Fare reduction after purchase - how to process?

This is the first time I've had a trip booked with a substantial fare reduction I'd like to benefit from. I have the CC so I get a fee rebate, but I'm trying to process this as follows:

When I go through the "change" formula on the website (I'm going from MCS instant upgrade to the same), it tells me I need to call. It also tells me I need to call if I choose another flight other than the same one. I'm out of the USA for a few more days so I'd prefer to do this online.

Thoughts on how to process?

Call them and make two changes. 1) The first change should be to some different flight (ideally the same route + class + fare), any flight works. 2) Change back to your original flight.

You must call in to cancel if you have the Virgin Premium Visa with cancellation fee waiver. I've always had to tell the agent I have the benefit as well. It seems like the system is not automatic yet.
