Reno Recommendations????

I've only stayed in Reno at the Silver Legacy. Am planning a trip back up there in a couple weeks and am looking at other hotels. Any tips, good or bad is appreciated. This time I'm taking my elderly mother who has never been so I though the SL would be good this time too, that way she has plenty to see and do with the hotels there being connected, she wont have to get out on the strip if she doesnt want too, as walking for long distances is one of her problems at this time.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone stayed at that Siena hotel? It looks nice, though they charge more than the Venetian in Vegas....lol...I just wondered if it is worth it.

Many thanx.

I've been staying at the El Dorado for the last several years, and I'm pretty satisfied. They have done a lot of room remodeling, especially in the "deluxe" rooms. I've also stayed at SL, and I would take El Dorado over it anytime.

Circus-Circus is usually a lot cheaper (still connected to SL and El Dorado), but can get very noisy with budget families.

You can't go wrong with the ElDo or the SL.

As a previous Reno resident I just go back to ski and want cheap, but reasonable accomodation. Thus, I ofter stay at the Sands Regency.

In your case I'd stay at the ElDo first and SL second. Even I won't stay at CircusCircus!

I have stayed at both the Silver Legacy and Peppermill. Both worked well for me. There is a long documented review of the Reno Hilton in the Hilton forum.

As for my preference for visits up north... I visit http://aa.rewardsnetwork.com or www.skymiles.rewardsnetwork.com and book my Reno Hotels based on room rate and FF miles potentially earned

BTW, the UNLV vs UNR Footbal Game is this weekend - UNLV is going to kick some Wolfpack bootie!

The old Reno Hilton is now Grand Sierra Resort.

Update on Good Hotels in Reno

Does anyone have an update of which hotel is best to stay in? I can't believe it costs $179.00 for the Hampton Inn.

So I'm looking for a place to stay for two days worth of work in the area. I don't care about Gambling but I sure don't want to pay $179.00 for a Hampton either. I'm looking at something under $100 and if I can get a great room for that, so much the better.

Thanks for your help.

All the downtown hotels are acceptable to me. I always book my reno trips on http://aa.rewardsnetwork.com or http://skymiles.rewardsnetwork.com so I can earn FF miles for the rooms. Cost premium is $10 at most and as an elite in Rewards Network, I earn 10 points per dollar spent.

When are you coming? If it's between August 3 and 12, you are overlapping with Hot August Nights, which would explain the high room rates, and you are probably out of luck getting anything decent for a reasonable rate.

Normally, things are fairly cheap. In fact, our convention and visitors authority has recently been trying to get hotels to raise their rates, on the theory that the current average rate is so far below that of most other cities that people who see the low rates think the hotels must be dumps.

Hey all--coming in for a night before heading to Squaw Valley. Got a suite comped at Harrah's, but have heard bad things--is Grand Sierra or any of the other hotels nicer/more recommended? I'm willing to pay if worth it.

Trying to find the nicest place with a casino (airport shuttle a bonus!) and some nicer in-house dining options.

TripAdvisor seems to pan everyone equally

Thanks in advance ^

Both of your choices have comp. airport shuttles, and many other casino hotels do too. What kind of "nice" are you looking for? I've no problems with the Harrah's suites and even the regular rooms - but then again I don't spend much time in there besides sleeping.

Haven't stayed at the Grand Sierra, only when it was still Reno Hilton. Its location is away from downtown and the other casinos. If you stay at Harrah's you can walk and visit the nearby casinos so that you're not stuck to one.

Harrah's steakhouse was good; the sushi bar was not. They have a quick and very good Chinese place by the Asian pit, a cafe, a good buffet, and an Italian cafe.

The nearby Siena looks pretty nice, if you'd rather pay instead of having more bankroll.

Free sounds good at Harrahs, mostly because their Steak House is a winner.

I stay in the basic rooms at the Grand Sierra for around $30-40 a couple times a year. They do have a more upscale room at a higher price, with more amenities (like flat panel TVs), as you'll see on their website. I generally get a better price on Hotwire than on the hotel's own web site. They do charge a $5 resort fee. There is nothing within walking distance of this property so you would be locked in there without a car.

You might consider the Peppermill. They've spent a fortune out there making additions. It's a couple miles out of downtown. I have friends that retired very close to it so we regularly end up there for dinner. They did New Years Eve there on an invitation-only event. I'd say it's the nicest property in Reno right now when you add up all that is there.

They have some issues there. See:

Thanks to all for the replies--guess we will stay at Harrah's, as it will be nice to walk to some other places and maybe do dinner at the steakhouse. PokerHammy, agree that free = bankroll $. ;-)

tom911, the Peppermill does look really nice--we may go over there and check it out as well.
