SYD-RAR starts July

This seems to just come out tonight, great news for the Cook Islands
Posted at 06:17 on 17 December, 2009 UTC

Air New Zealand is to begin direct flights between Sydney, Australia and Rarotonga in the Cook Islands next year.

The Cook Islands Tourism Minister Robert Wigmore says Cabinet has approved a financial guarantee for Air New Zealand to operate flights during a trial period of July to October next year.

A statement by the Ministry of Tourism says the plans have been on the Cook Islands Tourism agenda for quite some time and the ministry hopes this will generate visitor growth from the Australian market.

It says the authorities hope the flight becomes commercially viable and will open up the possibility of agricultural goods including fresh fish to be freighted to Australia every week.

Anyone know what aircarft they are going to use, I'm thinking maybe a A320 (If it can make it).

I gave noticed there also is a one off SYD-APW on the 21/12/09

Flight: NZ107
Aircraft: 763
Depart: 9.30pm
Arrive:4.55am
Flight time:5h25m

Good use of an aircarft that usually would overnight in SYD. Could be what happens for the SYD-RAR service

Great news - getting to SYD from USA is relatively easy...and going through AKL was never horrible, but this makes it so much easier!

Now, only if they start SYD-NAN

Great news, I've been trying to convince Mrs Buzz to come on a holiday in the Cook islands, but the schedule MEL-RAR wasn't the best. A direct SYD-RAR will be great. Hopefully the flight schedule will be good.

The only NZ a/c is the A320 which does AKL SYD as NZ107 the o/n and returns as NZ100 SYD AKL departing at 7am.

Auckland to Sydney-Kingsford Smith Airport - Mon 21 Dec 2009
Departs Arrives Flight Info Duration Aircraft
7:00am 8:30am NZ0101 - 3h30m 763
9:00am 10:30am NZ0103 - 3h30m 320
1:00pm 2:30pm NZ0119 - 3h30m 320
4:00pm 5:30pm NZ0105 - 3h30m 763
6:05pm 7:35pm NZ0107 - 3h30m 763
On the 22/12/09 NZ100 is not running due to the aircraft being in APW. At this time of the year the 7am flight ex SYD is probably is not in that high demand.

From time to time NZ107 does get switched to an 763 due to demand.

So NZ107 is just leavening Auckland 35minutes later than it Normally does.

Fantastic news - the SQ redemption rate of 35,000 points for a return J ticket SYD-RAR is great, so if this is an eventuality I will be there with bells on.

OT but last time I went there I stayed at a great resort called Rumours - does anyone else know of any other high end resorts in RAR?

Air New Zealand will from July operate direct services between Sydney and the Cook Islands, making it the only airline to operate direct services between the two nations.

Flights will operate once a week for a four month trial period during the peak holiday season of July to October.

The seventeen return services on a Sunday from Sydney and Friday from Rarotonga will be operated by a 223 seat Boeing 767-300 with a configuration of 199 economy and 24 business class seats.

Flight time for the 5,000km journey is six hours from Sydney and seven hours 15 minutes from Rarotonga.

"We already carry a large number of passengers between Australia and the Cook Islands via Auckland," says Air New Zealand General Manager Tasman Pacific Airline Glen Sowry.

"The Cook Islands, including Aitutaki, is a very attractive destination to Australian travellers looking for a unique South Pacific experience."

"The introduction of direct services will provide a valuable boost to the Cook Islands community and with the support of the Cooks Islands Government and Cook Islands Tourism we will be working hard to make this trial a success."

Lead-in one-way economy fares from Sydney start at AU$487 and from Rarotonga from NZ$588.

The schedule is as follows:

Sunday 04 July - Sunday 26 September: Sydney - Rarotonga: - 1900/0500
Friday 09 July - Friday 01 October: Rarotonga - Sydney: - 1735/2050 +1 day
Due NSW daylight savings commencing 3 October, the schedule will alter as follows:
Sunday 03 October - Sunday 24 October: Sydney - Rarotonga: - 2000/0500
Friday 08 October - Friday 29 October: Rarotonga - Sydney: - 1635/2050 +1 day

Ends

You can already do SYD-RAR now with NZ J for 35000 SQ KF points, but requires connection at AKL. In fact, this applies for all south pacific islands. Regardless of connection required, it is still great value.

If the SYD-RAR goes well in 2010, hopefully they will give some more routes ago in 2011.
