Grand Sierra Resort
For GSR, you can usually get the cheapest rate by walking into the hotel without a booking and haggling. It's definately worth getting one of the upgraded rooms as the old rooms are shocking (I wouldn't let my dog stay there). You do need a car but assuming you're not going to Reno to 'hang out on the strip' then it's better to stay out of the downtown area anyways.
The GSR pool is a bit tacky with their Nicky beach theming and is very shallow. Don't go near the 'day beds' out by the pool area - people are often caught having sex on them! Icky!
The restaurants in teh GSR are also pretty good but expensive.

You might consider the Peppermill. They've spent a fortune out there making additions. It's a couple miles out of downtown. I have friends that retired very close to it so we regularly end up there for dinner. They did New Years Eve there on an invitation-only event. I'd say it's the nicest property in Reno right now when you add up all that is there.

Perhaps the Siena is under new ownership?
It was indeed, and according to the linked website it still is. However, in my opinion one could get a lot more bang for their bucks at Eldorado, Grand Sierra, Peppermill, or Silver Legacy.

Just finished my stay at the Grand Sierra, and had to post a photo.
This is the pattern embroidered into the couch in my room. I am mildly ashamed to say that I was kind-of "into it".
On another note, I booked two of the absolute cheapest rooms ($29/night) Tues -Thurs, and did the "$20 bill between ID and CC" trick at check in. Got an upgrade to a much bigger room, but by no means a suite, and by no means updated. Still for what I payed to get two rooms it was worth it.
Also, the GSR seems to have the best non-smoking slots section in Reno. Machines are just okay, and it it hard to get a cocktail, but still the nicest I have seen in Reno.

You're really not far from Virginia City where there is still some flavor of the old west with saloons, gambling halls and old tombstones in the cemetery. I'll post one photo here and the the link for the rest.

Be sure to skip Charlie Palmer's - it's all hype and atmosphere with high prices and mediocre food. For Reno, we found the slots pretty tight as well.
