How to tell whether the flight is overbooked?
Looked at AC 757 YYZ-SFO for this Sat on PTO, it shows that all Y seats are taken. Checked out ITN and it shows about 6 Y seats (all middle seats
) and 15 J seats left unassigned. ITN shows 9s in all classes.
Is this a sign of a full Y or overbooked flight? I might take this flight to have take a shot at a op upgrade!

Looks to me like it could be overbooked. ITN shows seat 15F is available - a premium window.
There's a direct and simple approach for finding out if a flight is overbooked. Simply call the SE desk and ask. Tell them you're hoping to maximize your chances of an operational upgrade and you're wondering if it's worthwhile getting to the airport early.

I just booked myself on that flight, agent told me that the flight is very close to full but not yet overbooked. It'll be nice if the flight is full that day and i might get that op upgrade since i won't be getting the empty seat next to me anyways..

Please keep in mind that on every aircraft (4 on an A320) there are seats that are blocked until the last moment for crew rest and safety. These are released only when the last 4 people are onloaded to fill the flight. Basically what I am saying is that there may be more seats open than ITN shows.
Goodluck though!

And just noticed that the 2 exit row on the A320 is shown as "occupied" on every A320 flight yet the SE desk (Not sure whether it was actually the SE desk doing my res today as the agent asked me whether I am a member of Aeroplan...
} was able to assign me one of those seats today. So that's another 12 seats that could be unassigned.
So maybe I am getting ahead of myself? Anyways... I'll be prepared for Y, I didn't buy the right fare, so shouldn't expect a J seat, the agent did offer to get me an upgrade if I get the next highest fare, it was $2500 vs. $500 which is what I paid for!

All of those exit seats, save one, will be available once the flight is open for check-in. It is very important for airport agents to verify that the persons assigned to those seats are capable of performing the necessary tasks in case of emergency. The last seat (13D) on an AC configured A320 is reserved until very last so that a flight attendant can sit there for takeoff and landing.

There are more seats that are unavailable for advance seat selection. These are the ever popular last row in economy. They are reserved for airport distribution as an out if a family or group has been split.
There is only a percentage of the total economy seating that is available for advance selection and it might be as low as 80%. My memory fails me for the exact figure.
