I'm heading to Aspen for the HBO Comedy Festival Feb. 28 - Mar. 4, 2007. Have already booked my plane ticket there using UA miles. I'll probably be going by myself, and would like to find a "reasonably" priced place to stay. Being that this is the heart of ski season, I understand "reasonable" is relative here. As long as I'm eating my cake, if it had a kitchen or kitchenette and was within walking distance of the center of town, that'd be ideal, but obviously I won't be able to have it all. Basically, I'm not into luxury hotels, but don't want to share a room. Something basic would be fine. Is there anything like that for under $200/night? Any recommendations? thx tls

Under $200 per night??? For a hotel room in Aspen, Colorado?!! I would be highly surprised if you could find that, especially if you don't want to share a room. If that price is a strict upper limit, you're likely going to have to stay in some other town along Highway 82. I just hope it wouldn't have to be as far away as Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

You might have luck finding some other attendees that are looking to share a hotel suite and the base cost per person being $200 a night. Aspen is so expensive even locals don't spend the night there. You should be able to find something in Frisco (on I-70) or in Leadville (access Aspen through back roads) at this price but Vail or Aspen is completely unreasonable. I am currently looking for places to stay in late Jan/early Feb and a good deal is $400 a night and no discounts for early & firm booking. I hate to be negative but this is case of leaping without looking.

You may have to consider the lodge by Buttermilk, or a studio condo at Snowmass. (try Laurelwood) Yes, you will have to take the bus (free) into Aspen, but they run frequently all day and night.

I would forget about driving from Frisco or Leadville to Aspen.

Yeah, Frisco, Colorado, is just too far away. I'd only consider that if I were skiing/snowboarding in Breckenridge, Colorado (and, I wouldn't even have to do that, as I know people in Breckenridge). And, the aforementioned back road from Aspen, Colorado to Leadville, Colorado, is closed in the winter. At least I'm pretty sure it is. Even if it's not, it's not a drive you'd want to do in inclement weather in the mountains if you're not accustomed to such driving.

Another Aspen/Denver question. Heading out there soon and return flight is out of DEN in the am (so can't drive from Aspen that early). Any suggestion on where to stay in the Denver area (is it worth it to stay downtown)? Seems like the airport hotels are not very nice.

I guess whether or not you should stay downtown depends upon how much time you'll have and what you'd like to do. Denver, Colorado, is a great town and there are lots of cool bars and restaurants downtown. So, if you're going to get there early enough on the night before your flight to take advantage of downtown, I'd suggest that. On the other hand, if you don't care much about that kind of thing, you may as well stay closer to the airport.

The one thing I can definitively say is that you don't want to stay any further west than downtown if you're flying home on a weekday. I-70 east of downtown (specifically, east of I-25) will be pretty clear and it shouldn't take you too long to get to the airport in the morning. Stay anywhere west of I-25 and dealing with traffic that morning will be a near certainty.

Ooh. Do you mean the Loews near Cherry Creek and I-25? That's not really downtown Denver, Colorado. But, you will have access to lots of malls! Sorry, I should have been more specific in my reply.

Not quite sure what the quickest way to the airport will be in the morning. But, especially if it'll be a weekday morning, you will not want to take I-25 north to I-70 east; that'll be ugly. Ask at the desk for the quickest way to get to I-225. Take that north 'til it meets I-70. Then take I-70 east to Pena Boulevard and follow Pena all the way to the airport.

Thanks for all the responses. I have a friend now who may go, so that'd drop the price. I intend to stay in Aspen, even if I have to pay $600/night, but I'd rather find something at the low end since I just don't care much about luxury. I will check out some of these suggestions. tls

There are some B & Bs and condos in town which will do you right - you might even get The Gant at your shared price range. Since you want a kitchen, go for the condo option.
