Passport Agency Appointments (same day expedited service)
Appointments for same-day expedited service often go quickly. It is best that you schedule your appointment with the passport agency exactly 14 days before your trip. You will want to call the passport number before the center opens at 8am EST as they will have just opened up one day (14 days out) of appointments at all agencies. Appointment times start at 8am. It is important that you have enough buffer in your travel schedule. For example, if you make an appointment for a new passport at 11am and your time of travel is at 2pm, there will not be enough time for you to get your passport. If you book the 8am slot you may have to wait until the end of the business day to get your new passport or it may only be a few hours.

You will want to have your date of travel, time of travel, your flight itinerary number, name of destination, full name of applicant, and applicant's birth city, and the zip code of where you live (to help them find the closest available center with open slots). Use the following steps to increase your chances of success to booking an appointment as they can go very quickly:
  1. 14 days before your trip, you need to schedule an appointment with the passport agency.
  2. At 7:55 am call the passport number 877-487-2778 (This have to be exactly 14 days before your plane ticket or less. If less, it will get harder to find an appointment)
  3. Click 1 (For English)
  4. Click 2 (New Passport)
  5. Continue to Click 7 to repeat, and keep doing this while watching your watch or using Time.gov to get the exact time down to the second.
  6. When your it hits exactly 8:00 am Click 2 (for traveling within 14 days option)
  7. There will be a delay of 3-4 second and you will wait for the next available agent. If you are very lucky, you will be put straight through to an agent. You may be waiting few minutes or maybe as long as 15-20 minutes.
  8. If you did not click 1 exactly at 8 am, you may have to wait for more than an hour and half
After the appointment slot has been reserved you will be provided with a unique identifier code and reservation number. These details will also be emailed to you.

Known office locator numbers (not complete)
Note: The office code (first two digits of your application locator number returned by Passport Status) is the office reviewing your documents and approving your application. It isn't necessarily the address you mailed the forms to (always Irving or Philadelphia for renewals) nor the facility where the book is physically printed and mailed (often Tucson or Hot Springs).

A list of agencies and their locator numbers is listed on this page under the heading, "List of passport agencies and centers with locator numbers."

H/T Nayef, txviking, and various individual posts both here and on Reddit. If you have a locator not in the above list, check the return address agency name or postmark/ZIP on your returned citizenship docs, or passport card if you applied for one, which may be the processing office, although the address itself is likely to be a PO Box in Sterling, VA in all cases (which appears to be a lockbox location that processes mail for all locations). The passport books are printed in fewer locations, often Hot Springs and Tucson, and may not correspond to the agency where the processing steps occurred. If it doesnt match the list above, please add or correct.

It should change to Approved once the passport application gets approved. At this stage, they will print and mail you the passport. Then, I believe the status will also change to "Supporting Documents Mailed", though I haven't checked the status after my passport arrives in the mail.

My expedited passport renewal took five days from the date they received it (6DEC) until the date they notified me it was approved(11DEC). The passport and passport card were mailed on 11DEC in separate mailings and the old passport was mailed 12DEC.

Steps: In-Process -> Approved -> Shipped -> (Sometimes back to "Approved") -> Supporting Documents Mailed
Other possible status: Additional Information Needed

Daughter's renewal (first adult - so post office acceptance) took under two weeks, submitted just after new year. Would have been a day faster if not for MLK holiday.

Spouse adult renewal via standard service:
12/26/23 dropped application into regular mailbox mailed via USPS mail with applicable postage stamps
1/5/24 online status finally updated to show application was received and is in process. I was getting nervous that the envelope had gotten lost.
1/8/24 check cashed
1/16/24 status updated to approved
1/20/24 passport received via Priority Mail

Today when I check the status it shows supporting documentation mailed 1/19/24.

Overall from the time the application showed up in their system on 1/5 it took ~2 weeks until we received it including the MLK holiday in the midst of it which is great timing. I'm just not sure what happened from the time I put it in the mail 12/26 until they got it 1/5 which seems to have been an exceptionally long time and I will not make the same mistake again to mail without tracking.

You mentioned you live in California, yet you mailed it to Philadelphia. Did you request expedited service?

According to the State Depatment website, if you live in CA you should be sending it to Irving, TX. Philadelphia is for expedited requests only and/or you live somewhere other than California, Florida, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, or Texas.

Assuming he submitted at a typical passport acceptance location: my experience when submitting domestically at a post office - is that it is the agent processing the application who determines what office it is sent and not the applicant. I suspect it is the same in the poster's case....?

Yeah, I see what you mean. I assumed it was using a DS-11 but seeing the OP's handle better to assume it was a renewal. I expect they will not reject it simply because of the state residence - that would be a major inconvenience for all involved.

overseas passport renewal

I live overseas. So passport times may be longer than what others stated in this thread.

Sent documents to my embassy on 1/5
Received notification that passport was being printed 1/23
Received notification that my passport was being sent to my embassy on - 1/25
Received new passport today!!! 2/5

A month if you are overseas.

Or drop off and pick up from your local mission and potentially get it back in half that time (as always).

Father renewing US passport, expedited service to Philadelphia passport center address
Mailed from NY to Philly Sat Jan 27th
Expected Delivery Tuesday Jan 30th
Missing Mail Request filed Friday Feb 2nd
Package Scanned in Philadelphia Distribution Center Sunday Feb 11th
Actual Delivery to Passport Agency: Monday Feb 12th
Application "In Process" : Wednesday Feb 14th (2 days after delivery)
Check Cashed: Feb 14th
Application Approved/Shipped: Tuesday Feb 20th (6 days / 3 business days after application in process
Passport Delivered:Thursday Feb 22nd (2 days after shipping)
Passport Card Delivered: TBD
Existing Passport Book returned: TBD

Record locator 45 for Portsmouth NH. Passport book is shipping from Tucson.
Other than USPS mishaps, impressive speed by the Department of State - had the application been properly delivered on Jan 30th as it was supposed to be and other timelines held, that'd have been less than two weeks door to door.
