I was serious about that too. During the DOT's "Determination of Fitness" and while requesting the FAA to grant a "Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity" an airline is required to show how they are going to operate. VX knew they were going to make this objection so they should have disclosed it during this process. Why does VX think they shouldn't operate as every other carrier in this country is required?

Considering how hostile the other airlines were to VX's starting up operations (and how they .....ed and moaned to the FAA about Reid, VX's first CEO, and so on), I'm not surprised Virgin decided to give them the middle finger by being sneaky (albeit, legal- they had the right to try what they did, even if it didn't work out).

And it looks like they are going very hard for the appeal.

All you Virgin America cheerleaders it sounds like a major restructuring is in the works, rumor is that they may be abandoning trans-cons! And your CEO may be out.

Sources of said rumors? I have seen none of this in print, anywhere.

Mmmm the "insiders" say they have heard about six different rumours, and so are assuming one of them must be true. Who knows, in the industry these days anything can happen.

I vote FUD. I could be wrong, but the only source I've seen is that one website, which could be run by a legacy employee or fan for all we know. Nothing in Google News where I'd expect at least one hit if it were a widespread report.

Holly Hegeman is an industry analyst who publishes the "most widely-read weekly financial subscriber publication of the airline industry." She has been publishing for over a decade.

In my opinion (a self described industry analyst with access to powerful revenue and cost models) VX is way too dependent on transcon flying. They are not making any profits on transcon and need to lower their stage length to levels where their revenue model supports the cost. I don't think they will abandon transcon but I expect them to significantly reduce their exposure under the current fuel costs.

Thumbs down

I think they are afraid of their completion factor (rumored at around 30-40%) What good does 80% load factors do is you only fly 1/3 of your scheduled flights?

Rumored by whom? You? On time and completion factor data have been available for all to calculate since they started in August.

Also, I can assure you that if their completion rate were under 50% you'd have heard about it on this forum. I've taken tens of flights and they've all been completed and only one was 15 or more minutes delayed (due to IAD ground program).

Don't most airlines have completion rates in the high 90%...I'm pretty sure it would be all over this forum if their completion rate was any lower than 90, let alone 30-40.

Well, since VX is expanding their service, one presumes that they'd put in new service to places like, say, SEA and ORD... oh, wait, they're doing that already, aren't they?

So, logically, you'd see JFK-MIA instead of LAX/SFO-MIA, no?

Well, since we've heard rumors of things being done on premium seating, I don't doubt that SOMETHING is afoot.

And, um, yeah. I've flown my own fair chunk on VX ex-SEA. 60% of MY flights aren't being cancelled. I think we'd have heard about this already.
