Passport Agency Appointments (same day expedited service)
Appointments for same-day expedited service often go quickly. It is best that you schedule your appointment with the passport agency exactly 14 days before your trip. You will want to call the passport number before the center opens at 8am EST as they will have just opened up one day (14 days out) of appointments at all agencies. Appointment times start at 8am. It is important that you have enough buffer in your travel schedule. For example, if you make an appointment for a new passport at 11am and your time of travel is at 2pm, there will not be enough time for you to get your passport. If you book the 8am slot you may have to wait until the end of the business day to get your new passport or it may only be a few hours.

You will want to have your date of travel, time of travel, your flight itinerary number, name of destination, full name of applicant, and applicant's birth city, and the zip code of where you live (to help them find the closest available center with open slots). Use the following steps to increase your chances of success to booking an appointment as they can go very quickly:
  1. 14 days before your trip, you need to schedule an appointment with the passport agency.
  2. At 7:55 am call the passport number 877-487-2778 (This have to be exactly 14 days before your plane ticket or less. If less, it will get harder to find an appointment)
  3. Click 1 (For English)
  4. Click 2 (New Passport)
  5. Continue to Click 7 to repeat, and keep doing this while watching your watch or using Time.gov to get the exact time down to the second.
  6. When your it hits exactly 8:00 am Click 2 (for traveling within 14 days option)
  7. There will be a delay of 3-4 second and you will wait for the next available agent. If you are very lucky, you will be put straight through to an agent. You may be waiting few minutes or maybe as long as 15-20 minutes.
  8. If you did not click 1 exactly at 8 am, you may have to wait for more than an hour and half
After the appointment slot has been reserved you will be provided with a unique identifier code and reservation number. These details will also be emailed to you.

Known office locator numbers (not complete)
Note: The office code (first two digits of your application locator number returned by Passport Status) is the office reviewing your documents and approving your application. It isn't necessarily the address you mailed the forms to (always Irving or Philadelphia for renewals) nor the facility where the book is physically printed and mailed (often Tucson or Hot Springs).

A list of agencies and their locator numbers is listed on this page under the heading, "List of passport agencies and centers with locator numbers."

H/T Nayef, txviking, and various individual posts both here and on Reddit. If you have a locator not in the above list, check the return address agency name or postmark/ZIP on your returned citizenship docs, or passport card if you applied for one, which may be the processing office, although the address itself is likely to be a PO Box in Sterling, VA in all cases (which appears to be a lockbox location that processes mail for all locations). The passport books are printed in fewer locations, often Hot Springs and Tucson, and may not correspond to the agency where the processing steps occurred. If it doesnt match the list above, please add or correct.

The only thing saving me from having to renew every year or two are the move away by certain countries from stamping passports (UK, HK, the US itself for US citizens) Certain countries doing away with full page visas, and doing so in an E format, certain countries moving toward longer term visas (So 1 ten year China visa rather than 10+ over a ten year period, 10 year India visas etc), and second passports moving to 4 from 2 year durations. That being said even with bigger passports, I am still spending far more per decade than I was before.
I thought about the thicker book 5yrs ago but I thought I'd be ok and didnt want to have to carry around a thicker book. I only blew threw the pages because in the past 5yrs, my opportunities to visit asia have been few and far between so I visited Europe alot. The agents don't take any effort to try to fit more stamps on the existing pages first. Schengen keeps saying they are getting rid of stamps but it keeps getting delayed. Ofcourse now, it's become far more difficult to find upgrades going to europe so I've been visiting asia more.

I find that judicious use of a paperclip to direct an immigration where to stamp helps greatly. I just clip over all the blank pages in the back except one. Some don't like that and remove the paperclip to have a look. But they almost always see what I'm trying to do and find a place to stamp without picking the middle of some randm page.

Good idea. I saw a random "Travel blog" that suggested placing postit notes over all the spots except where you want them to stamp. That sounds like someone who has never traveled.

However, regardless, I think I'll still get the thicker book. If the paperclip trick doesnt work, I dont want to have to renew so early again

With more and more countries going with e-gates for passport control and/or e-Visas if a visa is needed, it will be increasingly more difficult to get the pages stamped.

Many asian countries still stamp.
Just goto europe (schengen) and you'll get a stamp. Even after going through the e-gate, they still stamp it. Then when you leave again. I know with the new system you don't need one but that system's been delayed many times. Not quite as bad as real id. Sometimes on a single trip I may enter and exit schengen more than once and lose a whole page. If you take the train or bus across, I notice the guards take care to stamp and everyone has 8-10 stamps on a page. I guess the people that ride some of those cross frequently. But going through the airport, it's mostly 4. Once you're down to 1-2 pages, then they might start to care but its too late.

My point was that the number of instances where a stamp is required is decreasing.

For instance Singapore just went all e-Gate and no more stamps.

And while Japan still gets you the stamp inbound, outbound has EU will go stamp-less in the future.

UK also is stampless.

Taking my own travel patterns, if I almost filled up the extra pages passport before with my old passport, with the new passport, many of the stamps will not be there anymore, so will likely end up with left over blank pages.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get a second US passport without sending in one's current US passport (this would help me as I am filling up blank pages that are set for stamps)? Can one get an appointment for this? Or is there a way to do this by sending in one's passport card and other identification, or is the only way to do this being without a passport for a couple of weeks?

Thanks for sending the link. The thing that I was unclear about is whether if one chooses the option "Apply in person at an acceptance facility or passport agency using Form DS-11 if you cannot submit your passport book", a valid reason for this is that one does not have time to wait to get the passport back because of upcoming international travel, or if they only mean for reasons such as having a lost or damaged passport.

Also, there is no risk of having one's passport invalidated from doing this at a passport acceptance facility is there (the way that if one renews one's passport online one's passport becomes invalid)?

No, the primary is not invalidated as is done with renewals or replacement due to lost, stolen, or damaged.

Timeline for renewal, routine service:

11/15/2024: Application mailed via USPS 2-day service
11/18/2024: Package received in Irving, TX, P.O. box - status online "Not Available"
11/19/2024: Status online "In Progress" - locator prefix 43 (New Orleans)
11/20/2024: Check cashed
11/21/2024: Received email notification of "In Progress" status
12/05/2024: USPS notification (with tracking number) of package shipped from "PASSPORT SERVICES/DOS HOT SPRINGS"
12/07/2024: New passport delivered to mailbox. Sender address is New Orleans. Passport issue date is 12/04/2024.
12/08/2024: Online status still "In Progress" (no further emails received from DOS)

Considering the Thanksgiving holiday break, this is an impressive processing time. Expecting the passport card and old passport in the coming days. Will update those timelines then.

Good luck to all.

12/09/2024: New passport card received. Sender address is New Orleans, LA
12/09/2024: Online status still "In Progress" (no further emails received from DOS)

Final update:

12/12/2024: Online status changed to "Supporting documents mailed" (also received an email from DOS with same status)

I guess they don't use status "Approved" anymore. Ah well.

A bit longer trek than Duality due to my mistake but similar:

10/31/24 Submitted application online
11/4/24 Received email Acknowledging receipt
11/29/24 Received email (and later letter) saying they didn't like the photo I uploaded because I was wearing ear buds. So, I went to CVS for old fashioned passport photos
12/3/24 Mailed passport photos via regular US mail but sent from main post office in Boston so would get right in the stream
12/12/24 Received email acknowledging receipt of photos and saying application was in process "again"
12/16/24 Received email saying application was Approved and they did use that word
12/16/24 Received email saying passport with shipped with tracking number
12/18/24 Received passport
