convenient, comfortable travel on AA and greater knowledge sharing.

Keep it welcoming: We're proud the members of both FFPs have kept the brickbats to a minimum; we want this forum to be welcoming, civil and information rich, so name calling (including calling a member one disagrees with "AApologist") and snark are not tolerated. Posts with such are likely to be summarily deleted in their entirety; repeated such behavior may result in suspension of one's membership privileges or being banned from this forum. Let's keep it friendly and in accordance with the FT Rules.

FlyerTalk Rules (We all agree to abide by these, and are held accountable.)
NOTE: The older AA NEWBIE LOUNGE post thread is here

Thanks for reading!

In general you still need an AA flight as part of the reservation to book a partner like QR. Selecting AA only just limits to only AA coded flights. Selecting all airlines means you dont care if the fare AA sells has OAL. However it still needs to be an AA fare. LAX-DOH by itself would be a QR fare. Though SFO-LAX-DOH could be offered.

Just out of curiosity I looked into booking Qantas then upgrading. However, that doesn't seem to be an option. Am I missing something obvious? There is no North America to asia option on the AA chart: https://www.aa.com/i18n/aadvantage-p...r-airlines.jsp

You can only use AAdvantage miles for upgrades on AA marketed and operated flights, and with certain fares on British and Iberia.

Frequent flyer number error on aa.com

I'm trying to book a ticket on aa.com and when I input my AS Mileage Plan number during the checkout process, I get an error at the top of the page informing me that there's an error with the frequent flier number. In that section in the booking, I get:

"Name and account number don't match
Please try again"

The problem is that the name and number match but AA doesn't think it matches. It seems strange to me as I never assumed that there was any sort of checking on this at the time of booking. Has anyone else encountered this error? Is this just a known bug of aa.com?

FWIW, I am booking as a guest and have tried on two different browsers.

Pacific.

So, does this mean, if I fly an MH-coded (but JL operated) Tokyo to USA, I will NOT earn any EQM/EQD/RDM's?

It sure sounds like it. But, not sure if anyone has first hand experience.
Hi there... I had the same question as you did, and FT search brought me here.

Have you flown the TYO-US segment yet? And if yes, did your miles credit without a problem to AA? I am looking to book a MH flight that codeshares with JL (JL metal) on the NRT-JFK segment and was hoping to get your experience on it.

Thanks! Please do post if they do or you get a definitive answer from AA, if it isn't too much trouble

I think this is an example of "a question responded to with the answer no" but I wanted to check with you.

I'm over from Europe and new to Domestic US flying. I have a client who will exclusively allow me to expense Economy flights, though I've noticed First is often just $100 or so more. They're very firm on wanting to actually see Economy tickets.

I'm very happy to pay the difference myself, so I was wondering Is there any way I can book an Economy ticket and then reliably upgrade with cash and/ or reissue or something else?

You can book an economy ticket and then call in to upfare to F and just pay the fare difference without a fee if that works. I'd just check with the company that they are okay with you doing that out of pocket so you don't run into any issues that way.

As Smiley90 wrote, AA are happy to allow you to upfare to first with no extra charge. As long as the client is happy with the electronic receipt for the coach fare then you should be OK. Just make sure to download whatever they want before you change it.

Thanks Smiley90 and MADPhil, that's awesome to know. I thought I'd read that wasn't possible on AA, but I'll be trying it for my first domestic flight tomorrow.

It's entirely possible.

For your client, you might be sure your original confirmation has issued with receipt and ticket number prior to upfaring. This is indeed what you paid originally for the coach flight, and you're not charging your client for the upfare (or e tea taxes and fees) once you've purchased the Coach fare and it has been ticketed.

I reached out to American Airlines via twitter and this is how it went:

Knit-in: "Hi! Do I earn AA miles on Malaysia Airlines flights operated by JAL from Tokyo to USA? Thanks!"

American Airlines: "Yes, please see this link with lots of info on how the mileage is accrued: http://bit.ly/ACCRUEMH" (this links to the MH Partner page on AA which you and I have both seen)

Knit-in: "I have seen the link. The info there doesn't include flights to US for Malaysian (operated by JAL as codeshare. Phone agents don't have a definitive answer either."

American Airlines: "Yes, you'll earn miles. Your earnings will solely depend on the booking code. Do you have a record locator you'd like us to look at?"

This exchange happened over the course of a few hours so perhaps the agent looked into it before that last message. Do you perhaps want to reach out to them via twitter with your record locator?

I wonder if this would be considered a definitive yes on the MH booking on JL metal from Asia to US?

Yes and yes, no need to worry. You will earn miles on any oneworld codeshare flights as long as the operating carrier is a oneworld airline (and have an eligible fare code of course). So a MH flight number operated by JL will earn miles as if it were a MH metal flight.

There are a few instances with QF where you can also earn miles on a oneworld codeshare not operated by a oneworld carrier, most notably the QF codeshares operated by EK.
